Job done, now for the next task
Turkish Daily News – Turkish Daily News (subscription) – May 29, 2005
In soccer, Turkey has bids in for the 2008 UEFA Cup final and the 2012 European Championship finals and its case for being awarded both has been strengthened. Epic: For that Turkey has a great deal to thank the AC Milan and Liverpool teams. They turned in not a run of the mill final (if there is such a thing) but an epic drama. 3-0 down at half time, Liverpool should have been dead and buried. Instead they roared back in the second half, tied the score at 3-3 and eventually lifted the trophy by winning the penalty shootout. This was not so much the stuff of soccer as the stuff of fairytales. It was a final which will stay in the memory a very long time… Logistics A European Championship is a far bigger event than a one-off Champions League final and the logistics are vastly more complex. For starters, a Champions League final needs only one stadium. Euro 2012 willl require at least eight and where are they to come from? For its failed joint bid with Greece to host Euro 2008, Turkey offered Ataturk Olympic, Izmir Ataturk, Ankara 19 Mayis and either Fenerbahce’s Sukru Saracoglu or a new stadium in Antalya which because the bid failed has not been built. Ataturk Olympic, OK. Sukru Saracoglu, OK. Izmir Ataturk needs work. 19 Mayis needs massive work.

Year of regret for sorry Redknapp

Sanchez said: “I am committed to doing the Europeans [Euro 2008 qualifying programme]. The IFA told me they would not stop me if there was a decent job, and if I could merge the two they would not be against that. “Mandaric and Lowe have certainly had plenty of experience of appointing new managers, though without long-term success. The next appointments will bring their combined total to 17, with Lowe searching for his ninth in 10 years and Mandaric his eighth in eight. Sir Clive Woodward, Southampton’s technical director, distanced himself from the possibility of becoming the club’s next manager, the former England rugby union coach saying it was “nonsense.

EXCO set for Manchester meeting

Inter were ordered to play their next six European club competition games behind closed doors as a result of the disturbances, with the last two under a probationary period of three years. In addition, the Italian club were fined CHF 300,000, and UEFA says it plans stricter measures if such incidents continue. Clear message”We are going to be very firm in our statements towards all stakeholders in European football that what has happened in the spring is not acceptable,” UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson said after the last EXCO meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April. The UEFA CEO also admitted that financial sanctions might no longer be sufficient, saying: “In the current financial situation, we have to look into other consequences rather than just financial consequences. The fines were stronger instruments before, when there was a different financial situation for the clubs. We must look into other consequences such as withdrawal of points and sporting consequences for misbehaviour. ” ‘Identify alternatives’The EXCO has asked UEFA to look into what kind of action could taken immediately and in the long term… “We are responsible for having secure venues where we would like families to come and watch football, and it is absolutely unacceptable to have that kind of environment [as in Milan]. ” UEFA has also called for coherence as regards safety and security responsibilities of clubs and the authorities in some countries, and has urged an end to provocative statements that could also impact on match security. Competition regulationsWith UEFA EURO 2008? in Austria and Switzerland now three years away, the regulations and game schedule within the competition will be discussed, as will the format of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, in terms of the competition’s commercial and sporting appeal. Media conferenceThe meeting is scheduled to end at 12. 00GMT on Saturday 18 June. There will be a media conference at the end of the meeting. Media interested in attending the press conference are asked to inform UEFA Media Services via email to.

John Toshack takes a depleted squad of Wales players to San Sebastian for 5 day training camp
John Toshack and his summer training camp squad today head for San Sebastian for 5 days in the sun to allow the manager to asses some options available to him as he looks to build a squad capable of taking Wales to Euro 2008. The squad however, is short of many players normally regulars in Wales squads in recent times due to injury or unavailablity. Robert Page, Jason Koumas and Danny Collins have joined the list of withdrawals from the squad with Page facing surgery and Collins and Koumas unavailable. John Oster and Sam Ricketts have ruled themselves out last week, joining some 12 other players who miss out. Wrexham pair Chris Llewellyn and Mark Jones were called up last week as reserves, but Toshack will not call any further players up… John Oster and Sam Ricketts have ruled themselves out last week, joining some 12 other players who miss out. “I`m committed to the European Championships with Northern Ireland, and I`m looking forward to those games,” said Sanchez. “But if a situation came along where it would be a step up professionally, and the IFA said that they would be happy to combine the two, then it might happen in the future. “I have really enjoyed the Northern Ireland job, but basically if a good job came along and I could not turn it down, I would look to do both jobs. “Northern Ireland have only one game left against Estonia this season so any new role will come into place next season… “I`m committed to the European Championships with Northern Ireland, and I`m looking forward to those games,” said Sanchez. “But if a situation came along where it would be a step up professionally, and the IFA said that they would be happy to combine the two, then it might happen in the future. “I have really enjoyed the Northern Ireland job, but basically if a good job came along and I could not turn it down, I would look to do both jobs. “Northern Ireland have only one game left against Estonia this season so any new role will come into place next season. “There again, it would be one-season operation as the Europeans will be done and dusted in the one year.

Darkest hour”As fate would have it, the draw for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League [which brought together Liverpool and Juventus] highlighted the 20th anniversary of an event we will never forget,” Mr Olsson said. “What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Comprehensive review”Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims,” he added. “Football and the joy it brings its millions of supporters throughout the world was not at issue; instead a comprehensive review of the ways of tackling the problems associated with these big matches was required. Portugal proof”Consideration gave way to action and a series of measures were meticulously drawn up, revised and implemented. Last year in Portugal, [UEFA] EURO 2004™ proved that international co-operation between local and national governments, police forces and the governing bodies of football can go a long way to helping create the sort of festival atmosphere that should be associated with football. Sharing experience”Sharing that experience is another way of ensuring safety and security.

Decisive winA 5-1 win against Békéscsabai EFC last weekend finally secured Debrecen the Hungarian title that had eluded them, putting them nine points ahead of Budapest-based Ferencváros with three games of the season remaining. Finally, there was relief for coach Attila Supka. Supka relieved”It was hard from me at first because I was not a big name and I was expected to lead the team to the title,” admitted Supka. “I could have said positive things if we hadn’t won the title, but the only thing that coaches are judged on is results. “Teething problemWhile the final margin of victory was an impressive one, Debrecen’s season was not entirely smooth. With former Hungarian international striker Lázár Szentes at the helm, Debrecen started the season well enough, but the club’s supporters were not enamoured of the team’s cautious tactics. Things came to a head when Szentes was abused by supporters following a 1-1 draw at Pápa TFC.

RTÉ Sport: Ferguson prepares for feisty affair

He managed to restore order and went on to produce an almost perfect performance, even if he did end up booking six and dismissing Mikael Silvestre. With so much at stake, the concerns over player behaviour are obvious. And while Ferguson does not anticipate any major problems, he does believe Styles may need to use a bit of discretion and allow the game to find its level. “You have to remember the players are human beings,” cautioned Ferguson. “It is a cup final and there are bound to be some nerves. The early parts of the game will be feisty, just as they were at Old Trafford and Highbury this season.

” I had suggested a teatime show or even a late-night show but the best we could manage was to announce through the local radio and newspapers that the start would be delayed until the end of the 90 minutes. This way I would still have sufficient time for a complete set. I had remained quietly confident that it would not take very long for Liverpool to subdue an overconfident AC Milan. That was until I heard the team news. Now I thought it might possibly require extra time. If so, I would have to get on stage and face the unusual torture of having the score relayed to me by semaphore or hand-printed cards. The last time we attempted this was in Glasgow during the infamous Michael Thomas game at Anfield in 1989.
