Reggae Boyz face T&T in opener
Jamaica Observer – Feb 20, 2005
Simply put, qualification for the Gold Cup remains the last chance to resurrect the nation’s football programme. Senior defender Tyrone Marshall put it simply: “The thought is to come down here first and foremost to qualify for the Gold Cup, and then after that to look to win the Cup, so the first game is definitely going to be important,” he said. “I think the results are very important for Jamaica’s football because we are in an ‘in between’ where we don’t know what is going to happen. Qualifying for the Gold Cup is going to put us back on the map, so to speak. “But Marshall is not overly concerned about the team’s lack of quality preparation.

German scandal raises echoes of the past
Turkish Daily News – Turkish Daily News (subscription) – Feb 20, 2005
Hoyzer’s confession that he fixed seven games last year has made German football relive its worst nightmare. The inevitable comparison is with the 1970-71 match-fixing scandal that involved half the country’s 18-strong first division. That is what has caused such shock and embarrassment as the country prepares to host the 2006 World Cup. “Football fans who can remember back to 1971 still turn away in horror,” German network ARD said of a scandal that came to light via taped phone calls between players, coaches and officials. A Schalke team including such famous players as Klaus Fischer, Klaus Fichtel and Rolf Ruessmann was shown to have thrown a match against Arminia Bielefeld in April 1971 for 2,300 Deutschmarks a head. That proved to be just the tip of the iceberg. Years of detective work from Hans Kindermann at the German Football Association (DFB) uncovered corruption on an unthinkable scale, and he eventually gave fines and bans to 53 players, two coaches and six officials.

BBC News – Feb 19, 2005
Kelly, a national council member of the Football Supporters’ Federation, has added his voice to the campaign to keep the Cup final on Saturdays. He said: “The FA is totally incapable of looking after its own competition, which is dying of neglect. ”

The FSF has launched an on-line petition against plans to move the final to midweek. ?We?ve been a disgrace since July,? said Beckenbauer, president of the 2006 World Cup organising committee and German football?s most respected figure. ?We?ve been sitting in the shit for six months. ? Beckenbauer?s frank assessment of German attempts to resolve the administrative mess came just as the country was hit by another wave of largely self-inflicted problems. The match-fixing scandal raged on, as disgraced referee Robert Hoyzer was arrested on charges of suspected fraud and two more referees were suspended. The saga, which is now threatening to take in a UEFA Cup match in Greece, managed to eclipse the groundbreaking Frankfurt workshop attended by 46 candidate referees for the World Cup.

Walchhofer finishes first in downhill
Taipei Times – Feb 20, 2005
Traa won the event. PHOTO: EPA Michael Walchhofer will be a tough man to beat for the World Cup downhill title. Walchhofer’s second consecutive downhill victory put even more space between him and newly crowned world champion Bode Miller, Johann Grugger and Daron Rahlves. “I am going to fight Bode Miller for the downhill title,” Walchhofer said. “I remember seeing Stephan Eberharter ski for three years in a league almost of his own and winning the title three years in a row. “I would be very proud if could win the downhill globe and take over from Eberharter because it would mean I am in the same league… The Four Continents competition was the second major championship to adopt the new scoring system instituted after the pairs skating scandal in Salt Lake City
Instead of the old 6. 0 system, marking is now based on a cumulative total of points gained by jumps, spins and stepwork, and artistic skills. It will also be in place at the world championships at Moscow in March and the 2006 Winter Olympics. This story has been viewed 2328 times.

Chelsea popularity rises with Mourinho
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Feb 21, 2005
Used on article pages to rotate the images of a story. The European Football Monitor, published by SPORT+MARKT, the Germany-based communications research company, found a significant growth in the popularity of the club since the arrival of José Mourinho, the Portuguese manager, from FC Porto. The surge coincides with a new buzz around the West London club caused by the takeover by Roman Abramovich in 2003. Chelsea are favourites to win the Barclays Premiership title this season and are still in the European Cup and Carling Cup. However, Chelsea’s support still lags behind that of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United, according to the survey of 15 to 69-year-olds with an interest in televised football. Chelsea are the ninth most-popular club in Europe… Dortmund were able to reach a “standstill” agreement with creditors on Friday, which involves a debt moratorium until the 2006-07 season and short-term loans to cover players’ wages. However, there are concerns that the club will struggle to raise money needed to buy back and upgrade their stadium over the next 18 months. The Westfalen stadium, which, with a capacity of 80,000, is Germany’s biggest, is one of the 12 venues for the 2006 World Cup. It is scheduled to play host to six matches. Handelsblatt, the business newspaper, reported that Dortmund need €10 million to survive the season. The German football league could revoke the club’s licence if they cannot prove that they are solvent. WHILE DAVID O’LEARY talks of further developing the Aston Villa youth system because of a lack of transfer funds, his employers made their first appearance in Deloitte’s football money league for five years.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Kenya sanctions Opiyo
BBC News – Feb 21, 2005
Opiyo, who plays for South African club Bush Bucks, is said to have pleaded guilty to using cannabis, following a test on 19 January after a match against Silver Stars. Sylvester Ashioya, secretary-general of the Kenya Football Federation, said Opiyo’s act has left them with no other choice but to drop him from the Harambee Stars for the time being. “We can’t allow our youth to be involved in the consumption of banned substances and have decided to remove him from the national team until he’s cleared of any wrong-doing. “We’re waiting for a report from the South African federation and we’ll then decide what kind of sanctions to impose on him,” Ashioya said. Before moving to South Africa, Opiyo played for local side Mathare United. Meanwhile, the futures of Harambee Stars head coach Twahir Muhiddin and assistants John Bobby Ogolla and Rishadi Shedu, are uncertain… Before moving to South Africa, Opiyo played for local side Mathare United. Meanwhile, the futures of Harambee Stars head coach Twahir Muhiddin and assistants John Bobby Ogolla and Rishadi Shedu, are uncertain. KFF chairman Alfred Sambu is said to be looking for a new national coach, after Kenya’s 5-1 thumping by Morocco in their last 2006 World Cup qualifier. Sambu has invited some former internationals to a meeting on Wednesday, which is likely to discuss possible alternatives to Muhiddin.

Zambia drop Milanzi
BBC News – Feb 19, 2005
Milanzi was a key member of the Chipolopolo last year but he will no longer play in the combined 2006 World Cup and Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. The striker, who plays for South African side Golden Arrows, recently received a six month ban that was suspended after traces of cannabis were found in a urine test. His compatriot Francis Kombe, who also plays in South Africa for Silver Stars, failed a random drugs test recently too, again testing positive for marijuana. The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) feels the trend is worrying. “Any player must feel the consequences and we are not going to be apologetic on this one,” Faz president Teddy Mulonga Mulonga said… The striker, who plays for South African side Golden Arrows, recently received a six month ban that was suspended after traces of cannabis were found in a urine test. Mulonga stressed the decision to drop the players would act as a deterrent to their team-mates.

Karbassiyoon progressing nicely
go.com – Feb 21, 2005
Sometimes, I just sit around looking, thinking, ‘This is awesome. ‘ These guys are hopefully heading to the Premiership next year, and it’s a good enough reason to be excited, you know, so it’s really cool. “Karbassiyoon’s next big goal is to represent the United States in a full international and hopefully play in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Although he has played a few times with the U. U-18’s and U-20’s, he is now too old for the U-20’s, and he will be too old for the U-23’s by the next Olympics. Danny Beamer believes a call-up from Bruce Arena has to be coming soon.

ESPNsoccernet – UEFA Champions League – Remembering glories past
go.com – Feb 20, 2005
20, 2005Remembering glories past Kevin Palmer AC Milan super striker Andriy Shevchenko may have been cruelly ruled out of a return to the scene of his greatest triumph on Wednesday night, but the memories of his last visit to Old Trafford are still vivid in his mind. The date was Wednesday, May 28, 2003; Milan were involved in a dour Champions League Final with Juventus that ended in a predictable stalemate and a penalty shoot-out that decided the destiny of Europe’s most cherished trophy. For those who relish the pure elements of exciting football, it was hardly a night to remember, but Shevchenko views the occasion in a very different light as it was his penalty in the shoot-out that sealed victory for Italy’s Rossoneri. ‘The Champions League Final meant so much to my career a couple of years ago,’ begins the recently crowned European Footballer of the Year. ‘It raised my profile to a level I never dreamt possible. Until that moment, everyone saw me as a good striker, but one kick and you can become a great. ‘ Shevchenko was hoping for an emotional return but he had to come off the pitch early into Milan’s Serie A victory over Cagliari and was taken to hospital, where he will spent the night before undergoing surgery on Monday… He has a reputation at Milan like no other striker and I can only hope to get close to him at some point in the next few years. He is a great man to try and emulate. ‘ Shevchenko admits the greatest goal left in his career is to lead his nation to the 2006 World Cup finals, but a repeat success in the Champions League is high on his wish list as well. With that in mind, he suggests the draw for the last 16 of this season’s premier European competition has not been kind. ‘You like to see all the best teams playing each other in the final games, but it will not happen this season,’ he continues. ‘When you look at some of the biggest names in European football all playing each other in February, it is not good for the competition. ‘I’m sure the winner of this tie between Milan and Manchester will believe they can go on to win the competition.

They were still paid full money for their rain-abbreviated week – $278,400 for Clarke and Davis, $182,400 for Montgomerie – and it also counts towards the US money list. But they will get only 75% of the world ranking points on offer, of prime importance to Montgomerie in his quest to qualify for the first two majors of the season. The Scot is currently in 62nd and needs to be in the top 50 by the end of March to qualify for the Masters. His next event is next week’s Dubai Desert Classic, whereas Clarke will look for a repeat of his 2000 Match Play victory. Davis moves on to the Chrysler Classic in Tucson starting on Thursday.
