BBC SPORT | Football | African | Five stadiums for 2006 Nations Cup
BBC News – Mar 2, 2005
The Cairo stadium is being extensively refurbished for the event. However, the other venue in the capital is still to be decided between the Arab Contractors stadium or the Military stadium. All the venues were proposed by Egypt in their unsuccessful bid to win the right to host the 2010 World Cup finals.

If ever someone could qualify as an honorary Irishman it is Ian Woosnam. The jovial Welshman is well known for his love of the craic and an evening’s carousing in the bar. But Woosnam’s appointment as Europe’s 2006 Ryder Cup captain at the K Club was not made to boost sales of the dark stuff. The rise of the diminutive but powerful farmer’s son from Shropshire to 1991 Masters champion proves there is more to “Woosie” than just a good line in tap-room banter. The former world number one’s happy-go-lucky nature belies a fiercely determined and focused competitor. And in his eight Ryder Cup appearances, plus a stint as Sam Torrance’s vice-captain for the victorious 2002 European side, he has shown himself to be the ultimate team man. Woosnam made his debut in 1983 and was at the forefront of Europe’s revival in the competition from 1985 until his final playing appearance in 1997.

“Let’s first complete the 2006 World Cup. And then, if I’m still in good health, I will still feel like continuing my work at FIFA because I was seriously hampered in my first term,” he told soccer magazine France Football in an interview to be published tomorrow. Blatter, 69, has repeatedly insisted he would only remain FIFA president for two four-year terms, but he made it clear he had changed his mind. “The first half of my first term (1998-2002) doesn’t count. If national associations tell me to go on, why shouldn’t I stand once again?” he said.

“This was partly because the concept of stadium naming rights was not really recognised in Europe. “In the last two years it has become an important way of financing new stadium. ”

He said some of the grounds being built for the 2006 World Cup in Germany were being partly financed through sponsorship. But he said football clubs in the lower leagues in the UK may have difficulty in attracting major sponsorship packages as they did not have the profile and reach of the larger teams.

The vastly experienced Ghanaian, who made history last year by leading Republic of Benin to its first appearance at the African Nations Cup in Tunisia, was once the chief coach of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, which he left in a rather controversial manner. In a chat with reporters at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba, Attuquayefio talks on the myriad of problems affecting the development of the game in Ghana and Africa generally, the CAF awards, which he said did not reflect the true opinion of Africans. He also spoke on Enyimba and the way forward for African football. When news men took him up on the recent CAF African Footballer of the Year Award won by Cameroun’s Samuel Eto’o Fils, Attuquayefio said that the selection of the Barcelona striker did not reflect the opinion of African football followers, adding that “Okocha is the best African player in the world, whether CAF likes it or not. He has, and always will be a class ahead of every other player in Africa because of his immense skill, which are extraordinary. So, if that is his opinion, why did Ghana vote for Eto’o instead of Okocha? “Ghanaians have loved Okocha ever since he played with Anthony Yeboah in Germany. So, why should we not vote for him? It was probably the foreign coach, who does not have much knowledge of African footballers that did not vote for Okocha… It has happened like that in so many instances. Yet, they have not learnt anything,” Attuquayefio said. He, however, believes that Ghana could qualify for the Germany 2006 World Cup going by the way everybody concerned in the pursuit have responded to the quest. “It appears we have a good chance because the players, right from the beginning, have been regular in honouring the national team’s call. And I hope that they will continue like that in all the qualifiers because they stand to gain a lot from Ghana being there,” he said. Looking at his stay in Benin Republic, where he was regarded as a messiah, having taking them to their first ever Nations Cup appears; Attuquayefio blames his exit from the West African country on Africans’ penchant to treat their coaches without respect. “They tried to treat me the way African countries treat local coaches.

At last… a major tournament win for the Boyz
Jamaica Observer – Mar 1, 2005
Although the team was not at its strongest in Barbados, it was obvious just from watching their three matches on television that this Reggae Boyz team played with strong determination and resolve. They were united in their mission of becoming Caribbean champions and they did. This win has somewhat eased the pressure on the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) who, in the last couple of months, has come under intense pressure both from the public and the media. President of the JFF, Crenston Boxhill, a man known not to publicly show his emotions, was elated and thanked the Boyz for this important tournament win. Coach of the team Wendell Downswell was also ecstatic with the win and praised the dedication of the players and other staff members for the precious victory. So the disappointment of not qualifying for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany has been somewhat erased, but there is no denying that for the Boyz to regain their stature of old they must put up a strong showing in the Gold Cup tournament. A good showing in the Gold Cup will go a long way in placing Jamaica back on the football map, thereby allowing friendly internationals against stronger teams and hopefully more full houses at the National Stadium and an easing of the financial pressures currently being experienced by the JFF… President of the JFF, Crenston Boxhill, a man known not to publicly show his emotions, was elated and thanked the Boyz for this important tournament win. The US $100,000 the team took home for winning the Digicel Cup is but a mere drop in the bucket for the JFF. Now more than ever, Boxhill and his team must capitalise on the Caribbean win and try to get top rated teams to visit and play against the Boyz. After all, the Boyz are Caribbean champions and we are proud of them.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | English | Mitchell appointed to Perth post
BBC News – Feb 28, 2005
Mitchell, who had been tipped as a possible Wasps coach, will officially start work on 14 March. “This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of something truly significant in Australian and world rugby,” he said. “My intention is to select and prepare a side that is competitive in Super 14 from the beginning. ”

Rugby WA chairman Geoff Stooke said: “Rugby WA is delighted to have secured a head coach with John Mitchell’s track record, pedigree and demonstrated commitment to all levels of rugby from grass roots to national teams… “And with his proven track record at international and provincial level we believe he will do an exceptional job for Australian and WA rugby. ”

Mitchell, who has signed a three-year deal, said he expected to announce Perth’s first major signing in the next fortnight. Mitchell was New Zealand’s coach during the 2003 World Cup in Australia, but was replaced by Graham Henry after the All Blacks were beaten by Australia in the semi-finals.

An opportunity wasted?

In September, you said one of your first jobs was to identify suitable venues in the USA. Did you succeed? We have a new $35million cricket stadium being built in Lauderhill, Florida. This stadium opens in 2006 and will be a tremendous resource for the USA. Quite remarkable really – it took us ten years to get our first purpose-built soccer stadium in the States. I am amazed and excited that cricket has this resource coming on line soon. Is there life for cricket outside the expat community in the USA? The real question to ask is will there be any cricket in the expat community in 20 years if cricket does not come to the States. Kids of first-generation immigrants will gravitate to the sports they can watch… If monies are used wisely in this area and the very best coaches and academies developed, the USA can be competitive with the full-member countries in seven to ten years, and challenging for trophies in 10 to 15 years. If you want an example, look at the US soccer team. In 1990 it was ranked 130th in the world, and yet in 2002 it reached the World Cup semi-finals.

ABC Sport – Cricket – Hodge in for NZ tour, Kiwis pick two newcomers
abc.net.au – Mar 2, 2005
Australia’s chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, said Hodge’s performances deserved to be recognised with national selection. “He was our spare batsman during the tour of India,” he said. “He’s come back to Australia, had a bit of a slow start to the Pura Cup season but has kicked on in the last couple of months and his form is irresistible. ”

Hohns said the most contentious selection issue did not eventuate. “With Darren Lehmann being ruled out of the tour, we were always going to have to adjudicate on that position had Darren been available anyway,” he said. “But with his unavailability, well I suppose that opened the door completely then for Bradley Hodge. ”

Hohns said he and his fellow selectors felt a squad of just 13 players was sufficient for the three-match series.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Six Nations | Ireland win eclipses refereein…
BBC News – Feb 28, 2005
It may have to go the whole way and have NFL-style video cameras all over the field, or slap the vociferous perpetrators over the knuckles. What the IRB does not want is a football scenario where the verbal slanging matches often overshadow the game itself. Sunday’s explosive Six Nations clash at Lansdowne Road was a good example as Ireland took another step towards their first Grand Slam since 1948. The game was as exciting as it comes, with a much-improved England side enraged at a few decisions that did not go their way. One can understand that frustration. There was no doubt that Ireland had the rub of the green in their 19-13 victory, but the reaction from the England camp may not have endeared them to the sport’s “blazers”.
