Battle on for World Cup places
TVNZ – Jun 7, 2005
Any hopes Denmark entertain of securing the second spot lie inbeating Albania at home, but the visitors are no pushovers andstill have hopes themselves of taking second. Group One is a tight affair between perennial rivals TheNetherlands and the Czech Republic, with the Dutch holding aone-point advantage over the Euro 2004 semi-finalists. The Czechs host Macedonia, which should see them take threepoints while the Dutch – impressive 2-0 winners over Romania at theweekend – travel to what on paper looks a relatively easy task asthe Finns have not won a competitive match since last October. Romania will look to stay within touching distance of secondplace by beating Armenia at home, anything less and they can startbooking their summer holidays for next year. Group Four could be labelled the one that nobody wants to winwith the astonishing amount of draws between the leadingprotagonists. Ireland will seek to put their latest one – 2-2 at home to Israelafter leading 2-0 on Sunday – behind them when they travel to grouptailenders The Faroe Islands. Their manager Brian Kerr admits it is up to him to raise hissquad’s morale following their morale-sapping result at theweekend.

FIFA World Cup – Fixtures & Results – Match specific
uefa.comUEFA.com – Jun 4, 2005
Crucial tiePortugal take on Slovakia in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estádio da Luz on Saturday evening, and victory against the joint Group 3 leaders will put Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side in pole position for a place in Germany next summer. Figo retired from international football last year after Portugal’s defeat in the final of UEFA EURO 2004™, but now that he has gone back on that decision, Deco is sure Portugal will feel the benefits. “He is a great player who has a lot to give to the Portuguese team in every respect,” the coach said… ”
‘Our way’Portugal were at their imperious best during their last home qualifier in October when they routed Russia 7-1. They have scored 21 goals in their six matches and Slovakia striker Marek Mintál intimated that a safety-first approach may be the best policy for his side in Lisbon. “We have not forgotten the way Russia tried to play in Lisbon, or the result,” Mintál said. “It is not possible to play an open game against them, we will try to do it our way. ”
Injury concernsGalis has had injury problems to contend with this week; defenders Roman Kratochvíl and Jozef Valachovič dropping out, with midfielder Dušan Sninský and forward Andrej Porázik coming in.

A kick off the old starting block
The Age – Jun 7, 2005
This is the reason why the Commonwealth Games is important. Itgives young athletes a chance to strut their stuff before having acrack at the Olympic trials. This is particularly important forAustralia, as we are not part of a natural sports bloc, in the sameway that we are not in a natural trading bloc. While othercountries can compete in the European Championships, the AsianGames, the Pan American Games and the rest, Australia only has theCommonwealth Games to blood our athletics stars of the future. But there are some lessons in the sports scene for the businessworld too. In sport as in business, the Commonwealth Games andother major events are a chance to raise the profile of Australia’sexporting stars of the future too. For most companies starting off,it is hard to get their brand known in a competitive world -especially when Australia is geographically so far away from manymajor markets… In engineering services,Sinclair Knight Merz, a big winner from Sydney 2000, was involvedin the design and engineering of the roofs for the main AthensOlympic stadium and velodrome, plus the pedestrian and transportinterchange in the OAKA precinct. And on the design side, ConceptSports provided the merchandise for Athens 2004. TheMelbourne-based company, which doubled full-time staff numbers inthe lead-up to Athens, has also supplied merchandise for RugbyWorld Cup 2003 and football’s Euro 2004 in Portugal, and isexpected to bid for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. TO HELP these companies and many others to pursue their globaldreams, Austrade and its partners in the federal and Victoriangovernments have set up Business Club Australia to take advantageof the large number of business people coming to Melbourne for theCommonwealth Games. The BCA concept was originally used at the Sydney Olympics to”matchmake” Australian suppliers and overseas buyers, distributorsand potential joint-venture partners. A similar concept was usedfor the Rugby World Cup 2003, given the strong corporate andprofessional networks that exist in rugby union worldwide. The BCAwill help Australian business newcomers launch their own versionsof global success – their industry equivalent of winning a goldmedal.

Ukraine on the verge of World Cup spot
Independent Online – Jun 9, 2005
However, it was only three late goals including one by veteran Philippe Cocu that ensured victory after Ruud van Nistelrooy had given them a 37th minute lead. Defeat left the hosts without a competitive victory since October 2004. ‘We showed a great deal of resilience’However the Dutch will not be able to rest easy as their perennial rivals the Czech Republic racked up another massive win with a 6-1 thrashing of Macedonia, and that after they had gone behind to the visitors. Four goals from giant striker Jan Koller formed the backbone to their victory while Liverpool’s wantaway striker Milan Baros got one – in front of French champions Lyon coach Gerard Houllier who wants him to sign for them – as the Euro 2004 semifinalists took their tally to 14 in two matches having seen off Andorra 8-1 last Saturday. Barring slip-ups by either side the crucial match will come on October 8 when the Czechs host the Dutch in what should prove to be one of the matches of the qualifying process. Romania just about kept in touch of the leading two by winning 3-0 at home to Armenia but are still five points adrift of the Czechs and have played a game more than both the other sides. British Isles sides had differing nights with the Republic of Ireland gaining a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands which nevertheless sent them top of Group 4, a point ahead of Switzerland, who have a game in hand… Defeat left the hosts without a competitive victory since October 2004. ‘We showed a great deal of resilience’However the Dutch will not be able to rest easy as their perennial rivals the Czech Republic racked up another massive win with a 6-1 thrashing of Macedonia, and that after they had gone behind to the visitors. St George flags declared illegal
BBC News – Jun 6, 2005
The Griffin family, of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, are football fans and decided to start flying two flags for Euro 2004. Now they want to keep the flags flying, but the city council says they are in breach of national regulations. Tina Griffin said the council reaction was “very bizarre” and they would be fighting to keep flying the flags… “The council has never told me what it is I am advertising and clearly I would like to know what that is. ”

Mrs Griffin added a petition in the street showed the majority of people were either not bothered by the flags of St George, the patron saint of England, or had not realised they were there. A council spokesman said they were not being petty about the flags but were simply enforcing national regulations. The authority was prepared to allow Mrs Griffin to fly one flag, but she needs special permission to permanently fly both and to apply for that she would need to pay a ?265 fee. Mrs Griffin is due to meet officials later this week to try to sort out a compromise.

Israel fight back for Dublin draw
CNN International – Jun 4, 2005
Israel appeared intent on shutting the game down and frustrate their opponents with goalkeeper Dudu Awate taking his time after several goalmouth incidents in which he claimed to have been hurt before getting a yellow card at the end. "We did enough to win this match but we just didn’t win it," said Ireland manager Brian Kerr. "I have never seen a team have so much domination and not manage to score. "Defender Ian Harte opened the scoring for Ireland in the sixth minute after Awate palmed his high free kick onto the bar and down into the back of the net. Clearly rattled, Israel paid the price for some sloppy defence just five minutes later, allowing Robbie Keane to take a long, unobstructed shot from Tottenham Hotspur team mate Andy Reid’s fine head-high ball down the middle for Ireland’s second. Keane had one last, offside stab at goal after picking up a rebound from Clinton Morrison before coming off in the 27th minute with a sore shoulder. Kerr said it made Keane’s place in the squad to face the Faroe Islands on Wednesday uncertain… The Swiss took a deserved lead through Wicky but then failed to convert a string of chances and the Faroes made them pay when Jacobsen slammed in a loose ball. Any chance of an upset was ruled out with 17 minutes to go when the French first division’s top scorer Frei poked the ball into the net. Vilified by the media after being banned for spitting at England’s Steven Gerrard during Euro 2004, Frei has long since won his way back into Swiss hearts, thanks mainly to his fine international scoring record. The 25-year-old Frei grabbed his 19th goal in 35 games with four minutes remaining. "It was quite tough in the end, when you look at how the game developed," said Frei. "When you’re playing in such difficult wind conditions and with a pitch that wasn’t ideal, you really have to show your character. "I’d missed a couple of big chances before I got the goals, so I’m very, very happy and relieved.

Sven’s stars earn stripes
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Jun 5, 2005
The pity for Sven-Göran Eriksson is that it’s a women’s tournament. His England team could not be in better fettle and his own morale seemed to be brimming by the end of an unexpectedly triumphant tour of America. Not since Tomas Brolin discovered McDonald’s has a Swede gained more enjoyment from the US. How Eriksson must wish the World Cup kicked off in Munich on June 9 2005, not June 9 2006. France are in crisis. Brazil nurse burnout fears regarding Ronaldo… Colombia may be mediocre but executing chances is a function of the game where the opposition — other than perhaps its goalkeeper, and Farid Mondragon is a respected practitioner — is of little influence. Owen has hardly ever looked as lethal as he did in New Jersey, and after a slump, which began during his final months at Liverpool and continued through Euro 2004 and into his first half-season at Real Madrid, he is back. Eriksson suggested the move to Spain had enhanced the striker. “Owen has become even better. He is more lively, he takes more initiative and he seems stronger,” said the manager. “A lot of countries will be envious if we go to the World Cup with Owen and Rooney.

Robson tips England for World Cup
BBC News – Jun 9, 2005
What is Rooney, who is only 19, going to be like when he’s 23, 24, 28 if he keeps on the straight and narrow? I think he’s going to be awesome. “I think on our hands we have a Maradona or a Pele – a top, top player. ”

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson came under fire after their exit at Euro 2004. But Robson, who took England to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990, said: “If you judge the guy on results you can’t accuse him of anything. Overall his percentage of winning is terrific. He hasn’t lost many games has he?”

Not since 1958 has a team from outside Europe won a World Cup held on the continent, but Robson believes England’s biggest opposition will come from South America this time… But Robson, who took England to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990, said: “If you judge the guy on results you can’t accuse him of anything. Istanbul clouds Gerrard’s mind
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 5, 2005
Gerrard could have collected a Premiership winner’s medal at Stamford Bride today. He might not be fighting for fourth place again tomorrow. He could have shared a dressing room with Peter Cech, John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele, Arjen Robben and Damien Duff. Until Tuesday, his reward for staying at Anfield was another interminable scrap for the final Champions League spot – this time with Bolton and Everton… There have been brilliant passages in the last six seasons but no full graduation. For a star player, there is a vast difference between carrying an under-performing team with one’s talent and sharing a stage with comparably gifted colleagues. Only Gerrard can take the blame for his mystifyingly poor show at Euro 2004. But the belief survived: in a top-three team with elite strikers in front and a Makelele or Roy Keane behind, Gerrard’s talent would slash ‘n’ burn through most domestic and European opposition. Needless to say, a central midfield of Lampard, Makelele and Gerrard would require a tactical rethink at Chelsea. That problem may never arise. Gerrard’s prime dilemma is whether a team built round him, Carragher, Alonso, Fernando Morientes and this summer’s signings can break into the magic circle of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Gerrard move to prompt England rethink
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 7, 2005
If Eriksson did re-jig his side into 4-3-3 formation for the 2006 World Cup finals on German soil, comparisons would inevitably be drawn with Sir Alf Ramsey’s wingless wonders of 40 years before. If Eriksson did decide to follow most of the leading coaches heading to Germany and insert a defensive midfielder (and even Brazil’s joyous Confederations Cup-winners are expected to stiffen their midfield for next summer), speculation would intensify about Beckham’s place, assuming he was not risked in the anchoring role. Beckham works hard but his tackling is not good enough to justify the ball-winner’s duties. His strengths lie elsewhere. Eriksson would never countenance omitting Beckham, his adored captain, and the Real Madrid man deserves his England starting place simply for the quality of service he provides from the right. If Beckham were pushed up, as the right-sided prong of England’s attacking trident, Rooney would be re-positioned on the left (where Sir Alex Ferguson often deploys him at Manchester United) with Owen in the centre. The 4-3-3 school of thought, which will acquire many supporters should Gerrard, Lampard and Makelele gel successfully at Chelsea, may be tempting for Eriksson, who has used it before, but it is a system that can emasculate Rooney… The 4-3-3 school of thought, which will acquire many supporters should Gerrard, Lampard and Makelele gel successfully at Chelsea, may be tempting for Eriksson, who has used it before, but it is a system that can emasculate Rooney. The dynamic United attacker prefers striking through the middle, running towards and beyond a centre-forward. Rooney proved at Euro 2004 how devastating he can be when picking up possession in deep positions, turning and charging towards goal, using his supreme touch and physical strength to carry him into the danger zone or unleashing a shot from range. Dropping Rooney into the hole, his favourite position, makes most sense, as Eriksson has realised in settling on 4-4-1-1, but he can dominate the space that Lampard and Gerrard relish running into. Eriksson has some serious thinking to do, if he is to devise a system that allows Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard all to express themselves most effectively: 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1 promises to be a huge plot-line in England’s World Cup drama.

They will be aware that in another three weeks, Kewell, like others, will be put through further conditioning work. They will know all about Djibril Ciss? (coveted by Italian teams last summer), who, like Kewell, looked to have regained some sharpness on Tuesday, and Alonso’s recovery will be further along the tracks. And of course, Milan Baros was the top scorer at Euro 2004 — lest anyone forget. There is quality throughout this Liverpool side. Do not forget or overlook that. Then there is the new Red hero.
