It wasn’t only a great year for football, as Dom Pérignon’s…
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 30, 2005
Just to increase the pressure, next year sees the 40th anniversary of that glorious July day when England beat Germany 4-2 at Wembley to lift the Jules Rimet trophy. The saying might famously be “nostalgia ain’t what it used to be”, but, for those of us of a certain age, just seeing the names of Banks; Cohen; Wilson; Stiles; Charlton J; Moore; Ball; Hunt; Charlton R; Hurst and Peters brings a lump to the throat. And when one remembers that Bobby Moore is no longer with us, struck down by cancer in 1993 aged 51, it brings a tear to the eye… And only last week it was announced that Alan Ball was selling his World Cup medal in order to raise funds for his children and grandchildren. The £120,000 that Ball’s medal is expected to fetch (roughly equivalent to a fortnight’s wages for some of today’s stars) will buy him only 212 bottles of the fiendishly expensive 1966 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque. Which would you rather have?• For those football lovers for whom money is no object, the 1966 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque is available at Harrods, 020 7730 1234, at £565 a bottle. • A bottle of 1966 Dom Pérignon, signed by the remaining members of the World Cup-winning team, will be auctioned later this year, with the proceeds going to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK. Velappan, who is to be replaced by fellow Malaysian Paul Mony as the AFC?s top administrator in January, said the world could no longer belittle Asian football, especially after its excellent performance in the 2002 World Cup. With Australia set to strengthen Asia?s ranks with a likely move from Oceania to the AFC in the near future, the 69-year-old said Asian countries should look to increase their current World Cup allocation of four and a half places. ?Nobody should bully or short-change Asia because it is going to be the continent of the future,? said Velappan. ?It is going to be an influential part of world football. ?As the quality of our players and teams continues to improve, we should be looking at getting as many places as Europe. We should not be prepared to stay with four or five places forever. ?In the 2002 tournament, co-hosts South Korea reached the semifinals while Japan advanced to the last 16… ?In the 2002 tournament, co-hosts South Korea reached the semifinals while Japan advanced to the last 16. Velappan famously led a walkout of Asian delegates during the 1999 FIFA Congress in Los Angeles when the world governing body gave Asia just two qualifying places for 2002 in addition to the co-hosts? automatic berths. For the 2006 World Cup, Asia has four automatic places and could secure a fifth in a playoff against a team from the CONCACAF region. Europe has 13 plus hosts Germany. ?I have dedicated my life to football in Asia and will continue to do that. I have stood firm for Asia,? said Velappan, AFC general secretary for 27 years during which he has overseen the body?s growth from a one-man show to an organization with around 100 staff.

Pirates and their main rivals Kaizer Chiefs in January teamed up with the huge Zionist Christian Church to sell mobile phone cards at matches and religious services for Vodacom. Brand manager Zodwa Khoza, Khoza?s daughter, said they had met their 10-year target in six months but offered no financial details. World Cup dream: Khoza surprised his colleagues at the South African Football Association (SAFA) in 1997 when he told them it was time to bid to host the World Cup a global sporting showpiece. He put his own cash into the campaign for a year before corporate South Africa warmed up to the idea, resulting in a gallant but failed effort to bring the 2006 World Cup to the country once considered a pariah because of apartheid. Disappointment was quickly forgotten when South Africa was awarded the 2010 event, which FIFA says will raise billions of rands in tourism earnings, television rights and gate takings. Commentators say the World Cup will leave a legacy of new soccer stadiums in a country where the sport has often relied on rugby or cricket facilities, as well as training venues and improved roads and rail systems. Orlando Pirates runs an academy to nurture young talent, some of them orphans rescued from abject poverty.

Leavis who said of a 1920s literary circle: “The Sitwells belong to the history of publicity rather than the history of poetry. ” So let us try to place Beckham in the history of football, rather than the history of publicity. After the disaster of his sending-off for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup finals, Beckham became the key player in Manchester United’s annus mirabilis of the next season — an exceptional triumph of strength and ability. It is a lofty achievement, but such achievements get thinner on the ground after that. Manchester United declined from the peak and so did Beckham. His performance at the 2002 World Cup finals was spoilt by injury… Which is a good start. And he will also have Wayne Rooney, and that is a great deal more. It is just possible that England will go into the 2006 World Cup finals with the strongest team for at least 16 years. In such circumstances, Beckham’s worth index could rise like a thermometer in a heat wave. Beckham’s fame index will remain high regardless, but he is not satisfied by fame alone. He wants worth as well. Famous though he is, he is still striving for greater worth.

But another reason for German soccer’s fame is a university coach training program in Cologne. Long before Germany knew it was to host the 2006 World Cup, the country had another claim to soccer fame: its world renowned soccer coaching program, now finishing its 50th season. Indeed, the German Soccer Association’s decision just after World War II to offer a special training program for up-and-coming football coaches turned out to be a shrewd one. The legendary Sepp Herberger (photo, below), who led the German national team to win the World Cup in 1954, was the mastermind of the soccer coach training program. “The soccer coach training program started back in 1947 at our university,” said Walter Tokarski, director of the German Sport University in Cologne, adding that all the directors of the program were also successful teachers or even trained here themselves — people like Herberger, Hennes Weisweiler, Gero Bisanz and now Erich Rutemöller… But another reason for German soccer’s fame is a university coach training program in Cologne. Bahrain’s coach sees “realistic chance” to qualify
IranMania News – Apr 30, 2005

LONDON, April 30 (IranMania) – Bahrain’s German national football team coach Wolfgang Sidka said there is still a “realistic chance” to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, despite being grouped with Asian football powerhouses Iran and Japan. “I think we have a strong team in Bahrain and we have a realistic chance of qualifying. Perhaps not in the two automatic places but via the play-offs,” Sidka said Saturday in an interview with the online FIFA World Cup site. “I am convinced we’ll make it to Germany,” he added. World Cup talent pool has improved

The World Cup is a long-forgotten tournament that ended hours before the seemingly endless lockout began. So, the World Championships that began Saturday in Vienna, Austria, are the best that hockey fans will get this spring. If you are interested, the hockey might not be too bad. Because of the lockout, the pool of available players expanded greatly. Generally, it’s only players on nonplayoff teams who are available… The players want to go, and Bob Goodenow, the NHL Players Association executive director, has made that point known. But with one regular season already wiped out, it might not be wise for the NHL to shut down again, if only for a few weeks, to play in the Olympics. The 2006 Games are in Turin, Italy, Feb. Interest generally peaks around the league that time of year, and to shut it down for two weeks could cap the enthusiasm. The European site for the Olympics also brings into question time differences. Games in Italy will have to be shown earlier in the day than prime time in the United States.

Harrington closed with a 71 to finish in joint-ninth on eight under, while English duo Justin Rose and Brian Davis claimed a share of 17th on six under. That was one shot better than world number two and defending champion Vijay Singh.
