Turks play Greeks in fiery confrontation
Newsweek – Jun 3, 2005
That’s not all: Saturday’s matchup, one of many qualifiers this weekend, features bitter rivals Turkey and Greece. Qualifying for the 2006 tournament in Germany has reached the halfway stage. There’s a chance two-time champion Argentina will be the first team to join the host in the field within the next few days. The Turks and Greeks, however, are chasing surprise group leader Ukraine in European Group 2… A self-declared Turkish Cypriot republic was established in the north in 1983, but only Turkey recognizes the breakaway state. Because of the animosity between the nations, it’s unlikely many Greek fans will make the short journey. Greece, which won the Euro 2004 title after never winning a game at a major championship, most likely will face the “Welcome to Hell” greetings given to visiting teams by Turkish fans. “We expect to play in a fanatical atmosphere,” Greek striker Zissis Vryzas said. “We hope the Turkish fans will support their team — but nothing more. ”Team members from both countries appeared in a TV ad, shown in Greece and Turkey, urging fans to keep the peace. “Sport unites countries,” Greek midfielder Stelios Giannakopoulos says in the ad.

Mosimane ‘humbled’ by award
Independent Online – Jun 3, 2005
United finished fourth in the league standings and were only recently ousted from the prestigious African Confederations Cup competition by Nigeria’s Dolphins FC. My boys were able to balance themselves throughout the season’Let’s start there. Do you disagree that Pirates had played the most entertaining soccer which was the main criteria for the award?

That may have been so but they won nothing. In my opinion, my boys were able to balance themselves throughout the season. We were able to switch to whatever soccer it took to win matches and the trophies… We are too diverse a football culture to want to force a certain style of play down everyone’s throats. You spent many years playing in Greece. Is there a less on for SA soccer in the way they exceeded all expectations to win Euro 2004?

That was a tremendous achievement. I would never have thought Greek soccer would progress that far. But a possible answer to this question is the fact that they have so many players playing for top clubs around Europe. These guys come back a lot more mature and better skilled for national duty and when you add a good coach, you give yourself every chance of winning things. Why has this not worked for Bafana? We too have a number of players in top overseas clubs and a top coach, but still seem to struggle for consistency.

Before the game..

You won’t see either side going for the jugular. ‘ Carlo Ancelotti ‘I’ll tell you what we should not do, and that is to worry about Liverpool. They are such a defensive team. We’re not the kind of team that will calculate how to win: we believe in attacking properly, with clever ideas and concepts. ‘ Article continues… Manchester United 6 Fenerbahce 2 28 September 2004 Wayne Rooney’s brilliant debut for his new club andhis first game back after a broken metatarsal – sustained at Euro 2004 – that kept him out of action for three months. His final strike of his hat-trick was the best, technically the swooping free-kick was stunning, but it was the way the 18-year-old (right) dominated proceedings that made his £27m fee look money well spent. Liverpool 3 Olympiakos 1 8 December 2004 The result that started it all for Liverpool. The final game in the group stage and one the Anfield side had to win by two clear goals. Trailing at half-time to a Rivaldo free-kick, the Reds, not for the last time this campaign, looked to be going out.

Awful in April, Liverpool rolled over to Crystal Palace. Now they are…
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – May 29, 2005
Fatigue had a part in the outcome of Wednesday and if it was Liverpool, with players requiring treatment for cramp, who had the most obvious symptoms once extra-time approached, it was Milan whom fatigue had been stalking in the weeks up to the final. By the first hours of Thursday, they had nothing from their season except the acknowledgement of most independent observers that they have played the best football most often and did so for all but a segment of the 120 minutes in Istanbul. But since when did that count for much in international tournaments? Not last summer, when Greece won Euro 2004 while a series of favoured nations complained of tiredness. The Liverpool of 2005, and the Porto of 2004, are being classed with Greece for being outsiders and for being managed by career coaches, men without particular pedigree from their playing careers. Greece’s head coach, Otto Rehhagel, used to be a painter and decorator; Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho called time young on their ambitions as players and while it would be trite to suggest this automatically gives them their special attention to detail, their flair for organisation, they are qualities they share. Benitez always has a plan B. It was conspicuous during his management of Valencia and he was obliged to make alterations on Wednesday after the failure of Harry Kewell to make an impression, the Australian’s subsequent injury and the freedom Liverpool had allowed Kaka and Andrea Pirlo.

Arsenal thwarted as Edu opts for move to Spain
Telegraph.co.uk – May 31, 2005
Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has pulled out of Germany’s squad for the Confederations Cup because of a stress fracture in his right foot. Hamann, an influential substitute when Liverpool won the Champions League last week, has not played for Germany since Euro 2004. Coach Jürgen Klinsmann recalled Hamann for a series of friendlies and the Confederations Cup, which runs from June 15 to 29. “Hamann’s loss is a big blow to us,” said Klinsmann, who is using the summer games to prepare for the 2006 World Cup, which Germany host. “He would have been a perfect fit in terms of our philosophy, but it’s better that it happens now than in a year’s time. “Southampton are hoping to sign Dennis Wise, who left his position as player-manager at Millwall earlier this month.

SMG: no signs of advertising slump
Guardian Unlimited – Jun 3, 2005
He said a strong first quarter had been followed by a “quieter” period between April and June, but that was down to a number of factors the company had been able to predict. Media companies have been reporting slower trading because of the early Easter, which sucked revenues into March, and last month’s general election, which curbed government advertising spending. And this month was always expected to be down because the Euro 2004 football tournament this time last year had such a positive impact. But Mr Masters admitted current uncertainty reflected other factors: “There is undoubtedly more caution on the part of advertisers due to the slowdown in consumer spending. “This has led to the market becoming more short term but, as yet, we have not seen evidence of a major downturn in advertising spending. “Our businesses continue to see growth and we remain cautiously optimistic that we will achieve our current expectations for the group in 2005. “Shares in SMG – which also owns Pearl and Dean cinema advertising and the outdoor business Primesight – were up by 1… And this month was always expected to be down because the Euro 2004 football tournament this time last year had such a positive impact. Celtic win 33rd Scottish Cup | FOOTBALL | SPORT | tvnz.co.nz
TVNZ – May 29, 2005
Appearing in their 52nd final, against a team they had beaten intheir last 21 meetings, the 1-10 favourites and Cup holdersdominated throughout. However, their only goal came after 11 minutes when AlanThompson hit a low free kick that skidded in via a defender’s shinat the near post. Celtic should have scored more, not least five minutes from timewhen Chris Sutton spooned a penalty over the bar after slipping ashe struck the ball. Dundee United barely managed to create a chance but almost tookthe match into extra time when Alan Archibald smacked a 25-metreshot against the bar in the fourth minute of added time. Celtic blew the league championship in the last five minutes oftheir last game six days ago as they lost 2-1 to Motherwell, handing Rangers the title, and announced on Wednesday that theirinspirational manager O’Neil is to stand down. O’Neill, who is leaving to look after his ill wife, was sent upby the players to lift the trophy, marking a great end to amemorable five-year spell in charge of the Glasgow club. “We could have been out of sight just like last week againstMotherwell but we weren’t and they hit the bar at the end,” O’Neillsaid… Once Thompson’s free kick squirmed in – through the legs of BoboBalde and off the shin of 17-year-old Gary Kenneth – the green-cladfans sat back to await the goal rush. On-loan Craig Bellamy was running riot, with front men ChrisSutton and John Hartson a constant threat, but the chances usuallyarrived under pressure and United held out. When Bellamy was brought down by Kenneth it seemed all over, only for Sutton to provide memories of England’s David Beckham inEuro 2004 with his embarrassing slip. United, seeking only their second success in the competitionfollowing their win in 1994, took heart and produced their besteffort with Archibald’s late pile driver. It would have been too cruel for Celtic after last week’straumatic events and justice was done when O’Neill lifted thetrophy to deafening roars around Hampden Park.

Totti agrees Roma deal extension
CNN International – May 31, 2005
Totti, whose original contract was due to expire in June 2006, has been repeatedly linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid. He will give a press conference at Roma’s Trigoria training ground on Wednesday. Earlier in the season, Totti had threatened to leave Roma if the board’s ambition did not match his own. Yet despite finishing eighth in the league, a massive 41 points behind champions Juventus, the Italy international has decided to stay loyal to the ‘Giallorossi’. The contract gives Roma control of Totti’s image rights, while he is guaranteed a role within the club once he retires. Totti, who received a three-match ban at Euro 2004 for spitting in the face of Danish defender Christian Poulsen, has played for Roma for 13 seasons and helped them to the league title in 2001. Last month he received a five-game domestic suspension for lashing out at Siena defender Francesco Colonnese… Yet despite finishing eighth in the league, a massive 41 points behind champions Juventus, the Italy international has decided to stay loyal to the ‘Giallorossi’. He returned for Roma’s last league game of the season, a 0-0 draw at home to Chievo last Sunday. Marcello Lippi left Totti out of the Italy squad for next Saturday’s 2006 World Cup qualifier against Norway for what the Italy coach described as "technical reasons".

Councillors battle to raise £25 gift limit
ic Birmingham.co.uk – May 30, 2005
Sir Albert Bore, Labour group leader, was the leader of Birmingham City Council until the end of June 2004. When he was heading the council he regularly received scores of invitations to receptions, dinners and other functions. In one week in June last year, Sir Albert (Ladywood) declined invitations to a champagne reception at the Hilton Metropole, a screening of a Euro 2004 game at the Hotel Du Vin, an investment property dinner at Grosvenor House in London, lunch at the Botanical Gardens and a oneday international cricket match at Edgbaston. Sir Albert said: “The £25 limit is ludicrously low and it should be raised. “It takes so much time to sort out what is more than £25 that I just put down everything. ” When he became council leader on June 29 2004, Mike Whitby was unprepared for the mass of invitations to functions that would come his way. Among the invitations turned down by the council leader were tickets for the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Gymnastics World Cup Final.

Valencia offer Kluivert another chance

He signed for Newcastle last July when former Barcelona bossBobby Robson was still in charge at St James’ Park but hisseason was blighted by injury and inconsistent performances. Kluivert’s best displays came in the FA Cup where he scoredthe goals that knocked out Chelsea in the fifth round andTottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals. He has scored 40 times in 79 internationals but wasoverlooked for Euro 2004 and has not represented his countryunder new coach Marco van Basten. Your views on this story?.

Winners wear red
Jamaica Gleaner – May 31, 2005
Often it is sexually selected so that scarlet markings signal male dominance. Just think of the red stripes on the scowling face of the male Mandrill, Africa’s largest monkey species. But red is not exclusively a male trait. It’s the female black widow spider that is venomous and displays a menacing red dot on her abdomen. Similarly, the colour’s effect also may subconsciously intimidate opponents in athletic contests, especially when the athletes are equal in skill and strength, the researchers suggest. MORE RED WINNERS

In their survey, the anthropologists analysed the results of four combat sports at the summer games: boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling. In those events, the athletes were randomly assigned red protective gear and other sportswear… The effect was the same regardless of weight classes, too: 19 of 29 classes had more red winners, and only four rounds had more blue winners. The red effect also might come into play in team sports. The anthropologists made a preliminary analysis of the Euro 2004 international soccer tournament, in which teams wore jerseys of different colours in different matches. They found that five teams scored more goals and won more often when they wore shirts that were predominantly red, as opposed to blue or white jerseys. Scientists don’t precisely know how wearing red might give athletes an advantage. But the colour delivers implicit messages of vigour and danger. When people get angry, their faces turn red.

Judge’s son gets 27 months for ‘terrifying’ football riot
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 1, 2005
Matthew Carroll, 19, was one of 400 people who went on a “violent and terrifying rampage” in Croydon, south London, after England was knocked out of the Euro 2004 football tournament by host nation Portugal last June. Buses and cars were attacked, and a tram had its windows smashed, showering glass on passengers inside. Bottles, glasses and bricks were thrown at police officers, seriously injuring two… CCTV showed the teenager, whose father, Michael Carroll, sits at Woolwich Crown Court in south London, shouting abuse and throwing a missile at police. He also hurled a bin at a shop window and repeatedly kicked two parked mopeds, injuring a foot, which needed hospital treatment. Sentencing him to 27 months in a young offenders’ institution, Judge Cedric Joseph said the punishment, which included a six-year ban from attending football matches or watching them in licensed premises, reflected sentencing guidelines which stated that not only the actions of the individual but also of the mob as a whole should be taken into account. He said the student, who lives with his parents in Addiscombe, south London, and had no previous convictions, was so intoxicated he had no memory of the evening after the match had reached its half-time break. He called for a community sentence as his father’s profession meant “life for him will be particularly difficult in detention”.
