BBC NEWS | UK | England | Kent | Portugal football trial ‘unfair&#…
BBC News – Jul 25, 2005
Garry Mann, 47, a firefighter from Faversham in Kent, was given a two-year sentence and immediately deported to the UK after a hearing in June 2004. He was one of several fans deported from Portugal after a disturbance in the Algarve resort town of Albufeira. A UK judge has ruled he was tried too quickly for justice to have been done. The ruling from the district judge at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court came as the Metropolitan Police tried to impose a football banning order on Mann, which would have barred him from travelling to matches abroad.

Chelsea gulf not that wide, says Ferguson
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 23, 2005
Arriving for the start of their Asian tour, the Manchester United manager was asked if he could think of any areas in which United were better than Chelsea. Ferguson did not actually identify one, though he said that the gap between the two sides that last season left United further off the pace – 18 points adrift of Chelsea – than any time since 1991 was not a vast one. “Chelsea had a fantastic season, an unusual season and one which you wouldn’t think they would be able to replicate. Jose Mourinho has bought one or two more players designed to make them better in Europe… “If they are to succeed, then United, who left Cristiano Ronaldo behind because his father is ill, will have to make a better fist of the opening months of the season than they managed in 2004. In footballing terms it makes little sense to endure a 24-hour round trip to the Far East to play in suffocating heat, even if you are guaranteed around £4 million for doing so. Last summer’s American tour, in which half-fit players were pressed into service too soon after Euro 2004, was regarded by Ferguson as something of a disaster and this time United have ensured they have completed much of their pre-season training, which was carried out in Portugal, before setting off to make cash. When they returned from America, United faced Chelsea in the opening match of the season without Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze, who were at the Olympics, plus the injured Ruud van Nistelrooy, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand. That game was lost 1-0, creating a gap that widened with every month. “We were then chasing Chelsea all the time. In the past we have always had the ability and the confidence to overcome bad starts but Chelsea kept on with the same consistency throughout,” Ferguson said.

Pubs group cheers sales
manchesteronline.co.uk – Jul 15, 2005
The Watford-based group said like-for-like sales were positive in the three weeks to Sunday, although the year-on-year gain was helped by the negative impact of Euro 2004 on the performance 12 months ago. In the previous seven weeks, the figure became a decrease of 1. 8% as Wetherspoon continued to battle against tough trading conditions. It did not provide a breakdown of sales at the 25 pubs where it has banned smoking as part of an attempts to pre-empt legislation on the issue. A further 30 sites, including pubs in Leicester, Chichester, Birmingham and Birkenhead, are expected to become non-smoking by Christmas as Wetherspoon looks for 10% of its estate to be smoke-free by the end of the year… In the previous seven weeks, the figure became a decrease of 1. 8% as Wetherspoon continued to battle against tough trading conditions. ProceedingFinance director Jim Clarke said those trends had continued, but added that the initiative was proceeding to plan. He said: “It’s not just a case of closing one night and opening as a non-smoking pub the next.

WORLD CUP 2006: Draws not enough for France, says Domenech

In the first half I saw everything I asked for from my players: movement and hunger, which have been our bywords since the start of the rebuilding process. We want to create something by experimenting a little, but without the crowd ever getting bored of watching us. That’s the most important thing for us, and unfortunately it’s also what came out of EURO 2004 to some extent. So the desire stood out for me, the pleasure that the players took from being on the pitch. And, of course, there was the joy at the end of the game. It could easily have been a complete waste, with the holidays so close, the nature of friendlies, the fitness of the players at the end of the season and our opponents’ reputation. But it was the opposite, so I can only be pleased… It’s true that it’s necessary to win matches, but we couldn’t carry on playing well without eventually getting a result. We’re advancing along the lines I’ve been talking about from the very beginning, and, by playing better and better, it’s inevitable that we’ll pick up victories. It’s not by being afraid and failing to play our game that we’ll achieve anything. So that win was the confirmation of everything we’ve been doing for almost a year. France played an unfamiliar formation with a defensive midfielder in the middle, two creative players in front of him and two wingers. What do you think a system like that can bring to Les Bleus?Exactly what we saw in the first half against Hungary. It’s a tactic that allows a lot of overlaps, because there aren’t really any fixed positions.

Meanwhile: The morning after the Olympic Games
International Herald Tribune – Jul 16, 2005
A year ago, the Games and Greece's victory in the Euro 2004 soccer championships were world headlines. In June 2005, the main news revolved around the fate of the city's sludge dump. After building such a solid foundation, you might think the country would not be gun-shy about capitalizing on its hard-won success. And yet, say many, that is exactly what has happened. Granted, there is something refreshing about a refusal to crow; but the Greeks, who have all but patented the word "Olympic," have taken it almost to the other extreme. Apart from sales of commemorative CDs and the like, direct reminders of the Games are few – even in the midst of the city's new working infrastructure that is the real leftover bonanza. Take, for example, a curious late-night sight on Athenian streets in past months – road crews spraying into oblivion the city's Olympic road rings, which had been painted on major arteries to facilitate traffic flow during the Games.

does not have exclusive claim on this never-say-die characteristic. But the elite national teams do have this in common. Argentina, Brazil, Germany, and Italy have long traditions of dramatic comebacks, their players’ confidence and concentration levels usually a notch above the opposition during crunch time. Fitness levels and physical preparation play a part, but late-game heroics are mostly a mental exercise, and are something that will separate the U… players; they endure some especially tough treatment in Latin America. But in the next World Cup, the increased media coverage could exacerbate circumstances, as it did in Euro 2004, when a Danish camera was trained on Italy’s Francesco Totti, catching him in the act of spitting at Christian Poulsen. Next time, there could be a camera devoted to Poulsen, and it might reveal him as a not totally innocent party. Referees are constantly reminded about not only catching the retaliatory party, but also the provoking one. Television cameramen are not given the same mandate, and the most graphic image is often the retaliation. A little shirt tug, a raking of the Achilles’ tendon, the stepping on a toe, all can be irksome; but these are difficult to detect, and they often occur when everyone is looking the other way.

The Russia midfielder made just 16 league appearances for the club last season, most as substitute, having returned from a loan at Portsmouth. “The last two months of last season at Chelsea were painful for me because I’m not used to sitting on the bench,” he told the BBC Russian Service website. Addicks boss Alan Curbishley said: “I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for allowing Alexei to join us. ”

Smertin admitted he had received other offers, but said he wanted to stay in London. Smertin’s decision to go to Charlton will be a disappointment to Portsmouth, who had the player on a season-long loan in the 2003-04 season… “He told me he still counts on me and that Chelsea have a long season in front of them, and we decided that if something goes wrong for me at Charlton I will be able to rejoin the Blues. “He said that they would be waiting for me. ”

Smertin was Russian footballer of the year in 1999 and represented his country in Euro 2004, as well as the 2002 World Cup. He joins striker Darren Bent and midfielder Darren Ambrose, defenders Gonzalo Sorondo, Chris Powell and Kelly Youga as other summer recruits at The Valley, alongside another on-loan player – Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector.

The central attacking midfielder improved leaps and bounds in a Djurgardens side which claimed two Swedish championships. He has also played for AIK Solna after starting his career at Degerfors. Fenlon to continue attacking policy
July 14, 2005
Shelbourne manager Pat Fenlon insists his side will be trying to win next week?s second leg at Tolka Park, despite the cushion of a first leg lead following Wednesday night?s Champions League opener against Glentoran. The 2-1 away win, courtesy of two goals from Jason Byrne and fully deserved after 75 minutes of dominance by the eircom League champions, sets Shels up for next week?s home leg at Tolka Park. The buffer leaves Shels in the comfort zone, with the knowledge that even a 1-0 defeat next week will not be enough to deprive them of a second qualifying round clash with Steaua Bucharest. But far from sitting back, Fenlon says his side will approach next week?s game in their habitual attacking mindset. He said: ?We will go out to win the game next week, just as we always do. I am always confident we can beat teams. My team is full of good players.

Sometimes it’s brine and sometimes it’s syrup, but most of the time it’s just plain old water. The tricky part is that when they label the can, they’re only required to include the net quantity, which is the combined weight of the food and the water, rather than the drained weight of the food alone. A certain percentage of the net quantity is supposed to be the actual food, but until cans start coming in “clear,” most consumers have no idea how much of their food is actually food until they get home.
