Astro also announced that it had acquired the broadcasting, radio and mobile rights to the 2006 FIFA World Cup championship. This spells good news for subscribers who will be able to catch all 64 matches of the World Cup live, which will be held in Germany from June 9 to July 9, 2006. Even better news for subscribers is that there will be no pay-per-view for the World Cup 2006 matches and no additional subscription charges to the three new sports channels. And as a build-up to the World Cup, Astro has already started screening the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and will be bringing more football action with the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup live from Germany from June 16 to 29. It looks like football fans will have a lot to look forward to, as Goal TV, the dedicated football channel, will be offering 24-hour coverage and over 200 hours of football programming a week. On top of it, Goal TV is separated into two channels, Goal TV 1 and 2, and will be bringing the top four English Premier League (EPL) club channels. They are, in no particular order, Manchester United TV, Chelsea TV, Liverpool TV and Arsenal TV.

MPs’ bid support is not unconditional
Independent Online – Jan 20, 2005
On Wednesday there were two men on the SA Rugby delegation who were closely involved in that victorious World Cup – Pienaar and Edward Griffiths. Griffiths, who was chief executive of the SA Rugby Football Union at the time, masterminded the “one team, one nation” campaign. He has also written the bid books for Cape Town’s 2004 Olympic bid and South Africa’s two soccer World Cup bids of 2006 and the successful 2010 one. He has been assigned to do the same for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The recent disharmony in South Africa is expected to have little, if any, influence on South Africa’s bid, even though the minister of sport, Makhenkesi Stofile, was involved in the row. Stofile’s brother, Mike, who is the third most senior official in the SA Rugby Union, accused the body of marginalising him and took out his wrath on deputy president Andre Markgraaff. Mike Stofile’s accusations prompted his brother to become involved.

People's Daily Online – Jan 20, 2005
Two years after its first World Cup appearance, China’s failure to qualify for the 2006 finals was a bitter pill to swallow, particularly after Hann had led the team to the runner-up of the 2004 Asian Cup. According to Yang, a combination of five local and two foreign coaches will carry on the hopes of raising the standard of Chinese football. “The head coach post is to be assumed by a local coach, while a foreign coach will serve as the technical director,” he said. Zhu Guanghu, who led Shenzhen Jianlibao to the title of the inaugural Chinese Super League last season, is tipped a hot favorite for the vacant post. Yang was reluctant to reveal how the selection of a head coach is going on, only saying “Zhu is a very capable coach, but he is one of the candidates.

Fuller: Ja’s failed World Cup bid big disappointment

The Reggae Boyz became the first English-speaking Caribbean team to reach a World Cup final when they achieved the feat in France,1998, and were hoping to mirror that performance for next year’s event. Now Fuller says he hopes the disappointment of not reaching Germany would not hinder the progress of the sport in Jamaica. “Since 1998, football in Jamaica has grown organisation wise, but it is a small country; there’s only 2. 5 million people on the island, so to achieve what we have so far is incredible. Hopefully we can keep it going and not let the disappointment stop us. Talk Back

U.TV – UTV – Jan 20, 2005
Since shaking off the injury problems which blighted his early career, Gerrard has fulfilled his potential to become arguably the most important cog in Sven-Goran Eriksson`s England wheel. And the roving midfielder believes world football`s nearly-men can go all the way next year… “Portugal were the hosts and they played well on the night, and unfortunately we lost out on a penalty shoot-out. “The lads were disappointed with how we played in that last eight game because we feel as if we could`ve done a lot better. “Despite his vast experience in the game Gerrard has never represented England in a World Cup, missing the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan through injury. He explained: “It hurt really bad, probably one of the lows of my career, being injured for that. “I was desperate to go. I`ve had a bit of a bad time with injuries as far as the international set-up is concerned and I`d like to put that right. “I was a bit hot and cold in Portugal too, so I`m looking to make amends in 2006.
