Chelsea and Liverpool scent glory
CNN International – May 3, 2005
Mourinho, who has never lost a semifinal, remains supremely confident, but tried to downplay his arrogant reputation. "I’m not selfish though. I’m not the man that some people think I am. Only my players really know what and who I am. "I would love to do it more for them than myself. Winning the Champions League is something special and because my players are special, I would love to see them do it. "I’ve tried to explain to them what it’s like to play in a UEFA competition final… "With Liverpool expected to exert early pressure in an attempt to break the goalless deadlock from the first leg, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will need to be on full alert. But the Czech international, who joined the Blues after their semifinal defeat to Monaco in the Champions League, says they will be totally focused despite clinching the Premiership title. Cech too, knows the feeling of semifinal failure, having been in his national team beaten by hosts Greece at that stage of Euro 2004. "We celebrated the title in the dressing-room but since then we have been thinking only about this game as we just need to take one more step," he declared. "Many of the players remember the feeling after the game against Monaco last season and they don’t want to repeat that. So we are ready and focused. "I was also very disappointed when we lost against Greece in the semifinal of Euro 2004.

The one certainty is that Beckham will not be fully satisfied with his career until he has a winner?s medal with England. Next year?s World Cup in Germany provides possibly the last chance for that, assuming England qualify. Beckham?s views have not changed since he spoke shortly before Euro 2004. ?I?ve been a lucky footballer who has managed so many achievements in the last 10 years,? he told reporters. ?The Treble success with United the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1999 was pretty amazing. That was a special time in my career. ?Scoring the last-minute goal against Greece at Old Trafford that took us to the 2002 World Cup and then the penalty winner against Argentina in the tournament were also big things for me,? he added.

Anfield and Gerrard in tune at last
Telegraph.co.uk – May 5, 2005
The following 90 minutes must have made up his mind. Having reached the Champions League final amid a raw sea of emotion, how could Steven Gerrard leave his beloved Liverpool behind?. “Yes,” Benitez said, “Chelsea have Lampard, Makelele, Tiago and Gudjohnsen. All fine players, some of the best in the world. But I have Steven Gerrard. He is better than the lot… Gerrard shook his head in weary disbelief. He quickly recovered his senses with a 10-yard sprint to draw a free-kickWithout wishing to try to elicit too much sympathy for a young, healthy, wealthy and enormously talented footballer, Gerrard must have endured a fairly difficult 12 months. First there were the non-stop advances from Chelsea during Euro 2004, attention that the player admitted put him off his football. Then, having finally committed to Liverpool after much soul-searching, stories linking him with the new Premiership champions wouldn’t go away. Perhaps they will now. The scenes at the end were incredible. Gerrard was last off the pitch having gone to all four sides in ecstatic celebration.

Sepeng, who won the silver medal at the Atlanta Olympics nine years ago, was tested out of season in his home town of Potchefstroom, north west of Johannesburg, in February. Sepeng, who was not available to comment, has until Monday to explain to the ASA how the substance came to be in his system and whether or not he wants his ?B? sample to be tested. Norandrosterone is the metabolite of the steroid nandrolone, which shows up in a urine sample. Dr Ismail Jakoet, a member of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) observer team to the 2001 World Athletics Championships, offered a glimmer of hope for the 30-year-old athlete. ?There have been hundreds of cases where athletes have escaped a ban because nandrolone has been found in contaminated supplements,? he told Reuters. reutersChelsea?s Lampard is writers? player of the year LONDON: England midfielder Frank Lampard has been voted Footballer of the Year by English soccer writers after guiding Chelsea to their first championship for 50 years… He is the second Chelsea player to win after Italy?s Gianfranco Zola in 1997. The prize had gone to Arsenal players for the previous three years Thierry Henry winning the last two and France team mate Robert Pires being chosen in 2002. The award by the Football Writers? Association also reflects Lampard?s services for England since winning a guaranteed starting slot in central midfield alongside Steven Gerrard shortly before Euro 2004. reutersFormer champ Rahman to face Barrett in heavyweight bout LAS VEGAS: Former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman will face Monte Barrett on July 23, with the winner taking on WBC champ Vitali Klitschko later this year. But such was the case when Jurgen Klinsmann, the German national team coach, trotted around Home Depot Center’s pitch during the Galaxy’s Alumni match on April 30. It was like old times for Klinsmann, one of the all-time greats. Klinsmann, who starred at Stuttgart, Inter, Tottenham and Bayern Munich, scored two goals, should have had a third, and led his team to victory. And all that just hours after arriving from Frankfurt… After disappointing Euro 92 and World Cup 94 efforts, Germany won Euro 96 but was routed by Croatia in the World Cup 98 quarterfinals. Euro 2000 was a disaster as the club failed to get out of the first round. Germany seemed to turn the corner at World Cup 2002 but followed that tournament up with a disappointing Euro 2004 campaign, again failing to advance past the group stage. But things are looking up with Klinsmann at the helm. "We are very happy with the way things are proceeding at the moment," he said. "The team has done extremely well since we took over in terms of commitment in terms of playing style. We introduced a very aggressive and attacking style to the squad and they took that very well.

Don’t take away more of the Cup’s magic
Telegraph.co.uk – May 3, 2005
Now, having rejected the idea of moving next year’s final to Wednesday night, which would have ruined the jamboree Wembley homecoming – presumably proposed by the FA representative for Merrie England, one Private Baldrick – they have decided that clubs involved in Europe will not face replays for fifth and sixth-round ties. And all this so that England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson can have four weeks at the end of the season to make the Neville brothers into World Cup-winning footballers. It is highly revealing that FA rules already allow clubs drawn against one another to agree to play just one game to a finish, assuming the governing body’s sanction. But in what other sport would it be legal for different competitors to play to different rules? Can you imagine the Williams sisters being forced to play five-set matches at Wimbledon, while all the rest played three? Tiger Woods having to play 90 holes per tournament? Michael Schumacher required to drive 15 more laps than his Formula One rivals? Now there is a germ of an idea… Of course, if Arsenal draw Manchester United or Chelsea away in next season’s quarter-finals, they could well fall foul of it. It would make more sense if the break really would make any difference to England’s chances in next year’s World Cup. But excepting Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, who played in the FA Cup final for Manchester United, the players all had a four-week break before Euro 2004. And how did Eriksson fill the spare weeks? With a meaningless tournament against Iceland and Japan. And what is he going to do with the precious seven days stolen from FA Cup underdogs? Give his players a week off.

?I don?t think I?ve seen a player in my life improve so much as I have with Frank Lampard,? England and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen said last month. Azerbaijan coach Carlos Alberto, Brazil?s 1970 World Cup-winning captain, was moved to label him one of the best midfielders in the world after England?s 2-0 win over his side in March. Once a fringe player, Lampard has been established alongside Steven Gerrard in England?s central midfield since Euro 2004, where he scored three goals in four games. The good news for Chelsea is that having signed a new five-year contract in 2004, Lampard will be part of the Stamford Bridge revolution for years to come. ?We?re all hungry for more success and, with the squad we now have at Stamford Bridge, we?re not going to settle for one title,? he said. Lampard says he thrives on the pressure generated by his manager Jose Mourinho. ?It?s very prestigious,? Lampard told reporters at the club?s Cobham training ground yesterday… Once a fringe player, Lampard has been established alongside Steven Gerrard in England?s central midfield since Euro 2004, where he scored three goals in four games. Liverpool are likely to be fined as they are held responsible for pitch security by Uefa. The two people, who were due before Liverpool magistrates on Wednesday, are well-known in Spain for their pitch invasions and have their own website. During Euro 2004, one member ran onto the pitch when Portugal were playing and hurled a Barcelona banner at the club’s former player Luis Figo. Like Figo, Mourinho was once a Barcelona favourite. But he has become a hate figure for fans following the controversy surrounding Chelsea’s games against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League.
