BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Man Utd | Rooney’s lesson from…
BBC News – May 18, 2005
How quickly times change. Rooney came back from Euro 2004 pining for success at club level to match his impact on the international scene and decided he would have to leave Everton to make his dreams come true. It is unlikely that on 31 August, when he completed his Old Trafford switch, he would have placed a bet on his old club finishing just one league place behind his new employees at the end of the Premiership season. And this is where Rooney’s immediate problem lies: to justify leaving his beloved Everton at the tender age of 19 he needs to quickly achieve things that would not have been possible at Goodison Park. Joining Chelsea would have already won him the Carling Cup and the Premiership title; even moving to the Red side of Liverpool would have booked him a place in the showpiece final of the Champions League. So Saturday is a hugely important day in the young life of Wayne Rooney.

1, winning 11 times in 2004, the best performance in almost 20 years. Laureus World Sports Academy member tennis legend Boris Becker, himself a multi-Grand Slam winner, said: ?It was a phenomenal year for Roger Federer. He is not only a skilful player, but he is wonderful to watch. In 2004 he seemed to be able to win the un-winnable points and out-think his opponents. He served up superb, winning tennis throughout the year and at 24 it leaves us all wondering what he can achieve in the future. ?

At 34 and the oldest woman in the field, Kelly Holmes (Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year), after a career dogged by injuries and disappointments, won the 800M and 1,500M Olympic gold medals in Athens, a feat only ever achieved by two women before. It was one of the greatest achievements in Olympic history, made even more satisfying for Holmes who has suffered an agonising series of near-misses in her career… Greece (Laureus World Team of the Year) arrived in Portugal for the 2004 European Championship as 150-1 outsiders who had never won a major tournament. Four weeks later the Greece national team had become legendary figures in Greek football history after becoming surprise winners. Angelos Charisteas scored the winning goal in the 1-0 Euro 2004 final victory against hosts Portugal, while German Otto Rehhagel, aged 65, proved a tactical genius as Greek coach. Laureus World Sports Academy member Bobby Charlton, a member of the England World Cup winning side in 1966, said: ?Greece?s victory was a classic team performance. They had excellent tactics, each member of the team knew what they had to do and they were not overawed by the reputation of some of the other teams they had to play. Winning Euro 2004 will be a watershed for football in the country. ?

The success of Liu Xiang (Laureus World Newcomer of the Year) in becoming the first Chinese man to win a track athletics gold medal in Olympic history when he won the 110M hurdles in Athens caused sports hysteria in China.

Euro 2004 riots: Lessons to learn
Croydon Guardian – May 19, 2005
A cross-party committee of councillors produced the recommendations after looking into the violent disorder in the town centre following two Euro 2004 matches. Rioting followed England’s defeat against France on June 13 and again when the team

According to the committee’s chairman, Councillor Timothy Godfrey, a recurrence could be prevented by more police in the town and by pubs not serving drunk customers. Three years after Feyenoord won the Uefa Cup in their own De Kuip Stadium, Sporting will bid to match the feat at their Jose Alvalade ground in Lisbon. “Portugal were favourites to beat Greece (on home soil) in Euro 2004 and look what happened,” said Peseiro. “You can’t take anything for granted. ”

Sporting’s only European trophy was the 1963-1964 Cup Winners’ Cup when they beat Hungary’s MTK Budapest. Their performances in this season’s competition, in which they are averaging more than two goals a game, make them favourites for the trophy and they boast a matchwinner in Liedson.

Channel 4 looks to spend £188m war chest
Guardian Unlimited – May 18, 2005
3m in cash and no current asset investments. Its chief executive, Andy Duncan, said the broadcaster was looking to use some of the money to make “sensible, smart investments” over the next couple of years, following the acquisition of a 51% stake in digital radio station Oneword earlier this year. Mr Duncan would not comment further on possible acquisition targets. However, Channel 4 is likely to be looking at areas that would boost its positioning as a strong youth brand, such as new media and music. Earlier this month it launched a new music website, Channel4. And the sixth series of Big Brother next week will herald the most ambitious use yet of new broadcast platforms such as 3G… He said the channel has grown its advertising revenue by around 15% year-on-year in the first three months of 2005. But in the second quarter the total TV advertising market had declined by around 5%, with Channel 4 likely to report a smaller year-on-year decrease than that for the period. Mr Duncan highlighted factors including the early Easter, which fell in March this year, the general election and the fact that comparisons with the second quarter of last year had to take into account the Euro 2004 football tournament in June. “But [the decline in the TV ad market] also reflects growing economic unease. When we look at the second half of the year, most people think its going to be flat. But we are looking at slight growth [for Channel 4],” he said. Mr Barnes added: “I’ve never seen the market rise so quickly and fall so quickly.

Germany recall Hamann and Deisler
CNN – May 18, 2005
Deisler last played for Germany in the 2-0 victory over Iran in October. However, he then flew back from Italy ahead of Bayern Munich’s match against Juventus, and returned to the clinic where he had previously been treated for depression. He has not been in the frame for the national team since and has generally been left out of Bayern’s starting line-up. Hamann’s last international match was Germany’s 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic in Euro 2004 in June, which resulted in their exit from the competition. He has not featured in any of Klinsmann’s squads. However, the 31-year-old midfielder has been instrumental in Liverpool’s passage to the final of the Champions League, notably with a battling performance in the 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the second leg of the semi-final. "He immediately accepted our initial decision to try out younger players and has also been exemplary for Liverpool," Klinsmann said… However, he then flew back from Italy ahead of Bayern Munich’s match against Juventus, and returned to the clinic where he had previously been treated for depression. In Sports, Red Is Winning Color, Study Says
National Geographic – May 18, 2005
“Where there was a large point difference—presumably because one contestant was far superior to the other—color had no effect on the outcome,” Barton said. “Where there was a small point difference, the effect of color was sufficient to tip the balance. In equally matched bouts, the preponderance of red wins was great enough that it could not be attributed to chance, the anthropologists say. Hill and Barton found similar results in a review of the colors worn at the Euro 2004 international soccer tournament. Their report will be published in tomorrow’s issue of the journal Nature. Joanna Setchell, a primate researcher at the University of Cambridge in England, has found similar results in nature. Wearing red helps you win
Guardian Unlimited – May 19, 2005
The same was true across the weight classes of all sports: 19 out of 29 had more red winners than blue. They reasoned that the colour only made a difference when the contestants were evenly matched. Then they looked at the Euro 2004 soccer tournament, in which teams wore shirts of different colours in different matches. Once again, it seemed that teams played better wearing red rather than white. There had been instances where teams had changed their shirts and their fortunes. Liverpool, for instance, adopted red under the reign of the legendary manager Bill Shankly. “Obviously, they have been a relatively successful team since that date,” Mr Hill said… If Mr Hill were a betting man, he said, that is where he would put his money. “With all these things, the overriding factor that influences the outcome of a sporting contest is skill. If the All Blacks continue to turn out such talented rugby players, then it doesn’t matter if you put on a red shirt or not. You have to match them in skill first before the red starts to give you an advantage.

UEFA Cup: Heads outwit hearts in Lisbon

Their system, patience and a disciplined gameplan triumphed where Sporting – not short on courage, energy or enterprise – fell away. Pragmatism allied to slick and sharp finishing on the break overcame the orthodoxy of 4-4-2 and a team backed by the vast majority of the home crowd, and fuelled by passion rather than knowledge. Greater threat
Yet, it had been hard not to feel sympathy for CSKA coach Valeriy Gazzaev as he ushered his players down the tunnel at half-time when they trailed 1-0 and the Portuguese were singing. His well-drilled team, in a compact 4-3-1-2 formation, had followed their instructions almost perfectly, holding Sporting at bay in the opening 20 minutes to silence the partisan home crowd, before moving forward with greater threat. Memories of Greece wrecking Portugal’s dream last summer were revived at times as the Russian side marched forward but it was the ‘home’ team, with their offensive 4-4-2 system, who enjoyed most of the possession and most of the shots on goal – although they rarely provided evidence of their ability to win. Flying start
CSKA, as they had promised, were not in Lisbon to make up the numbers. Any side that had conceded only four goals in their previous eight UEFA Cup contests and was playing a record-equalling 19th European tie of the season deserved respect.

William Hill set to buy Stanley
International Herald Tribune – May 17, 2005
William Hill said it would not proceed with plans to return £453 million to shareholders as a result of the acquisition. It had planned to give money to investors after being deterred from expanding into the British casino industry when the government scaled back proposed changes to gambling laws. Shares of William Hill dropped as much as 18 pence, or 3. 4 percent, to 507 pence in London and was quoted 2. 4 percent lower in midday trading… The Stanley business made earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of £37. 2 million in the year ended May 2, 2004, and profit in the year ended this month was probably "marginally lower" because of unfavorable horse-racing and sports results, the company said. Full-year profit at William Hill "will be influenced by the degree to which sporting results normalize in the coming months," according to the company, which won £11 million from bets on the Euro 2004 soccer tournament last summer. Stanley, Britain's largest casino operator, said the sale would leave it with surplus cash of about £300 million.

Wearing Red Is a Recipe for Winning, British Anthropologists Find
Washington Post – May 19, 2005
Often it is sexually selected so that scarlet markings signal male dominance. Just think of the red stripes on the scowling face of the male mandrill, Africa’s largest monkey. But red is not exclusively a male trait. The female black widow spider is venomous and displays a menacing red dot on her abdomen. Similarly, the color’s effect also may subconsciously intimidate opponents in athletic contests, especially when the athletes are equal in skill and strength, the researchers suggest. In their survey, the anthropologists analyzed the results of four one-on-one contact sports at the Summer Games: boxing, taekwondo, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling. In those events, the athletes were randomly assigned red protective gear and other sportswear… The effect was the same regardless of weight classes, too: 19 of 29 classes had more red winners, and only four rounds had more blue winners. The red effect also might come into play in team sports. A preliminary analysis of the Euro 2004 soccer tournament found that five teams scored more goals and won more often when they wore shirts that were predominantly red, as opposed to blue or white jerseys. — From News Services.

A Science To Winning? Wear Red
CBS News – May 18, 2005
Just think of the red stripes on the scowling face of the male Mandrill, Africa’s largest monkey species. But red is not exclusively a male trait. It’s the female black widow spider that is venomous and displays a menacing red dot on her abdomen. Similarly, the color’s effect also may subconsciously intimidate opponents in athletic contests, especially when the athletes are equal in skill and strength, the researchers suggest. Athletes wearing red gear won more often in 16 of 21 rounds of competition in all four events… The effect was the same regardless of weight classes, too: 19 of 29 classes had more red winners, and only four rounds had more blue winners. They found that five teams scored more goals and won more often when they wore shirts that were predominantly red, as opposed to blue or white jerseys. Scientists don’t precisely known how wearing red might give athletes an advantage. But the color delivers implicit messages of vigor and danger. When people get angry, their faces turn red.

Red shirts ‘give teams an advantage’
Life Style Extra – May 18, 2005
Dr Hill and Dr Barton said: “Red coloration is a sexually selected, testosterone-dependent signal of male quality in a variety of animals and in some non-human species a male?s dominance can be experimentally increased by attaching artificial red stimuli. “Here we show a similar effect can influence the outcome of physical contests in humans ? across a range of sports we find wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning. “These results indicate not only that sexual selection may have influenced the evolution of human response to colours but also that the colour of sportswear needs to be taken into account to ensure a level playing field in sport. “They said although other colours are also present in animal displays it’s specifically the presence and intensity of red coloration that correlates with male dominance and testosterone levels. In humans anger is associated with a reddening of the skin due to increased blood flow whereas fear is associated with increased pallor in similarly threatening situations. Hence increased redness during aggressive interactions may reflect relative dominance. The researchers said in the 2004 Olympic Games study if colour had no effect on the outcome of contests the number of winners wearing red should be statistically indistinguishable from the number of winners wearing blue… “That is, wearing red presumably tips the balance between losing and winning only when other factors are fairly equal. “We found this is indeed the case -only in contests between individuals of similar ability were there significantlymore red than blue winners with the red advantage seeming to decline as asymmetries in competitive ability increase. “A preliminary analysis of the results of the Euro 2004 international soccer tournament, in which teams wore shirts of different colours in different matches, suggests wearing red may also bestow an advantage in team sports and when opponents wear colours other than blue. The researchers said: “We compared the performance of five teams that wore a predominantly red shirt against their performance when wearing a different shirt colour – four played their other matches in white, one in blue. “We found that all five had better results when playing in red – largely as a result of scoring more goals. Hence, colour of sportswear may affect outcomes in a wide variety of sporting contexts. “Dr Hill said England did better in all the matches in which they wore their second choice strip of red shirts – and he was not surprised.

Wearing red gives opponents blues
Telegraph.co.uk – May 19, 2005
To study whether red affected sporting prowess, Russell Hill and Robert Barton studied four one-on-one disciplines in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games – boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling – in which combatants were randomly assigned either red or blue clothing or body protectors. Those wearing red, but otherwise matched in ability to their blue opponents, were more likely to win, they report today in the journal Nature. A preliminary analysis of the Euro 2004 football competition suggests that red can influence team sports, too. Five teams were found to play better when they wore red, scoring more goals. Mr Hill said there was plenty of anecdotal evidence of this effect. “We can obviously also point to the fact that post-war red teams – Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool – have dominated the English football scene. “He also cited the Telegraph’s “wonderful description of Bill Shankly’s words after Liverpool wore red for the first time in the European Cup”, written by Henry Winter:”That Anderlecht tie witnessed further evidence of Shankly’s awareness that footballers are not machines, but human beings susceptible to positive and negative influences… Mr Hill said there was plenty of anecdotal evidence of this effect. “We can obviously also point to the fact that post-war red teams – Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool – have dominated the English football scene. “He also cited the Telegraph’s “wonderful description of Bill Shankly’s words after Liverpool wore red for the first time in the European Cup”, written by Henry Winter:”That Anderlecht tie witnessed further evidence of Shankly’s awareness that footballers are not machines, but human beings susceptible to positive and negative influences. U. wins all about the red?

There also was a trip to the Fiesta Bowl, and at least one — and maybe two — No. If two British scientists are right, the U. ‘s winning seasons may not be due to skill or even luck. It’s all about the color of their uniforms. Yep, you read that right. Forget blood, sweat and tears… In those events, the athletes were randomly assigned red protective gear and other sportswear. It’s almost the end of the season and I just want to keep playing and get as many appearances as possible. “Edman arrived at the Lane in the summer with high hopes. He had a good Euro 2004 with Sweden in Portugal and then played a big part in Tottenham’s sound start to the Premiership. However, in the win at Everton in October, Edman was involved in a nasty clash of heads with David Weir, which resulted in concussion and this kept him out of action for five weeks. Then, having made his comeback against Aston Villa he picked up an ankle injury and was sidelined until Boxing Day. “It was very disappointing, especially after the good start to the season we had,” added Edman. “But the thing with head injuries of that type is that everybody reacts differently.
