Plenty of talent, weary players at Confederations Cup
USA Today – Jun 13, 2005
Argentina has goal-scoring star Carlos Tevez, along with midfielder Javier Saviola and defenders Walter Samuel, Javier Zanetti and Gabriel Heinze. But Juan Sebastian Veron, Hernan Crespo and Robert Ayala are among the big names left out. Theodoros Zagorakis, star of Greece’s Euro 2004 triumph, will be available. He was released by his Italian club Bologna although it still has two relegation playoff games against Parma. Parma has pulled midfielders Vince Grella and Marco Bresciano from Australia’s squad, and they won’t play at all. Brazil is in the same group as Greece, Mexico and a Japan team that became the first nation to qualify for next year’s World Cup. Argentina also guaranteed its World Cup place by beating Brazil 3-1 Wednesday and joins Australia, Tunisia and host Germany in the other group… There are no games in Munich, host of the World Cup opener, or Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, which will stage the final. The Confederations Cup final is in Frankfurt on June 29. Blatter: Mexican players will be suspended if they don’t show up
FRANKFURT, Germany — FIFA president Sepp Blatter threatened to suspend three Mexican players if they don’t show up for the Confederations Cup. Midfielders Alberto Medina and Ramon Morales and forward Omar Bravo, who all play for Guadalajara’s Chivas, are on the roster for Mexico, which opens against Japan in Hannover on Thursday. But the club wants them released to play in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s club championship. “Their players cannot be replaced,” Blatter said Monday. “These players will have to show up on the pitch.

Confederations Cup from today
Hindu – Jun 15, 2005
The competition gives the Greeks a chance to prove that its Euro 2004 triumph was no fluke. Having reached the second round of the World Cup on home soil three years ago, Asian champion Japan — coached by Brazilian great Zico — hopes to maintain momentum by beating Mexico in Hannover on Wednesday. But the players believe they are not playing that well. Poor show

Germany lost in the final at the last World Cup but flopped badly at Euro 2004, where it went out in the first round. Because it hosts the World Cup, the team has been unable to play competitive games. The Confederations Cup final is set for Frankfurt’s Waldstadion on June 29. — AP

Tomorrw for the Champions League, we’ll wait for Qinny to stop reading here, I hope Porto draw with Artmedia which puts Rangers through no matter our result against Inter. Daven, you have selective memory, still no Idea about football. Porto were not the better Team, they had too many members of Equity on the night, it was a travesty. Perhaps one day you’ll reach a European Final, but don’t hold your breath. As for the CL, Rangers to lose 3-1 to Inter, and Artmedia to beat Porto 2-1. well I won’t hold my breath either… Portugal played the Euro 2004 with Ricardo on goal, Pauleta up front… and may other things I think weren’t the best we had! So, they didn’t “deserve” to win it! Those “players” couldn’t become “legends” as the players that won the European Cup! The same applies to FC Porto! FC Porto has many players better than Jorginho. In fact, all FC Porto wingers are better than Jorginho, he is clearly the worst! Portuguese league level is, for instance, FC Porto central defenders that are good to face Portuguese opposition but weak to face Europe’s greats. How many goals has he scored? Zero!! Adriaanse withdrew Postiga from the team because he was a forward that couldn’t score! I agree with that, good decision, but what about Jorginho, isn’t he also a forward that can’t score? And how many chances had Postiga? 2! And at least he scores for Portugal. What about Jorginho! He already had more than 15 chances! So, if FC Porto plays with him instead of other “good” player, not only they don’t deserve to win, they will also not win (deserving or not) most times as a NATURAL consequence. And if the coach can’t see that Jorginho is the main reason for FC Porto bad results, he may lose his job! I’m not the kind of fan that “only” likes the tricky player in a team.

Knee injury holds up Kluivert move
CNN International – Jun 10, 2005
Kluivert, who was originally scheduled to be officially unveiled on Friday evening, damaged his left knee in January 2004 while playing for Barcelona against Real Zaragoza, missing three months of the season as a result. He moved to Newcastle United last July but his season at St James’s Park was blighted by injury and poor form. He has scored 40 times in 79 internationals but was overlooked for Euro 2004 and has not represented his country under new coach Marco van Basten.

Gerrard feared England axe

I will be more disciplined. It’s difficult to play five or six games as an attacking midfielder for Liverpool and then come in and set the world alight in the holding role. “It worked well at times in Euro 2004. Frank’s form was really good in the tournament. Everyone knows I had distractions [Chelsea’s failed wooing]. I’m not using those as an excuse. I wasn’t good enough in that tournament.

No more than half a chance
Turkish Daily News – Turkish Daily News (subscription) – Jun 12, 2005
Ukraine’s 1-0 victory in Athens on Saturday had two very significant effects

The win left Ukraine needing only one more win from its last 3 games to secure a final place as group winner. Ukraine can achieve that next time out away to moderate Georgia. If it does not do so, it has the visit of Turkey to come four days later and what looks like a home banker against Albania as its last game in October… Some of the same commentators who did the trashing went overboard in their euphoria at the 6-0 road victory against Kazakhstan which followed on Wednesday. Neither reaction is realistic. We saw at Euro 2004 that Greece is one of the hardest teams on the continent to break down. Even without the injured Traianos Dellas and suspended captain Theo Zagorakis, they made life immensely difficult for Turkey by using coach Otto Rehhagel’s accustomed methods, keeping the defense well manned, jamming the midfield and chasing and harrying opponents remorselessly. This is an aproach which Turkey still cannot deal with, though it is not often going to meet an opponent which can put it into practise as effectively as Greece does. The knockers who trashed Trabzonspor captain Fatih Tekke for his two second half misses ought to know better. The first, it is true, should have been a goal.

In Reality worth watching

I fancy both England and Scotland to win and recommend four doubles on a 1-0 and 2-0 correct scoreline in both matches. The best bet of the weekend is Denmark in the World Cup qualifier in Copenhagen against Greece at Evens with Ladbrokes. The Greeks are out of form, not the best travellers and a far cry from the side that produced one of the greatest upsets in football history when landing Euro 2004. They look set to miss out on a place in next year’s World Cup finals. William Hill are taking a chance by offering 15-8 Holland to win in Prague, in what looks the most mouthwatering clash of this weekend’s qualifiers. They look worth a punt. There is only a small domestic programme with Nottingham Forest worth supporting at 11-5 with Coral to win on Sunday at Southend, while in the Nationwide Conference, York and Grays can both gain away wins and should be backed at 6-4 and 11-8 with William Hill… I fancy both England and Scotland to win and recommend four doubles on a 1-0 and 2-0 correct scoreline in both matches. Last of the big spenders

“There’s still a raft of nutty agents out there who think they can make big and quick killings but most of us, now, are professionals. People in our business have accepted the new reality,” Smith said. “It’s not in our interests to ask for fees and wages that will cripple clubs. There are still some damn good deals out there to be done without killing the golden goose. ” The annual review of football by accountants Deloitte, published last week, showed a majority of Premiership clubs have been cutting costs and pointed to an industry in perhaps healthier shape at the top level than 12 months ago. “After the ITV Digital debacle a few years ago there was a realignment of soccer where most banks took fright and wouldn’t lend to clubs any more,” Smith said. “Until that point, chairmen had always been able to borrow money against future television deals… His organisation is still compiling its register of footballers who are out of contract or available for transfer. The PFA’s interim list comprises 430 players and the total is expected to touch 500. Out of work are more than 50 full or under-21 internationals, four ex-Manchester United players and two members of Greece’s Euro 2004-winning squad, as well as famous PFA members such as Steve McManaman, Keith Gillespie and Craig Short. But most job-seekers come from the lower divisions and the PFA is pouring more and more money into providing educational courses and professional advice to help players find jobs outside the game. “Everyone still wants to be a footballer,” said Taylor, “but on average it’s an eight-year career, you lose 60 players every year through injury and every summer about a fifth of the workforce is out of work.
