rte.ie – Mar 17, 2005
Swede Lennart Johannson is set to step down in 2006 and Beckenbauer, head of the 2006 World Cup organising committee, admits the role had become more appealing. He said: “First of all it needs to be confirmed that Johannson is stepping down. Then if I have the backing of the DFB and UEFA I am prepared to make serious thoughts about the job. ”
The DFB had not offered their thoughts on Beckenbauer going for the UEFA presidency but Theo Zwanziger, co-president of the DFB, claimed the former Bayern Munich star had their full support.

In a related development, referee Justice Yeboah would assist South African national, Damon Jerome in a World Cup match between Croatia and Iceland in Croatia on March 26. Referee Yeboah’s call up is likely to boost his chances of making the grade as one of the assistant referees to be selected by FIFA for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. FIFA is yet to announce the list of assistant referees to undergo training for the World Cup after it announced the referees early this year. The Ghanaians are scheduled to depart for their respective destinations by the middle of next week for the assignments.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | El Gohary rejects Bahrain
BBC News – Mar 17, 2005
The only African to win the Nations Cup both as a player and head coach, El Gohary took Jordan to the Asian Nations Cup finals for the first time in their history last year. Football officials in the gulf state were thrown off balance by the sudden resignation of Croatian coach Srecko Juricic, who walked away earlier this month to take over rivals Oman. Bahrain were hoping that El Gohary would take charge before their crucial games against North Korea in Pyongyang and Japan in Saitama. “I am delighted that Bahrain asked for my services and happy with the professional way they approached me and the Jordanian FA,” Gohary said. “However, I am totally committed to my work with Jordan at the moment and I cannot think of something else. ”

The 65-year-old has become a well-respected figure in the Middle East, as a result of his achievements with Jordan in Asian football.

OhmyNews International – Mar 17, 2005
The world’s number one game has much to do to capture the hearts and minds of the cricket and rugby-loving locals. The problem for administrators down under is that soccer may be the world game but that world seems to be a long way away. The Football Federation of Australia (FFA) can’t change the country’s geography but it is trying to change its regional status. The FFA has stated that it wants to leave its present governing body of Oceania and has applied to join the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The Asian organization is expected to decide within the next month whether to reject or accept the application which would then have to be ratified by FIFA, the organization which controls the game at a global level… 5 places that Asia currently enjoys are under threat, especially after the poor performance of the two Asian qualifiers in 2002 — Saudi Arabia and China — who lost all their games. A similarly dismal World Cup in 2006 will jeopardize the Asian allocation even more. Cynics have muttered that the support of Oceania and Australia in future FIFA meetings could help prevent such a reduction as well as help AFC President, Mohamed bin Hammam become FIFA president. There are precedents, of sorts, for the move. Israel left the AFC to join UEFA, Europe’s governing body in 1974, for obvious reasons. In 2002, Kazakhstan, a Central Asian nation, became UEFA’s 52nd member, reportedly for financial reasons.

BBC News – Mar 16, 2005
The 28-year-old, who recently won his 50th cap, was left out of a 20-man squad announced by coach Stuart Baxter on Wednesday. He has been replaced by young striker Katlego Mphela of French team Racing Strasbourg. The 20-year-old scored twice on his debut as South Africa beat the Seychelles in a Cosafa Cup tie last month. Baxter has recalled goalkeeper Hans Vonk of the Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam and Germany-based left back Bradley Carnell, who has recovered from injury.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Zambia call up Chalwe
BBC News – Mar 16, 2005
The team includes South Africa-based striker Linos Chalwe, whose career two years ago seemed to be lying in tatters after he was thrown into the guardroom by his formers military club, Green Buffaloes. Chalwe was punished for sneaking out of the country to attend trials for South African side Hellenic without obtaining Buffaloes’ permission. Since those 28 days in solitary confinement, Chalwe has prospered at South African club Manning Rangers. The striker replaces Golden Arrows’ Harry Milanzi, who has been handed a six-month ban by the South African Football Association after failing a doping test.

Egypt sanctions coaches
BBC News – Mar 15, 2005
Manuel Jose, Ahly’s Portuguese coach, was banned for one match and fined US $1800, while an $800 penalty was imposed on Ismaili’s Muhsin Ertugal for his much-publicized allegations against match officials. “I believe the decision was too harsh,” said the Turkish-born Ertugal. Jose was sent off during Al Ahly’s match against El Geish for protesting against the conduct of the match official. The man who guided Al Ahly to win the domestic title seven weeks before the end of the competition, threw his coat onto the pitch in protest against the referee’s decision… “It was a very good game,” said Egypt coach Hassan Shehata. “The Saudis are one of the best teams in Asia and I am happy that we were able to put them under pressure throughout the whole match. ”

Egypt used the friendly to prepare for the resumption of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers later on this month.

Sven: Managers must work with refs

“It’s not necessary to have the same ideas as the referees, I had that in
Portugal but after 90 minutes you can talk to the referee, and then it’s
finished. ”
Eriksson himself received criticism after his side’s lacklustre performance
last time out when they faced Holland. “You are always criticised, more or less, so as long as it is football then
it is fair,” he added. “I learned a lot from that game, we played Holland, who could win the World
Cup, so it was difficult and I think we did okay. ”
Eriksson added that striker Michael Owen will become increasingly concerned
if he still has only a bit part role at Real Madrid next season ahead of the
2006 World Cup finals. Owen is still struggling to secure a regular place with Real since last
summer’s move from Liverpool despite their ailing form in the Champions League

BBC SPORT | Other Sport | Winter Sports | Bell celebrates skiercross…
BBC News – Mar 17, 2005
I am now the proud owner of the skiercross crown after winning the title at the Orange British Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships which are being held in Laax in Switzerland. Although my Olympic and World Cup racing days are long over, I fancied my chances in the British Championships. So I got my racing skis waxed at the Head ski factory to make sure they were fit for a frenetic battle over a course of twists, turns and jumps. And the race was totally awesome. I did two qualifying runs and won my heat quite easily but knew I was up against talented kids half my age in the final. My race strategy was to hit the front and hopefully stay there but it did not quite work out that way… I decided to carry my speed out of the final turn and by the last jump we were neck and neck but I had the better race line and just sneaked ahead of him at the finishing line. It was a huge adrenalin rush and you never lose the exhilaration of winning – even if you are 39-years-old!Skiercross is fabulous and although it is a recognised World Cup event it is not yet an Olympic sport but I think it should be. Boardercross will be making its debut at the 2006 Winter Olympics so I don’t see why skiercross cannot be recognised in time for the 2010 Games. I may have competed in umpteen Olympics and World Championships but I have really enjoyed the Orange Brits because there is a great atmosphere at the events as well as a healthy competitive spirit among the contenders. They are fantastically well organised and are really raising the freestyle stakes although I would like to see more skiers taking part. It’s a shame skiercross was not around in my racing days as I would have probably given up downhill racing to have a crack at it as it gives you a huge buzz. Instead I’m quite content to bask in my title glory and will of course be back next year to defend my crown.

SOCCER: Pires abandons France hopes
U.TV – Mar 17, 2005
Pires was left out of the squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Switzerland and Israel later this month. However, the Arsenal star will not quit international football with the possibility remaining of a call-up by Domenech`s eventual successor… “No one can decide on that. I remain a candidate even if, to be honest, I am not deluding myself. “Should France qualify for the 2006 World Cup and travel to Germany with Domenech there is little chance Pires will be part of the trip. “Never mind,” he added. “There is nothing I can do about it considering that my performances have no value in the eyes of the national coach and that my case is already decided. “The Frenchman also believes his harsh comments in the press towards Domenech last Autumn triggered the situation. “I am probably paying for what I said,” he added.

Beckham to put academy centre stage
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 15, 2005
The World Is Not Enough has often seemed a fitting title for Beckham’s ambitions but yesterday he said he would settle for a trophy at Real Madrid and a long retirement running his new football academy next to the Dome. Silverware, rather than the silver screen, was dominating Beckham’s thoughts, particularly given… He turns 30 in May yet his place in the England side, and the captaincy, remain guaranteed until Sven-Goran Eriksson steps down as manager, probably after the 2006 World Cup finals. “I want to continue playing until I feel my legs are too old and I can’t do it any more at the top level,” said Beckham. “Then I will go into my Soccer School. I will miss the banter in the dressing room. I don’t think there are many things that can compete with walking out in front of 70,000 fans, scoring goals or winning games, and that is the buzz that is hard to keep up.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Stupples sets tough 2005 targets
BBC News – Mar 17, 2005
The British Open champion aims to improve on her sixth-spot in the world rankings and is targeting a place in Europe’s Solheim Cup team. “I want to do even better than last year,” said the 31-year-old. “It’s going to very hard, but it is possible. Starting out again this year feels like a fresh start,” she said. Next week, she will be chasing a second major title – the Kraft Nabisco Championship – to set alongside the crown she won at Sunningdale last August.
