Wounds run deep for whistle-blower Meier
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Feb 21, 2005
Nothing, certainly, to warrant 16,000 poisonous e-mails or 5,000 abusive telephone calls — within 24 hours of the event — in a campaign of appalling and unprecedented viciousness. Not so controversial, surely, that it would merit the protection of armed police outside his appliances firm. As we sat and talked in a Zurich café, it became clear who suffered most when England lost to Portugal in the quarter-finals of Euro 2004. It was not Wayne Rooney, despite his broken foot. The damage to the reputations of David Beckham and Sven-Göran Eriksson was fleeting compared with the trauma suffered by Meier. It is an extraordinary story, buried until now, that heaps shame on the conduct of English newspapers and supporters. It is the referee’s lot to upset people, especially in a long career that included 106 international matches, but Meier is certain that his suffering represents a new low.

TSN : SOCCER – Canada’s Sports Leader

“At the Euro, the players did what they wanted. They decided the way of life inside the group,” Santini told Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. Santini’s reign as France coach ended after a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Greece. He felt he was in a no-win situation… ”

Santini aimed a thinly veiled broadside at striker David Trezeguet, who is reported to have spat in Santini’s direction after being substituted against Greece. “If he did it, was he summoned? No,” Santini said. “Is it not worse to spit on your coach, and thereby on the national jersey, than to wear a Puma tee-shirt like (Robert) Pires did. Certain players think they can do anything. ”

In January, Pires was fined by the French soccer federation for wearing Puma gear instead of the national team sponsor’s clothing in a television interview. Santini says he knew his time was up as France coach even before he signed a contract to join English club Spurs shortly before Euro 2004. Key members of the French soccer federation insisted he recall striker Nicolas Anelka, even though Santini did not want him.

Beer brands yet to tap the thirst of the world
Edinburgh Evening News – Feb 23, 2005
Amsterdam-based Heineken, the world’s third-biggest brewing company, which counts Amstel, Tiger and Murphy’s stout among its 90 brands and operates in 170 countries, stated its intent after revealing its 2004 profits dropped 33 per cent to £371m, and predicting a further decline this year. Therefore, chief executive Thony Ruys says the marketing spending aimed to “turn up the heat” and boost the company’s position in the premium beer market. This includes new commercials with actor Brad Pitt, new packaging and other initiatives. And all that cash that went into the world’s second-biggest football tournament last year could not prevent rival Carlsberg – whose first beer export was a single barrel to Edinburgh in 1868 – booking a three per cent dip in its annual profit to £312m… Therefore, chief executive Thony Ruys says the marketing spending aimed to “turn up the heat” and boost the company’s position in the premium beer market. But the Danish group’s sales of its Carlsberg brand grew by about six per cent, helped in particular through improved sales in Poland and Russia. Total volumes at Carlsberg rose by more than ten million hectolitres to 92 million hectolitres – an improvement equivalent to 74 million bottles of beer a day last year. That led Nils Andersen, the president and chief executive of Carlsberg, to say: “The Carlsberg brand achieved an unprecedented high level of exposure from the [Euro 2004] tournament. ” Such high-profile exposure is seen as key to taking what were originally local beers into global markets.

Eriksson comes face to face with England women’s great Hope
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 22, 2005
“SE: “Hope’s put it perfectly. I’m exactly the same. No shouting – well, not very much. It’s very important to create a good atmosphere in the team environment. You need to be yourself, be your own person and stay true to your character… You saw what happened with Korea in the World Cup. It shouldn’t have happened, but they were fitter than the other teams. The same happened with Greece at Euro 2004. “HP: “I agree with Sven, fitness is very important. Players have to be in peak condition and you need depth in the squad. “SE: “The relationship between the coach and players is also very important. The captain is special because he speaks for the players.

Artful Deco salutes Mourinho
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 21, 2005
The mood in the Catalan capital could hardly be better ahead of the visit of Chelsea. In what was a routine victory for Barcelona, Deco was the most influential player on view. Some of Ronaldinho’s touches almost defied belief, not least the way he looks one way and then releases a pin-point pass in the opposite direction, but it was Deco’s art that stood out in the Nou Camp. Barca’s Victor Valdes saved a 10th-minute penalty by Fernandez Luis Garcia and Gonzalo De Los Santos struck the crossbar with a header but Barcelona won at a canter to give coach Frank Rijkaard his 50th victory in 83 games. It has been a tough climb to European football’s peak for Deco who was rejected by Benfica when Graeme Souness was in charge at the Portuguese club… “At Porto, Fernando Santos [his first coach]showed me the way and convinced me I had to work for the team and improve defensively. Mourinho added the finishing touches – he is the best manager I’ve had. “After Euro 2004, when he helped Portugal reach the final, Deco said an agreement between Porto and Chelsea had been reached but Barcelona stepped in and he signed for them in a £10 million deal. He said: “I chose Barcelona because of their history and the sheer size of the club. ” Deco is respectful and confident and said: “Chelsea are a very good team, though I think it is unfair to call them a defensive side. It is true they have some fantastic defenders and a fine goalkeeper but they also have a strong midfield and some good strikers. “They also have a very good trainer but when the game starts, he won’t be out there.

He didn’t want to start Duff against Barca. I don’t think this is a valid thought at all. If you have Duff, why not start him? Wow, I was amazed to hear that too. Duff falling out of favor? He is so explosive, so creative and if he hadn’t played in the game it would be 2-0 Chelsea out of the CL… There are many portuguse strikers better than Pauleta. Look how Sá Pinto is playing! And we have a bad coach. When he arrived, he used an awful team for 18 months, including the Euro 2004 first match. Then, when he realized he would lose and be dismissed, he used someone else’s work (Mourinho) and took all the credit. He insisted in Pauleta (he played 5 matches, and scored 0 goals), while other strikers, like Postiga (1 game, 2 goals) weren’t given chances, even though they had a better goalscoring ratio. Indeed, if Pauleta wasn’t suspended vs Spain (the only thing he did right in the entire tournament was getting that suspension) Nuno Gomes wouldn’t have played and we would have lost. And now, that he is scoring vs teams like Latvia and Luxembourg, Scolari would keep thinking he is a great sriker (he is the captian!).

Rooney meets venom with skill and a smile
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 21, 2005
It brought another torrent of hate from those supporters who used to reserve their standing ovations for his immense talent. It was never going to be a cosy return for a lad who used to wear a T-shirt that said “once a blue, always a blue” and whose bedroom window in Croxteth was decorated with Everton memorabilia. The stream of bile began after his £27 million transfer and was not helped by the news that his agent, Paul Stretford, was trousering around £1. Was Rooney worth it? Potential has never been richer. From the moment he chipped Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman on his Everton debut back in October 2002 he has risen to every challenge. A debut hat-trick for United in the Champions League match against Fenerbache was the essence of ebullient inspiration… From the moment he chipped Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman on his Everton debut back in October 2002 he has risen to every challenge. A debut hat-trick for United in the Champions League match against Fenerbache was the essence of ebullient inspiration. When he scored for England against Macedonia as the youngest at the age of 17 he was announcing a talent that was to make him one of the genuine stars of Euro 2004 until a foot injury damaged him and England’s chances. Since then there have been other marvellous flourishes, some violence of the tongue and a trip or two to see an anger management expert. He handled the `Judas’ taunts which began when he stepped off the team bus to a greeting by around 300 Evertonians who, given the chance to move like Rooney, would have galloped down the road over broken glass to sign for Fergie. One youth wore an Everton replica shirt with Rooney’s old No 18 and above it the word `Traitor’. Original wit was in desperately short supply.

Champions League preview – Porto v Inter Milan

The Portuguese side have been boosted by a number of big players returning for the game, and coach Jose Couceiro will be keen to take home advantage, despite missing suspended captain Jorge Costa. Influential midfielder Maniche and South African forward Benni McCarthy are both included in the squad. Greek Euro 2004 winner Giorgios Seitaridis returns along with Pedro Emanuel. Brazilians Ibson and Diego will not feature for Porto, with the latter suspended after his sending off and Jorge Costa’s three bookings have led to his exclusion from the game. Inter boss Roberto Mancini has surprisingly left out Edgar Davids and Alvaro Recoba from his squad – despite limited attacking options. Star man Adriano’s form has suffered of late and he cannot seem to get back amongst the goals, whilst Christian Vieri is struggling with a back problem. Obafemi Martins is still recovering from a kidney infection, whilst Julio Cruz is not yet at full match fitness.

Lizarazu still making waves
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Feb 20, 2005
Mention of them prompts talk of Arsenal. To know the French side is to know something about the current Premiership champions, and to be confused. The dashing Henry of Arsenal was not the same player at Euro 2004; nor does Vieira, so influential in the last championship, have the same influence on his country ’s team. And Robert Pires is no longer selected by Les Bleus. Pourquoi? “They believe more in the environment they have around them at their club. You feel it, even when you’re playing a high-level game with all that pressure. You feel that power and you relax.

SOCCER: Mourinho confident on Carvalho
U.TV – Feb 19, 2005
Carvalho, 26, who won the Champions League with Mourinho last season at Porto and played in the Euro 2004 final with Portugal, will therefore partner William Gallas in central defence. “It will be a difficult game as Newcastle have a big attacking power with Alan Shearer, Patrick Kluivert and Shola Ameobi,” admitted the Chelsea boss. “They are at home, this is the biggest chance they have to win a trophy this season and their crowd always creates a lot of pressure. “It`s the type of game in which John Terry would be great for us but William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho are great defenders and they must be ready to cope with it. “Ricardo will be okay… Chelsea will then fly straight to Barcelona on Sunday evening and Mourinho warned that English sides are being hampered in Europe by fixture demands and TV schedules. He declared: “Other countries protect their teams in Europe but in England they don`t. I`m not English but I`d like English teams to win the Champions League – especially Chelsea!”.

We have the biggest boat, the best deals …

Though slightly quieter, Vincent also likes the trappings of wealth. He has a particular penchant for fast cars, speedboats and parties — and gambling. Last year he scooped £1m on a bet that Greece would win the Euro 2004 football tournament. It was built on Owners Provident, an obscure part of the business that dealt with residential property… There is a photograph of the Queen with one of Tchenguiz’s racehorses and a gold-framed Van Gogh painting — a copy, but you catch yourself wondering. Then a door opens and a small, neatly dressed man with thick, black-rimmed spectacles and a slightly geeky smile comes over to greet me. Personal assistant, the PR man? Surely not the big-shot himself? Apparently so. I feel almost misled as I am taken into another grand room and pull back a seat at the boardroom table. Tchenguiz has a thick Iranian accent and a slightly squeaky voice, but his stories — and the fact that it takes him just two-and-a-half minutes to invite me to Cannes on his yacht — reveal enough of the legendary antics to quash my initial reservations. He talks enthusiastically about the upcoming Cannes Property Festival, the most glamorous gathering in the international property industry — and swiftly becoming the most debauched. “My brother and I have the biggest boat there.
