WORLD CUP 2006: San Siro, an Italian icon – Apr 12, 2005
The Italians? semi-final with Hugo Meisl?s much-feared Austria was a true classic , and in the end star striker Giuseppe Meazza led the way to a slim 1-0 win. The home side then marched on to Rome where they beat the Czechs to lift their first Jules Rimet trophy. The larger chunk of a century later, and after the stadium had become home to one of the most visceral and colourful rivalries in all of football, the San Siro took centre stage once more as the World Cup returned to Italy in 1990. After five phases of modernisation, the new ground hardly resembled the original, but somehow managed to maintain the intended feel and atmosphere. This time, instead of acting as the launching pad for Italian success, the San Siro surged West Germany into the sporting stratosphere. Led by present-day Hungary boss Lothar Matthaus and current Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Franz Beckenbauer?s Germans played in all but one of the six matches staged in Milan. And the one they did not feature in turned out to be the remarkable opening match in which African outsiders Cameroon stunned Diego Maradona and holders Argentina in one of the all-time finals upsets.

Beckenbauer in Platini face-off – Apr 13, 2005
The reason for making this change is that odd years do not interfere with World Cups or European Championships. Such a move would fit neatly with Beckenbauer’s plans. He is organising the 2006 World Cup in Germany and, should that be a success, he would go into a 2007 election campaign with the halo of having both secured and hosted unified Germany’s first World Cup. Beckenbauer will start as favourite. The UEFA hierarchy have long sought to get him involved and in 2001, when they tried to oust Blatter as FIFA president by supporting the candidature of Issa Hayatou in the 2002 election, they even approached Beckenbauer to be UEFA’s standard bearer. Platini, on the other hand, is seen in UEFA circles as being under Blatter’s sway and an inexperienced administrator.

Odegbami joins calls for foreign coach
Vanguard – Apr 13, 2005
He also added his voice to the call on the NFA to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles even though he says he believes the present coach, Christian Chukwu is capable of qualifying the team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup holding in Germany. Chief Odegbami recently appointed Sole Administrator of Premier League debutantes, Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta was reacting on the burning national issues which has pitched football loving Nigerians against the NFA which has been described as inefficient by Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha. Speaking on a Metro FM radio sports programme monitored in Lagos, the former chairman of the National Institute of Sports (NIS) board said he was sure FIFA would not ban Nigeria, claiming that the country was too ‘big’ and ‘important’ for FIFA to be banned, adding that the ban threat was being overblown by the media. This is however in conflict with the warning issued by FIFA instructor and administrator, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde that those in authority should comply with FIFA’s directive on the issue of the vexed decree before it is too late. Okocha also speaking on the issue to the BBC from his London base called on the NFA to do something urgent to ensure that the FIFA deadline is met as a ban on Nigeria, he said, would destroy the future of young Nigerian players… Okocha also speaking on the issue to the BBC from his London base called on the NFA to do something urgent to ensure that the FIFA deadline is met as a ban on Nigeria, he said, would destroy the future of young Nigerian players. “If they (NFA) fail to obey the instructions of FIFA, the international careers of so many young players in Nigeria will be destroyed”, Okocha told the BBC, stressing that he has said so much on problems of the national team but his views are not taken seriously. FIFA once banned Nigeria from football in 1989 after it discovered some discrepancies in the ages of some Flying Eagles players registered by the NFA for one of its competitions causing the country to miss the World Youth Championship and Under -17 Championship for 1991. Odegbami said even though he was optimistic Chukwu could qualify the Eagles for the World Cup, that “majority of Nigerians however feel he does not have the technical capacity to handle the team at the World Cup”, adding that if the NFA wants to hire a foreign coach they should do it now before the team qualifies for the World Cup and not after so that confusion of the past is not repeated.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Internationals | Henry tips Jones for Lions…
BBC News – Apr 12, 2005
“At the moment I would think Stephen Jones would have his head in front by a considerable margin,” Henry said. “Stephen is a world-class player now, a very good goal-kicker, a good kicker from hand and navigates the team well. ”

England’s World Cup-winning fly-half Jonny Wilkinson is a possible late arrival to the 44-man Lions squad.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Internationals | Charvis hints at 2006 retir…
BBC News – Apr 13, 2005

Charvis is set to make only his 17th start for the Falcons in Friday’s league match against Northampton. Newcastle lie seventh in the Zurich Premiership but Charvis insists they have not given up hope of Heineken Cup qualification. “I’m not the greatest mathematician around, so I don’t know what our odds are for making the Heineken Cup next year, but if we win our last two games we should be in the Wild Card play-offs,” he added. “I am happy to come back into the team at this point, because there is really something we can aim for and get our teeth stuck in to.

International Cricket Officials arrive
Port Vila Presse – Apr 13, 2005
Six countries will compete in the EAP Cricket Cup including Samoa, Japan, Indonesia, Cook Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. The tournament will be hosted by the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA), and will involve five days of round matches, followed by a final. The winner will advance to the next stage of World Cup qualification. Important components of the ICC visit include ground inspections of new cricket facilities next to the Korman Stadium and at Club Hippique, and a drive to attract local corporate and government support for the tournament. ICC EAP Regional Manager Tim Anderson said the EAP Cricket Cup is a significant regional sporting event that presents Vanuatu with a unique opportunity to gain exposure on an international scale. “Cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in Vanuatu, and is a sport that attracts considerable global attention,” stated Anderson. “Given the EAP Cricket Cup is a part of the ICC’s World Cup qualifying structure and includes teams from both Asia and the Pacific, we expect a lot of interest both locally, and throughout the cricket playing world,” he added.

BBC SPORT | Other Sport | Snooker | Dott hopes to make dashing return
BBC News – Apr 14, 2005
“My form’s been quite good. I think I’ve played really well all year and I’ve been relatively consistent. ”

Dott began this season ranked 15th in the world but reaching the final of the Malta Cup and the last eight of the UK Championship has propelled him to a provisional ranking of eighth. “I’ve lost my last couple of first rounds but in Ireland I was ill and was close to actually pulling out. I had some sort of bug,” he said. “And anyone who goes with me knows I lose in China constantly – it’s a waste of time me going. Other than that, I’ve been playing quite well.

Players in awe of snooker’s Wembley – Apr 14, 2005
Though he has contested (and lost) six Embassy World Championship finals, Jimmy White still becomes so nervous before he draws back the pink curtains to make his entrance that he usually has to ask Terry Griffiths to light his last cigarette because his hands are shaking so badly. “Even Stephen Hendry, after his six titles, will have trouble making his legs work when those curtains open,” explains Griffiths, champion in 1979 and now a member of the BBC commentary team. This year’s finals fortnight begins tomorrow. “It’s only four steps down to the floor, but they really ought to put up bannisters to give you something to hold on to,” Griffiths says. “The atmosphere and magnitude of the event just hit you… First published in 1966 and containing articles by Fleet Street ‘legends’ such as E W Swanton, Bryon Butler, Lance Tingay, David Miller (who is still in the service of this parish) and Donald Saunders, the football and boxing correspondent, the ageing pages still crackle with vitality. A quick scan of the contents promises descriptions of Sir Gordon Richards winning the 1953 Derby on Pinza, Donald Bradman being out for but a single run in the Second Test at Lord’s in 1930, Ben Hogan and Little Mo, Ingemar Johansson and Floyd Patterson plus, inevitably, the 1966 World Cup final. What memorable sports event have you seen with your own eyes? An FA Cup final or a school’s second XI cricket match? It need not be ‘great’, merely unique in its own way. In a competition open only to those aged 18 and under, I will offer I Was There as the prize for the best entry in the hope that the old masters’ words will inspire the next generation of sports writers. Reports, which should be no more than 300 words and may be published in this column, can be sent to me at the usual address or by e-mail to.

Power switch | World dispatch | Guardian Unlimited
Guardian Unlimited – Apr 14, 2005
This ill-advised but well-intentioned stunt was deemed so offensive that thousands of Communist Youth League members marched on their dormitory to demand an apology. En route, the protesters are said to have smashed the windows of at least one Japanese restaurant. Violence also erupted during the Asia Cup last summer when a large mob of Chinese fans rained bottles on a coach full of Japanese supporters and broke the window of a Japanese diplomatic car. At a government level, political relations between Asia’s two most powerful nations are at their lowest point in decades. China’s leaders have refused regular summit meetings with Japan’s prime minister Junichiro Koizumi since 2001, when he began annual visits to the controversial Yasukuni shrine to Japan’s fallen soldiers, including war criminals. Increasingly anxious about the hostility and growing strength of its giant neighbour, the government in Tokyo has more than halved its economic aid to China. “What we have now is a relationship that is economically warm and politically cold,” said Professor Zhou Yongsheng from China Foreign Affairs University, an expert in Sino-Japanese relations.

Arena football The Los Angeles County coroner must wait for test results on the brain tissue of Arena Football League lineman Al Lucas before determining why he died during a game Sunday in L.

If you are desperate for a quarterback, take a long look at Siemian. The Raiders pass defense ranks near the bottom of the league, so you can expect Gary Kubiak to lean on his inexperienced quarterback to move the ball. Siemian may not light it up, but he’ll turn in a solid fantasy performance. What are you gonna do, quit? Not an option. Because we’re missionaries, and we’re doing God’s work. When you combine that with naive “youthful invincibility,” you get kids who will skip happily toward danger, secure in the knowledge that God will protect them. There’s actually a belief in Mormonism that if you die “in the field,” you automatically go to the celestial kingdom (heaven) it’s practically a reward. Come, get mauled by a rabid pit bull for Jesus.Good day, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Clayton, and I’ll be your conference operator today. At this time, I’d like to welcome everyone to DIRECTV’s Fourth Quarter 2010 cheap jordan Earnings Conference Call. [Operator Instructions] It is now my pleasure to turn the call over to your host, Jonathan Rubin, Senior Vice President Wholesale Jerseys of Investor Relations and Financial Planning. Sir, you may begin.5. DeVante Parker (MIA). Parker provides an interesting conundrum for the drafting community, which has been demonstrated by the wild swings in his ADP. Parker is coming off foot surgery. The word is that he will be ready for week 1 but will miss training camp and pre season, which is far from good for a rookie. The Miami receiving corps strike no fear into opposing defensive coordinators and Parker is too talented to sit for too long, but expect him to start behind WRs Greg Jennings, Kenny Stills and Jarvis Landry, not to mention TE Jordan Cameron. Stills was the deep threat at Louisville, but Stills is an established deep threat so Parker’s best shot at real playing time will come at the expense of Jennings. Personally, I wouldn’t draft Jennings in the deepest of leagues as his best days are behind him and Parker will be supplanting in by week 4. That being said, I wouldn’t reach for him before the 10th round.Season Four January thru March Cheap Jerseys is Conception Season While the overlap of the past two seasons (Sports and Black and Tan) extends into a Replica Oakleys cold January, we begin yet another season known as Conception season. As the Stanley Cup play offs and Super Bowl close out the Sports season, the sales of the Black and Tan season slow down as well (perhaps a coincidence I do not know). Even the snow stops cold in jordan sale January but the normal temperatures remains below freezing (32 degrees).
