UEFA cut back on friendlies
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 19, 2005
Regardless of who is in charge, England could have so many qualifying fixtures that there will be barely time to fit in any non-competitive matches. In a revamp of the qualification format for Euro 2008, the finals of which take place in Switzerland and Austria, UEFA are planning to scrap the old Euro 2004 system of 10 groups of five countries in favour of eight groups of either six or seven teams. That would mean four more games should England be drawn in a seven-team group, and possibly even more if they fail to finish in first place. Although the principle of larger groups has already been agreed, the European governing body have yet to decide whether the second-placed team should go through automatically to the 16-team finals or whether there should be a play-off with the third-placed team… Regardless of who is in charge, England could have so many qualifying fixtures that there will be barely time to fit in any non-competitive matches. The decision will come at next month’s UEFA congress in Tallinn, Estonia. The new system is unlikely to find favour with Premier League chairmen, however, who will see it as adding a further burden to an already crowded fixture list.

Mourinho is our enemy, Uefa says
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Mar 14, 2005
Mourinho’s comments have made it difficult for him and the newspapers and others have made it worse. “I don’t know who made these threats against him, but I know it is not a joke and it has to be taken seriously. Anders Frisk is only 42 and he would have had a really good chance of the big games at the next World Cup and Euro 2008. This is not the way he should finish and I hope that Fifa and Uefa speak to him to try to change his mind. ” Frisk, who is rated behind only Pierluigi Collina as Europe’s leading referee (and the Italian retires at the end of the season), has claimed that he feared for his family after receiving letters and e-mails. “I will never go on to the pitch again,” he said. “There have been things done to me that I could never even imagine happening to someone.

FIFA WORLD CUP: England enter the Dragons’ lair

On 12 October the two frontrunners meet in the final group game at Old Trafford, Manchester, and pessimistic England supporters fear a repeat of events 32 years ago. Busy spellSven-G?ran Eriksson’s team have a hectic period ahead with the trip to Cardiff launching a spell of four fixtures in six weeks. Although Wales are out of the running and are using their remaining matches as preparation for the start of UEFA EURO 2008? qualification in 12 months’ time, manager John Toshack has declared their intention to make life difficult for their British rivals, just as they did three decades previously. Welsh prideToshack scored for Wales in a 1-1 draw at Wembley in 1973 which, as much as Poland’s matching result, was responsible for England not qualifying. Many Welshmen would rejoice if they were able to stop England finishing in first place, although there is now an alternative qualifying route through the play-offs should Eriksson’s side end up second. Potential winnersBefore last month’s disastrous 4-1 friendly defeat in Denmark, England’s chances of success in Germany were already being talked up, but Toshack says they should not get ahead of themselves. “England are a candidate to win the World Cup but they haven’t qualified yet and Poland, who have won all four away games so far, will be hoping to take first place,” he said… We’ve got to box clever and be wary of the sucker punch. Video nastyThis week Eriksson put the England squad through a video replay of their calamity in Copenhagen. “It will not happen again,” said Eriksson. “It was a collective collapse. ” Wales defender Danny Gabbidon, though, will be hoping to prompt a similar slump in Cardiff. Hostile reception”Hopefully England will receive a hostile reception from our fans, which is something that may help us a lot,” the West Ham United FC player told uefa.

This shows that in the Houllier-Phil Thompson season of 2001-02, Liverpool outperformed the wage bill, scoring eight points more than might be expected. But in the past two seasons they scored exactly as many points as you would expect, given their budget. In other words, Houllier was not bad, simply average. It’s a good thing Houllier wasn’t that bad, because Liverpool haven’t improved this season. In fact they have ever so slightly declined. As the decline hasn’t been significant, let’s be generous and say the club are standing still. However, the team’s problem has changed and may be easier, therefore, to solve.

David Hartley, prosecuting, told the court: “During the match this defendant was seen to run on to the playing area and approach Blackburn Rovers player, Robbie Savage. He was seen to approach that player in an aggressive manner – arms raised and on the face of it looked like beckoning to that player to have a fight with him. ” “This is not the first time he’s come to the notice of the courts, he was subject to a banning order when he committed these offences yesterday. You have a record that shows a history of breaching these sort of orders. ” Anthony Riley, chairman of the bench, told the defendant: “You really should have been more aware of the fact that you are already on a banning order and the offences before today are more serious because of that. ” Dylan Bradshaw, mitigating, said: “He had two to three drinks in a local club before the game and he had managed to get a ticket and he took a chance. “Robbie Savage is a very high profile player and a player that does enjoy good natured banter with fans and for some reason when the defendant was on the pitch it does appear he made towards Mr Savage and there was something of a stand-off.

It is easy to find fault with the Champions League. The name, for a start, is a misnomer, but like much of football’s problems, that is a matter of marketing rather than substance. The European Cup began its life as an invitation-only knees-up for clubs that L’Équipe, the French sports paper, deemed to have the most popular appeal, so its broadening does not buck against tradition. It cannot be right that AC Milan played 19 games — half a league season — to win the cup in 2003, but it cannot be wrong to have more entrants from the stronger leagues. And the Champions League has produced some marvellous occasions and tumultuous rivalries.
