The game’s up | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited
Guardian Unlimited – Feb 4, 2005
Die Zeit, the leading liberal newspaper, yesterday urged German fans to keep faith with the game they loved. “They are the true heroes in these dark days,” the paper said philosophically. Franz Beckenbauer, the man responsible for Germany’s successful 2006 World Cup bid and who is leading next year’s arrangements, has described the match-fixing revelations as “disgraceful”. From his point of view the timing of the allegations could hardly have been worse. On Tuesday Fifa released the first batch of 812,000 tickets for the World Cup for sale via the internet. Half a million people from around the world have already tried to buy them. Few, however, are likely to be successful.

End of the road for Cup final Saturday
Guardian Unlimited – Feb 5, 2005
As the English end-of-season showpiece and one of the few club matches televised live in the whole year, the power of the game could be measured by the half-time electricity surge that it prompted as the nation brewed up to steady its nerves. Now the institution of the Saturday afternoon cup final appears doomed, with the revelation that the Football Association is considering moving next season’s match to a Wednesday night… getElementById( ‘frameId206042’ ). In 2006 the World Cup finals will begin in Germany on June 9, and Eriksson has asked for four weeks to prepare his squad and provide them with an adequate rest period. Leading figures in the FA are determined to give Eriksson every chance in what could be his last tournament as coach, and with the domestic fixture list filled to bursting point, and the Premier League unwilling and unable to begin its season a week early, shifting the Cup final is one of the options being considered. The Premier League season is due to end on May 13, and in normal circumstances the Cup final would be May 20, potentially depriving Eriksson of important squad members. But were the Cup final to be moved, it would be a further blow to a competition that has struggled to retain its relevance in the face of expansion by the Premier League. In 2001 the FA shifted the final to the penultimate weekend of the season, scheduling it a week before the Premiership’s final round of matches; and in 2000 Manchester United, the holders, were given permission not to enter so that they could play in an overseas club tournament.

The German soccer legend was speaking after the German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed that 25 people are accused of fixing matches in German league games including four referees. A total of 14 players are also suspected of taking financial bonuses while two Croatian brothers from Berlin have already been arrested. ?Naturally, and in common with all football fans, I am shocked at these scandalous incidents,? said Beckenbauer. ?Like most others I never believed it possible here… The German soccer legend was speaking after the German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed that 25 people are accused of fixing matches in German league games including four referees. The whole sorry episode must be completely resolved by the judiciary and the DFB as swiftly as possible.

They also recognised that they failed in the first 45 minutes of the games and they also realised that at this level maximum concentration is very important,” noted the veteran coach. “One mistake at this level can make the difference of you advancing or not,” added Downswell. With the senior Boyz out of the qualifying campaign of the Germany 2006 World Cup, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has been going through lean financial times, but Downswell felt the federation did its best for the Under-20s, all things considered. “Based on the resources that we have, I think the federation gave it their best shot. probably they (Under-20s) would have done better if there was more, but that is hard to say for certain at this point,” he said.

Yorke confirmed for T&T team
Jamaica Observer – Feb 5, 2005
Jack Warner, Special Adviser to the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), made the announcement of Yorke’s return on Thursday, stating that the local governing body and the team management welcomed the return of the former Manchester United striker. “On behalf of the Football Federation, we do wish to officially confirm that Dwight Yorke will be here to play on Wednesday against the United States,” Warner said. “There have been all kinds of rumours over the past three weeks over his future but he and I have been holding discussions over the last week and these discussions have now been very fruitful and have also been amicable all along. ”
He added: “Both of us, in the national interest, have agreed to put the past behind us and to look at the present situation and ahead to what lies in the future, because we both believe that this is the best chance this country will ever have for qualifying for a World Cup for a long time to come. ”
Warner said that officials at Birmingham City, the Premiership club Yorke joined from Blackburn Rovers at the start of the season, have been receptive to Yorke’s return to the international arena.

FA Cup in danger of losing lustre
BBC News – Feb 4, 2005
But the Football Association is considering the move from 2006 to ensure England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has more time with his squad before the World Cup in Germany. The FA insists no decision has been made – but the confirmation that it is “exploring several strong proposals” suggests it is a serious consideration.

Clubs face Uefa quota
Financial Times – Feb 4, 2005
The German soccer federation (DFB) said Robert Hoyzer, the 25-year-old referee at the heart of the case, had implicated three other referees. The DFB said Hoyzer officiated four rigged games: two regional matches, a second division game and the German Cup match between first division Hamburger SV and third division Paderborn. The scandal has shaken German football as it prepares to host the 2006 World Cup. Berlin prosecutors say four referees and 14 players were among 25 people suspected of fixing at least 10 games. Hoyzer has admitted taking money from a Croatian-controlled betting ring to rig at least four games. The DFB has also identified Kaiserslautern’s 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg last November as the one first division match under suspicion. The Bundesliga game, played on November 27, was refereed by Juergen Jansen, who has been implicated in the case by Hoyzer but denies any involvement.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) – Sao Caetano striker Fabricio Carvalho was dropped from the team’s roster with a heart problem yesterday, one day after the club’s president and doctor were charged with murder in the death of defender Serginho. Carvalho, who had not been playing because of a knee injury, was sidelined because he has cardiac arrhythmia, club doctors Mauricio Bezerra and Marcelo Saragiotto said in a statement. Serginho collapsed and died of heart failure on October 27 during a Brazilian league match against Sao Paulo.

Jeremy Bloom wins another moguls race
USA Today – Feb 6, 2005
Hiroki Nonogaki of Japan defeated Nathan Roberts of the United States in the race for third and fourth place. Bloom, the reigning world champion in freestyle moguls and a 2002 Olympian, had to give up college football last season because of his ski endorsements. He spent last fall training for the 2006 Turin Olympics instead of returning kicks for Colorado. Bloom has 540 points in the dual moguls World Cup standings, 158 points ahead of Roberts. Australia’s Dale Begg-Smith, who was fourth Sunday, is third in the standings with 341 points. In the women’s race, Kari Traa of Norway defeated Hannah Kearney of the United States to finish third. Bonfrere seemed to be still upset from the team?s 0-1 loss to Egypt on Friday night. The coach said that he will get the team in shape by having four hours of training a day from Sunday until the day before the match on Tuesday. The match against Kuwait is a very crucial one in order to qualify for the finals in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Taking advantage of playing at home and winning this match is essential. Kuwait, ranked 54th in the FIFA rankings, is definitely weaker than Korea based on recent statistics. In their most recent match, Korea, 21st in the FIFA ranking, beat Kuwait 4-0 in the Asian Cup Tournament in July of last year. However, in all-time play, Kuwait has the edge with eight wins, six losses, and three ties.

Gearing for World Cup
Jamaica Observer – Feb 5, 2005
Gearing for World Cup – JAMAICAOBSERVER. The field has been sub-contracted to Gregori International, the same firm that improved the National Stadium’s football field to international standard… Phase two of the project, which begins immediately after the West Indies versus Pakistan Test match in June, will last 11 months and should be completed by May 2006 in time for the “new Sabina Park” to host a Test match and two one-day Internationals against India. Phase two will give the ground a dramatically new look with a state-of-the-art mega stand to be built at the park’s northern end, contributing to an increase in permanent seating capacity to 16,700 from 14,000. The well over 100 year-old Sabina Park will host seven World Cup games including the tournament opener and a semi-final, with the West Indies set to play all their first round games there. When the Sabina project is completed in 18 months’ time, the 16,700 permanent seats will include 100 private, luxury boxes, up from the current 70. An additional 4,000 temporary seats will be installed for the World Cup to take the capacity to 20,700. Talk Back

WORLD CUP: Morocco Hosts Kenya
Vanguard – Feb 6, 2005
The game was shifted as a result of Kenya’s suspension from international football mid-last year. Morocco lost to hosts Tunisia in the final of the 24th African Nations Cup championship last year, and both teams are in the same group in this series. Both teams played out a 1-1 draw when they met in Casablanca last year. Wednesday will also see a rash of international friendlies across the globe, as it is a FIFA -free day.

‘Midget’ remark made Carlos Alberto look small
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 4, 2005
Given that the World Cup is to take place in Germany, The Great Escape is inappropriate enough, but I could not believe my ears when the drummer started beating out the rhythm for the dismally vacuous song about German bombers being shot down by ”the RAF from England”. Another day, another lapse of taste. But, if the FA do not act to prevent a repletion of this one, we have more to rue in the summer of 2006 than the misguided ravings of a World Cup legend.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Fifa begin stadium inspections
BBC News – Feb 5, 2005
The inspections start with visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon. According to Fifa spokesman Nicola Armago, the inspections have come as a result of reports by both Fifa and Caf officials. The reports covered a number of serious incidents that occurred during at several 2006 World Cup qualifiers last year. Armago told BBC Sport that Fifa had been saddened by a series of “issues and tragic incidents” that had occurred in those matches. “As a result a joint decision was taken to visit various member associations before the qualifying rounds restart on 26 March,” Armago told the BBC. “The main purpose of these inspections is to ensure the safety of fans and identify any improvements, not to provide funds for upgrading”. In March, the inspection team will move on to view stadiums in Mali and Senegal.
