FIFA World Cup: Greece wait for lasting legacy

news – FIFA World Cup: Greece wait for lasting legacy. Otto Rehhagel’s team arrive unsuspected in Portugal, loot the treasure and flee before, stunned, anyone can react. Otto Rehhagel’s team arrive unsuspected in Portugal, loot the treasure and flee before, stunned, anyone can react… Champions Olympiacos CFP will kick off their title defence in front of an empty Georgios Karaiskakis stadium as part of a three-match punishment for crowd trouble. Distant prospect”I hope that some day in Greece, rival fans will become civilised enough to watch a match together without causing trouble and without the need to have the police outnumbering the fans,” Dellas said. “But this will not happen overnight, not even with a European trophy on display” New stadiaThe Georgios Karaiskakis stadium is one of two renovated in Athens for the 2004 Olympics, which have arguably had a greater impact on the game in Greece than winning EURO 2004?. AEK Athens FC play at the Olympic stadium and there is evidence that crowds are beginning to return if the conditions are right. Victory in Lisbon awakened an appetite for football, but crowd violence has diminished it. Tough drawEvents on the pitch have not helped either. A difficult FIFA World Cup qualifying draw pitted Greece against Turkey and Ukraine in Group 2, and a tough opening fixture away to neighbours Albania came too soon for a squad still on a high from Lisbon.

Broadband helps online advertising to overtake radio | | Guardian…
Guardian Unlimited – Apr 5, 2005
A dip in spending in 2001 has now been reversed emphatically, with internet advertising revenues four times larger than they were in 2000. “The dotcom bubble was fuelled by this great expectation that people would be spending lots of time online buying things. In truth, internet penetration was not high enough and there were security issues over paying, which have gone away now,” said Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the IAB. Mr Phillipson added that an increase in internet connections, particularly high-speed broadband connections, has persuaded companies to invest money in chasing online consumers. Broadband users account for half of web surfers in Britain with more than 6 million subscribers. BT announced yesterday that it had signed up 5 million customers. “It is a highly measurable medium, so that’s attractive to not only marketing directors but also managing directors and chief executives who are looking for a better return on their marketing pound,” said Mr Phillipson… 9% and direct mail with 14. Total advertising expenditure, buoyed by one-off events such as Euro 2004 and the Athens Olympics, rose by 6% to £16. The IAB expects the internet to overtake outdoor, another fast-growing medium with a 5% share, by 2006. With broadband penetration expected to increase further and more internet sites launching every day, the web has greater growth potential than more established platforms. “The inventory can go on and on, whereas it might be harder for other media to produce lots more,” said Mr Phillipson.

The Inside View: BBC Sport must not abuse their licence fee cash
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 3, 2005
Whether you are a fan of Holby City or Manchester City, free-to-air television comes at a price. It is to the eternal credit of BBC Sport that their output was not questioned during the debate that followed Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell’s vision for the corporation, outlined in the Commons on Wednesday. Whichever makeover show is regarded as the Beeb’s weakest link, few would vote to consign any sports programming to Room 101. Most of it enjoys a peerless reputation built up over decades. But the public has to pay for its public service broadcaster. But then I would say that, wouldn’t I? As a football commentator with ITV, it would be fair to assume that I may still be smarting from the loss of terrestrial Premiership rights last year… TalkSport have had more success with Test cricket rights, more success than the England and Wales Cricket Board have had in persuading BBC Television to bid for them anyway. It is estimated that £80 million a year of the Beeb’s sports budget is going on FA and Premiership football contracts. Nearly as much again has been spent on Euro 2004 and the next World Cup. That is before a single camera or commentator has been put into a stadium. They are currently bidding for Champions League football too. The BBC serve the minority sports better than most but top-flight football is a ratings game. You can understand the mutterings of the commercial television companies when ratings are effectively won by subsidies.

Zidane ended his international career after Les Bleus were knocked out of Euro 2004 with a 1-0 quarter-final defeat against eventual champions Greece. ?I?ve already said the French team was the most beautiful thing that happened to me. It would be nice for me to come back, but I do not want to talk about it,? he told sports daily L?Equipe on Friday. ?The biggest risk (in the qualifying campaign) is the game in Dublin against Ireland. That is the only one, I?m sure of it… Zidane ended his international career after Les Bleus were knocked out of Euro 2004 with a 1-0 quarter-final defeat against eventual champions Greece. ?I?ve already said the French team was the most beautiful thing that happened to me. Joe Lovejoy: Rooney makes a world of difference for England
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Apr 3, 2005
The poverty of opposition was such that victories by 4-0 and 2-0 were par for the course. Poland, who probably won’t even get to the World Cup, thrashed the Azeris 8-0. Proper perspective insists that just as England were not as awful as they were painted when David “Calamity” James cost them dear on a bad night in Vienna, so they are not as good as some of our more hysterical observers are suggesting now. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in between. What is happening is that England, as usual under Eriksson, are making routine work of qualifying from an undemanding group. Anybody who doubts that they were lucky with the draw should look at Group One, where Finland are fourth, behind Holland, the Czech Republic and Romania, or Group Two, where Denmark trail Ukraine, Greece and Turkey. The Group of Death England’s isn’t — unless it is death by a thousand missed chances… It is fair to say that England are progressing on the right lines, as good young players benefit from gaining international experience. Foremost among these is Wayne Rooney, a potential matchwinner in any company who is capable of dismantling much better teams than Northern Ireland. He proved that at Euro 2004, and his destructive mix of pace, power and explosive finishing could take the World Cup by storm. In Paul Robinson, England seem to have found a secure, reliable goalkeeper, and in front of him Eriksson is spoilt for choice at centre-back and may have as good a pair of full-backs as any in the world.

Socceroo Neill still affected by tackle
The Age – Apr 6, 2005
Carragher was left sidelined for six months with a broken leg, while Neill was sent off. Making matters worse in the eyes of many, Neill angrily disputedreferee Neale Barry’s decision to show him a red card. He was suspended for three games and, not surprisingly, copped ahammering in the British press. Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who was in charge thatday at Ewood Park, labelled it “a coward’s challenge” and Neill’sreaction “appalling”. Adding fuel to the fire, England defender Carragher was left indoubt for Euro 2004, although he ultimately recovered in time. The incident and subsequent furore stunned Neill and 18 monthslater he is still affected by the moment that made him a householdname in England. “Even now I find if I go into a tackle which would be normal towatch two other guys go in for, there’s always a bit more involvedin it,” Neill said… He was suspended for three games and, not surprisingly, copped ahammering in the British press. England’s finest awarded clean sweep
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Apr 7, 2005
The ECB’s new management would be well advised to heed one rather unexpected editorial warning, to be alert for betting scams. It should certainly interest sports editors as well as cricket administrators that more money is bet on England cricket matches than on football, that “great ogre”, as Paul Haigh expresses it in his enlightening article. More than £23 million was wagered on Betfair, the internet exchange, on England’s recent Test match in Johannesburg, £7 million on the England v France match at Euro 2004. It is for such surprises, great and small, that Wisden deserves to be treasured still. The new edition balances the factual, the readable and the indispensable in masterly fashion. If there is less space for some items, there is usually another source, such as the first publication this week of the Preparatory Schools’ Cricket Almanack, whose publishers, Wisteria Books, are planning something similar for senior schools, both state and independent. So long as the baton is handed on somehow… Pardon, who is acknowledged as Wisden’s greatest editor. Some of Pardon’s “Notes by the Editor” confirm that there is nothing new under the sun. 1905: The system which answers very well with football would not do for cricket. The idea of a county with the traditions of Surrey or Notts being relegated to the second-class as the result of one bad season could not be entertained for a moment. 1911: There was a grave fear early in the autumn that Derbyshire as a first-class county club would cease to exist. 1922: I object strongly to the importation of Australian players.

Zidane to call it a day in 2007
news24.com – Apr 2, 2005
"I'll finish in 2007 at the latest," he told Canal Plus TV on Friday. "My contract runs to 2007 and I want to see it out but then I'll end my career. "
Zidane, 32, would not rule out packing in his playing days earlier but he added:" It's not on the agenda. "
His Real Madrid team-mate David Beckham, 28, said on Friday he wanted to finish his career at Madrid. The England captain's contract also runs to 2007. Led by new coach, Russian team is back in action
RIA Novosti – Apr 6, 2005
He repeated his statement on Friday at a traditional pre-match press conference, acknowledging, however, that the situation is not an easy one. The Saturday match is of decisive importance for the Russian team, particularly with due account of the fact that on Saturday the Group 3 leaders face each other in Lisbon (their first match in Bratislava ended in a 2-2 draw, with Portugal trailing behind most of the game). Whatever the outcome of either match, Russia will not lose its chance to qualify into the next round, but it is clear that Syomin must steer his squad to victory on Saturday. Otherwise, the situation will get yet more difficult. At things stand now, Russia has a chance of getting up to the second place on Saturday in case they defeat Latvia and Slovakia goes down to Portugal.

The former clubs of Jacques Santini and Frank Arnesen will meet for the return leg at the Philips Stadium in seven day?s time to earn a place in the last four of the competition. Santini, who lasted only 13 matches as Spurs coach at the start of the season, joined Lyon in 1997, first as technical director, and then as first-team coach, guiding them to French league cup victory in 2001 and their first-ever league championship the following season. A month before Tottenham announced Santini was to join Spurs after Euro 2004, the club recruited Danish coach Frank Arnesen as its new sporting director. Arnesen joined from PSV Eindhoven, where he had responsibility as Technical Director for all footballing issues including scouting, youth development and player transfers for ten seasons. The role he has continued beyond Santini?s resignation in November includes taking charge of all football related matters and the recruitment of key personnel, taking responsibility for developing and implementing youth, scouting, medical and international policy, as well as overseeing the trading of players in consultation with the First Team management. “On paper they could have worked together. But Frank Arnesen was a very creative, forward-thinking and expansive player – whereas I think Santini was very much the opposite, more a case of being organised, disciplined and happy not conceding goals… But Frank Arnesen was a very creative, forward-thinking and expansive player – whereas I think Santini was very much the opposite, more a case of being organised, disciplined and happy not conceding goals. “That sort of arrangement can work if the two people have the same principles and ideals and work very closely. But it seems that has not happened,” said Gary Stevens, who joined Spurs as a ?300,000 right back from Brighton in 1983. Stevens playing career for Spurs was cut short in November 1986 when he suffered a serious knee injury in a tackle from Wimbledon’s Vinnie Jones.

Earlier this year, NBA veteran Al Harrington came out in strong support of California’s Prop. 64 to legalize marijuana not only because he thinks it should be legal, but because he sees marijuana legalization and drug policy reform as a racial equity issue. And minorities, we’re the ones that are locked up behind it.”We delineated an approximately 4 cM region of LOH between loci D8S264 and D8S262 on chromosome 8p23.3 (unpublished data).
