Barthez given six-month suspension
CNN International – Apr 22, 2005
The 33-year-old, a member of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000-winning squads, said he intends to carry on training during his suspension. "I knew I’d be sanctioned," said Barthez. "I’ll prepare for the next season with Marseille and get ready for the national team because my goal is to play in the (2006) World Cup. "Barthez will miss five games, the last four matches of the Ligue 1 season, and France’s next friendly against Hungary on May 31. He will however be able to play for Marseille in Nantes on Saturday. Barthez will also be available for France’s friendly against Argentina in Paris on August 17 and their World Cup qualifiers against Faroe Islands on September 3, Ireland on September 7, Switzerland on October 8 and Cyprus on October 12. The goalkeeper was reported for spitting at Moroccan referee Abdellah El Achiri during a friendly between Wydad Casablanca and Marseille in February.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | South Africa wants Nations Cup switch
BBC News – Apr 21, 2005
The continent’s premier competition has been held in even-numbered years for nearly half a century but South Africa would like Caf to stage the competition in years ending in an odd number. “We think it would be in Caf’s interest to stage the Cup of Nations in a year that does not compete with the World Cup,” Irvin Khoza, the vice-president of the South African Football Association (Safa), told BBC Sport. “The Nations Cup must have its own status and its own character because if it is staged in the same year as the World Cup, like next year, it becomes a non-event.

WORLD CUP 2006: Coach Hernandez keeps cool about Panama’s…
noticias.info – Apr 22, 2005
There’s no denying that it’s a step in the right direction because of Mexico’s great tradition, but if you look at the table we will only profit from it if they don’t drop points against the other teams. Given the significance of the result, what was the atmosphere like in the dressing room after the game?
One of conviction, of self-belief. I’ve been talking about nothing else but getting to the World Cup for 18 months now. And holding our own against a side ranked in the top 10 in the world means players begin to fancy their chances of actually doing it. The feeling is one of calm, of confidence in ourselves, and that?s what we need if we’re going to achieve our goals. Luis Tejada scored the all-important equaliser with an amazing overhead kick. What did you have to say to him after the game?
I congratulated him, of course! I hadn’t included him in the national squad before, but he worked hard to improve some negative aspects of his game and there you have the result… Are we witnessing the emergence of a new generation of players in the country?
There’s certainly a fresh generation of players coming through. But I think that the real change in Panamanian football will come when we get a truly resounding result. Then we can work on the entire structure of the sport in Panama, with different planning and working methods. And how do you mean to achieve that?
By qualifying for the World Cup! (laughs). What is the key to qualifying?
We have to maintain the simplicity and humility with which we’ve played until now. When you get a result like the one against Mexico, it’s easy for the public and media to get carried away by the euphoria and it ends up affecting the players.

Giving New Dimension to Sports
Arab News – Apr 22, 2005
The Kingdom qualified for the World Cup three times in a row ? in the United States in 1994, France in 1998 and Korea and Japan in 2002. The Kingdom is most likely to repeat this for the fourth time by qualifying for the World Cup in Germany in 2006. ?Over the years, the standard of the Kingdom?s football has maintained a rising graph,? says another football writer. It is now a name to reckon with in the international arena. In the past few years in particular it has changed dramatically. At Gulf level, the Kingdom has won the championship three times ? in UAE in 1996, in the Kingdom in 2000, and in Kuwait in 2002. Local clubs like Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Hilal, Nasr and Shabab say they owe a lot to the media for the exposure given to their sports activities.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Schafer reports Cameroon to Fifa
BBC News – Apr 21, 2005
The German’s contract was scheduled to expire in July 2006 but he was dismissed by Cameroon’s football federation (Fecafoot) last November following some disappointing results. Nearly half of the money Schafer is claiming, around $150,000, represents over six months of salary arrears. The rest is for wrongful termination of contract… But the Indomitable Lions’ performances dropped after the 2002 World Cup, where they failed to get past the group stages. Cameroon were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2004 Nations Cup, and were placed third in Group Three of 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifying when Schafer was sacked.

700,000 fans disappointed after World Cup draw
Expatica – Apr 22, 2005
For some 700,000 fans though, the news was not good as they would have received a letter stating “unfortunately, you have not been allocated any tickets for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany”. Organisers said that they had received 900,000 applications from 195 countries for 8. 208,455 fans from all over the world were drawn in the lottery that was conducted on 15 April for the 812,000 tickets on offer in the first phase.

Tunisia offer Malawi a coach
BBC News – Apr 22, 2005
“While the Tunisians were happy to have beaten Malawi, they were concerned with the number of goals scored against the Flames. “I wish all countries could emulate the good example taken by Tunisia,” Banda added. Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamirandu said his body was happy to have a coach who is fully sponsored as a way of cutting down costs in the FA. “We will make sure that our current local coaches work as understudies with the expatriate when he arrives,” he said. UEFA impose homegrown rules

“Will the object of these proposals actually be achieved? Perhaps all that will happen is that some clubs will go abroad to bring in players at an even younger age. The congress also agreed with Lennart Johansson extending his final term as UEFA president for another year. The 75-year-old Swede was originally due to step down in 2006 but has postponed his anticipated retirement in order to fall into line with FIFA policy not to hold elections in a World Cup year. As a result, Johansson will remain in charge till 2007, a scenario which will allow German World Cup legend Franz Beckenbauer to put his name forward for the top UEFA post. Beckenbauer’s current priority is to organise the World Cup in his homeland next year after which he is expected to stand for the UEFA presidency against Michel Platini, the other main contender who, like Beckenbauer, enjoyed a glittering playing career and is now one of the most influential administrators in European football. ‘If United’s board have any sense they will approach Celtic…
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 22, 2005
Following Ferguson is completely different. Pearce is not expected to challenge Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. City crave decent, consistent football, some good Cup runs and a sustained challenge for a UEFA Cup slot, not gate-crashing the roped-off area for the Champions League glitterati. Whoever follows Ferguson will be expected to spend wisely, shape an attractive, trophy-winning team immediately and dethrone Mourinho. That is why as the Old Trafford hierarchy spend the next 14 months considering who can possibly replace Ferguson their thoughts can turn only in one direction: north to Glasgow’s East End. There is only one man in Britain with the experience and personality suited to be Ferguson’s successor and he is Martin O’Neill… Sculpted from Ferguson’s driven mould, Keane possesses the intelligence and hunger to make an outstanding manager one day, but picking up the reins from a giant like Ferguson at a wealthy club like United cannot compare with the far easier task facing Pearce, Kevin Keegan’s successor. Revitalising City after they became stale under Keegan is not the most arduous of assignments for Pearce, who has tightened up training and shown true leadership. Following Ferguson is completely different. Pearce is not expected to challenge Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

Six of the qualifying groups will contain seven teams, and the other eight, with the hosts filling the other two spots in the 16-team tournament. The qualifying competition will begin in the autumn of 2006, after the World Cup in Germany in the summer. The format for Uefa Euro 2004 in Portugal involved 10 group winners qualifying, along with the host country and the winners of five qualifying play-offs staged over two legs on a home-and-away basis.

2006 All-Ireland finals change confirmed

The Guinness hurling final will be played on September 3, with the Bank of Ireland football decider taking place a fortnight later on September 17. In recent years, the hurling final has been held on the second Sunday in September and the football final has been played on the fourth Sunday of the month. However, with the sporting world’s focus to be firmly fixed on the Ryder Cup at the K Club in County Kildare from September 22 to 24, the GAA has decided to moved its showpiece matches. uefa –>Updated: April 22, 2005Legendary pair in frame for Uefa postFranz Beckenbauer and Michel Platini look set to battle to become the nextUEFA president. The election itself may still be two years’ away but the race for the top jobin European football looks likely to be between the legendary pair. The German World Cup-winning captain and coach and his equally illustriousFrench rival have emerged as the two main candidates to take over from theageing Lennart Johansson when the Swede steps down in 2007. Johansson had been due to hand over the reins next year but UEFA’s 52-nationcongress gave him a mandate yesterday to carry on for an extra 12 months to fallinto line with FIFA policy of elections not being held in even years, when thereis a major tournament. Perfect timing in terms of Beckenbauer’s ambitions. The highly respectedformer international defender is head of the organising committee for nextyear’s World Cup in his homeland and has too much on his plate at present to getembroiled in an election campaign.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Delays cause confusion in China
BBC News – Apr 22, 2005
“Seven of my last eight events have had full day weather delays so I am getting used to it. ”

Colin Montgomerie had threatened to join the leaders after an opening 68 and four more birdies in his second round. But the Ryder Cup star sunk two late bogeys to card a 70 and remain and three off the pace on six under. “I dropped a couple of shots coming in which was a pity because I was getting a bit tired and trying to rush to get finished,” said Montgomerie. A majestic coliseum for the modern age
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 21, 2005
At 436ft tall and 1,036ft long, the arch is the longest single roof structure in the world. Even romantics who bemoan the loss of Wembley’s cherished Twin Towers will admit that it makes an impressive introduction to the new stadium. Wembley will be a landmark for London and one that will have a dramatic effect on the skyline, with the arch being visible right across the city. When lit on a clear evening, it will be seen from Canary Wharf, 13 miles away advertisement… There are plans for new public squares, boulevards, leisure facilities, shops, restaurants and cafes. With the surroundings set to improve dramatically this should all work to ensure that a day out at Wembley is an even better experience for fans. The 2006 FA Cup final will represent the stadium’s official launch, but because the project is so huge, there are plans to stage two ‘ramp-up’ events, possibly involving a schoolboys international or Under-21 game. The Stadium will generate some £229 million in visitor expenditure each year, at the stadium and from spending in shops, bars, hotels and leisure facilities in and around the site and elsewhere in London. This is an increase of £119 million over the annual expenditure attracted by the original stadium. The benefits to the local economy, London and sports fans everywhere will eventually outweigh the huge cost. This is truly a stadium not just for the 21st century but into the future.
