But that’s where the rivalry ends,” agrees his opposite number Jose Pekerman. However, be it in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the FIFA World Youth Championship or the FIFA Confederations Cup, it is always interesting to see how the press seize on each star-studded encounter between the two nations. The first ’round’ of this mini-saga was penned on 8 June 2005, when the Albicelestes gave their Brazilian counterparts a footballing lesson in a 3-1 win in Buenos Aires, and became the first South American outfit to book their passage to the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006?. The following day the Argentine press heaped praise on their heroes and poked fun at the samba stars, while the Brazilian journalists were left ruefully lamenting what might have been. This was, however, only the beginning. The joy of youthJune 28 saw the Argentina and Brazil U-20 teams square off in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005.

A German consumer organisation?has complained to the Commission?that this is an?abuse of a?monopoly position. Brief News:The credit card company MasterCard has an exclusive agreement with the German football federation (DFB) for the latter to be the official and exclusive credit card for the FIFA World Cup 2006. No other cards will be accepted. The Federation of German Consumer Organisations [Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband] has taken exception to this arrangement and?has called on the Commission and the German cartel office?to take legal action against the German football federation. It argues that the agreement cannot be justified by?saying that other methods of payment such as debit or bank transfer payments are permissible and?points out that a?substantial number of tickets will be bought by foreigners who are likely to have to pay high fees to make foreign transfer payments. In practice FIFA and the DFB have a monopoly which should not lead to discrimination against non-German consumers, argues the consumer organisation… A German consumer organisation?has complained to the Commission?that this is an?abuse of a?monopoly position. Beenhakker: T&T can still reach Germany 2006
Jamaica Observer – Apr 6, 2005
“It’s a big challenge for me to realise that I believe for the first time in history the team can go to a World Championship,” Beenhakker told the Trinidad Express Monday. “And I like big challenges, in my life, always in my life, I love it, and I can only assure that from the beginning I will do everything that is in my possibilities to do a good job together with the players and with the people around the team, of course, with the staff members, we will go for it. ”
Beenhakker arrived in Trinidad Monday for a four-day stay, and is expected to meet with top-level Trinidad football officials, including FIFA vice-president Jack Warner and Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation president Oliver Camps. He was named last week as a replacement for Bertille St Clair, who was sacked after a string of poor performances in the first three matches of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying final round. “It’s a difficult situation after the first three matches, but it’s not hopeless, and I think there is still a lot of possibility to qualify for Germany 2006,” Beenhakker pointed out. “And if I didn’t have the confidence to do the job, I would not (be) here. It’s as simple as that.

As the final whistle sounded in Seoul’s World Cup Stadium at around 10 p. in the evening of March 30, Jo Bonfrere, the coach of South Korea’s football team, shook hands with his opposite number, Uzbekistan’s coach Jurgen Gede, and walked down the tunnel. Within a week, one of the two Europeans would be out of a job, sacked by a disgruntled national football association. Prior to the final stage World Cup qualification game between Uzbekistan and South Korea, one would have been hard-pressed to guess which coach would be heading home.

Sony Signs $305 Million FIFA Sponsorship Deal
Gamasutra – Apr 6, 2005
Under the terms of the deal, Sony will have “core sponsorship rights” to all FIFA competitions over the seven years, most notably the World Cups of 2010, which will take place in South Africa, and 2014. The deal does not, however, prevent other companies in the game space, such as Electronic Arts, from using official FIFA player and stadium details, since video game licensing falls under separate conditions. Ironically, Microsoft is one of the sponsors of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, with Sony?s sponsorship only beginning in 2007, after the finals in Germany. The World Cup is the largest single sports event in the world, with a cumulative global TV audience for the 2002 event of 30 billion, with 1 billion tuning in for the final between Brazil and Germany. “I am delighted and very proud that Sony has chosen FIFA and football for this momentous deal which creates a true partnership with many opportunities for taking the relationship far beyond a classical sponsorship,” said FIFA president Sepp Blatter. Sony chairman Nobuyuki Idei added: “FIFA has a spectacular reach around the world through the universal language of football and it is this unique attribute that convinced us to commit to this global sponsorship deal. This is an ideal opportunity for us to leverage the powerful assets of the Sony Group… Ironically, Microsoft is one of the sponsors of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, with Sony?s sponsorship only beginning in 2007, after the finals in Germany. El Khemisy declared on handing his letter of resignation to the federation?s directors. ?It?s the right thing to do after a result like that,? El Khemisy declared on handing his letter of resignation to the federation?s directors… El Khemisy had only taken up the post last August when he succeeded the Croat Ilija Loncarevic. One week prior to the coach?s resignation, the president of the Libyan football federation (LFF), Al Saadi Gaddafi, himself stepped down, a decision which resulted in the suspension of the national championship. With six qualifying matches played in their World Cup qualifying campaign, Libya lie in fourth place in Group 3 of the African zone. In what is a very competitive group containing C?te d?Ivoire, Cameroon and Egypt, Libya need to finish at least third just to qualify for the 2006 CAF African Cup of Nations, with only first place providing a ticket to Germany 2006. Their next encounter is on 3 June in Tripoli against the Ivorian group leaders. notas_de_prensa_archivo.

SA continue bid for O’Brien
BBC News – Apr 7, 2005
Danny Jordaan, outgoing CEO of the South Africa Football Association (Safa),
said he has taken personal charge of the efforts to have Fifa allow O’Brien play for the country. A specific Fifa rule, which allowed under-23 players with dual nationalities to switch nationalities under certain conditions, expired at the end of 2004. Safa are still waiting for O’Brien to be granted a passport by the country’s Home Affairs department, so they can process the application with Fifa.

ABC Sport – Rugby Union – Flatley gives up Reds’ captaincy
abc.net.au – Apr 6, 2005
Flatley has missed the past two Super 12 matches after suffering the latest in a series of head knocks against the Crusaders on March 12. With symptoms of concussion persisting, he was ruled out of the Reds tour of South Africa where they will play the Stormers and Bulls in the coming fortnight. It is the latest in a series of injuries which have meant the Wallabies regular, who played a leading role in Australia’s World Cup campaign in 2003, has only captained the state 10 times since being named captain at the start of last season. “I want to concentrate solely on getting fit again and getting back to playing my best football without any other distractions getting in the way,” he said in a statement released by the Reds. “Captaining the Reds is a huge responsibility and while it may be a bit selfish of me to stand down in order to get myself fit and to regain my form, I believe it’s also in the best interests of the team. “I’ve had a lot of injuries and it’s hard not being there week in, week out as a captain should be. I need to get fit again and then come back and play good football without worrying about the captaincy… “Captaining the Reds is a huge responsibility and while it may be a bit selfish of me to stand down in order to get myself fit and to regain my form, I believe it’s also in the best interests of the team. “I’ve had a lot of injuries and it’s hard not being there week in, week out as a captain should be. I need to get fit again and then come back and play good football without worrying about the captaincy. “I’ll still be involved in leadership issues within the team but it’s a good time to step down as skipper. ”

Although Nick Stiles was Flatley’s deputy, Reds coach Jeff Miller elevated Sharpe to the captaincy when Flatley was ruled out earlier this season. Sharpe is currently negotiating with both the Reds and Perth’s new Super 14 franchise and leadership is a key issue for the Wallabies vice-captain, with the offer of captaincy in the West a major incentive to a move. The lock captained the Wallabies for the Bledisloe Cup Test in New Zealand last year after regular skipper George Gregan was ruled out with injury and is an option to take over that mantle permanently from Gregan.

Fifa suffers kit setback
BBC News – Apr 6, 2005
Judge Ingrid Kefer made the decision at the start of a lawsuit filed against Fifa by Puma, the maker of the uniforms. “There is nothing [in the rules of football] that says shorts and shirts must not be linked together,” Kefer said. She went on to rule that football’s governing body had been arbitrary in the enforcement of its rules and broke cartel regulations. The sportswear manufacturer is seeking US$2. 6 million in damages from Fifa and a declaration that it can market the uniform. Puma have alleged that Fifa’s decision was influenced by rivals Adidas, an official partner of football’s governing body… Puma have alleged that Fifa’s decision was influenced by rivals Adidas, an official partner of football’s governing body. The Indomitable Lions wore a catsuit, combining a jersey and short into a single piece of kit, which Fifa said was a violation of the game’s rules. Fifa fined the Central African nation US$150,000 for wearing the one-piece uniform and also docked six points from the country’s qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup finals, which will be hosted by Germany. The deduction of points was subsequently reversed at a Fifa congress in Paris. Judge Kefer gave Fifa’s lawyers four weeks to forward a written statement and a final ruling on the case is expected on Wednesday 1 June. Cameroon and Puma have claimed they had approval from Fifa and the Confederation of African Football to wear the kit.

Koop, who has refereed in the top flight of German soccer for all but one season since 1996, originally justified his decision not to report Hoyzer immediately by saying he thought his colleague was just bragging. The scandal has been a huge embarrassment to German football authorities as they finish preparations to host the 2006 World Cup.

“If I would have got a gold medal I would have been bitter and said, look at this (expletive) I had to put up with. I was a world champion and I was bitter coming home. ”

Zardo, 24, won the 2004 two-man World Cup title with Lueders and is regarded as one of the world’s best brakemen. He said he was fed up with the lack of support and four years of backstabbing which he expected would escalate as the Olympics approached. The move stunned and angered Lueders, whose trophy case includes 63 World Cup medals, back-to-back world championships in the two-man competition and Olympic gold from Nagano, Japan. “It’s very sad that an athlete would have a chance to go to the Olympic Games and throw it away,” said Lueders, adding he wouldn’t comment on Zardo’s allegations, which he deemed “very inappropriate. ”

Zardo is negotiating with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos and is hoping to land a spot on their special teams. “I’d rather be a nobody in football than a world champion in bobsled,” said Zardo, who was on the 2000 Canadian team at the global junior championships. Eskimos spokesman Dan Jamieson said “there is interest on our part and presumably his. ”

Lueders said it was too early to say if Zardo’s decision would impact preparations for the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. “I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves here,” he said. “There’s an entire World Cup season, first of all, that we have to worry about.

Malawi results enrage MPs
BBC News – Apr 7, 2005
The parliamentarians, dissatisfied with the national team’s results in the 2006 World Cup qualifying series, blamed Banda for the country’s flagging football fortunes. The Flames, as Malawi’s national team is known, sit at the bottom of Group Five with three points. Justine Malewezi, former vice-president but now a sitting MP, was unhappy that the team travelled to Tunisia for their last match without sufficient funds. The Flames were thrashed 7-0 by the reigning African champions in their last game. It took six days for the team to return home, due to financial constraints which complicated their return journey through Ethiopia.

The Patriots entered their own house of horrors against a desperate team that was buoyed by largely the same defense that made last year’s AFC title game a nightmare, weathered some early troubles, and never gave the Broncos a hint of life after the middle of the second quarter. The numbers don’t necessarily reflect it, but it was impressive. The NFC is mediocre, too. The Seahawks needed a goalline stand and an officiating disaster to hold off the Bills at home. The Vikings can score. The Giants and Redskins have no balance. And the Falcons defense can stop anybody.
