Four guilty of Euro 2004 pub riot
BBC News – Jul 29, 2005
Norwich Crown Court heard how up to 300 England fans hurled missiles at the Red Lion Pub in Thetford after England’s defeat against Portugal in June 2004. Some 40 customers were locked inside the pub for their own safety. William Harvey, 20, Daniel May, 21, Stephen Rothwell, 32, and Danny Remblance, 19, all of Diss, Norfolk, denied violent disorder. On Friday the men’s barristers declined to offer evidence on their behalf and the men chose not to give any evidence… Some 40 customers were locked inside the pub for their own safety. Christopher Morgan, prosecuting, said England fans threw bricks, bottles and bits of paving slabs at the pub on 24 June. Customers inside the pub “felt threatened and feared for their own safety”, he said. Police were present as there had been an indication trouble might flare because Thetford has a large Portuguese community, said Mr Morgan. All four men will be sentenced next month.

As one of the judges commented on Tuesday, there is “something sinister” about using secondary legislation to create a criminal offence “by the back door”. Without proper legal aid in Portugal, there was nothing to prevent “substantial breaches” of the men’s human rights. Granted legal representation back in England, the men were able to defeat police applications for football banning orders. But their barristers – Jon Whitfield and Liam Walker, from specialist criminal chambers at 15 New Bridge Street – still don’t know if their work to avoid another miscarriage of justice will be funded by legal aid. Term ends tomorrow and the law page is off for its August hols.

Carragher keen to show worth
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 2, 2005
Overlooked in favour of the unproven Ledley King when Eriksson was without John Terry for England’s Euro 2004 opener against France last summer, Carragher is in danger of becoming the nearly man among England’s defensive riches. But for the injuries that have led to the absences of Terry, King, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and Matthew Upson from the England party for tomorrow’s friendly against Holland at Villa Park, Carragher may well have been forced to spend another international contemplating the log-jam of defensive rivals ahead of him in the pecking order. Instead he gets a rare start, probably alongside another fringe figure, Wes Brown.

Stelios wants to resolve future
BBC News – Aug 1, 2005
You can see that from the football I play,” he said. “I expect things will get rolling again and the gaffer (Sam Allardyce) or the chairman (Phil Gartside) will speak about the situation and bring an end to the story. ”

Allardyce said the club had not received a bid from Liverpool. “We don’t want to lose him, but my chairman assures me Liverpool have not made a bid for him,” Allardyce told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek. “So we can just hope it’s speculation. He was very valuable for us last year and had a great season for us. ”

Stelios, who scored five goals in 11 league games at the end of last season, has one year left on his current Wanderers contract. “I’d feel let down if he moved to Anfield, but these things happen in football,” Allardyce added. “He’s proved everyone wrong since he came back from Euro 2004, but if someone can bid so much money you can’t resist it. And life moves on, that’s football.

“Eight to 10 million euros is impossible so Milan Baros will not be moving to Schalke. Just 12 months ago, Baros was the toast of his homeland after his five goals in Portugal for the Czech Republic had made him tournament top scorer at Euro 2004. However, the arrival of Peter Crouch at Liverpool from Southampton this summer has further limited his first-team opportunities with the European champions… “Eight to 10 million euros is impossible so Milan Baros will not be moving to Schalke. Rooney outlines hopes for season
BBC News – Jul 31, 2005
Last season Rooney ended as FA Cup losing finalist, his first major final. He told the News of the World: “We’ve now gone two years without a title and the players know that’s not good enough. This is a big season for us. “Every player is looking to the World Cup. I think we’ve got every chance of winning it – it could be our year. ”

Last year Rooney’s pre-season preparations were handicapped by the broken foot he sustained at Euro 2004, but the United striker is confident he will start the new campaign in better physical shape after their Far East tour… “Every player is looking to the World Cup. Last year Rooney’s pre-season preparations were handicapped by the broken foot he sustained at Euro 2004, but the United striker is confident he will start the new campaign in better physical shape after their Far East tour. He added: “I am really happy with my fitness. We have had three games on our tour of Asia and it has really got me going. “Last year I didn’t get a full pre-season because of my injuries, so this is the first time in two years I have been able to get the hard work done at this early stage.

World Cup officials worried about security
Independent Online – Jul 28, 2005
Outbreaks of hooliganism have hit Europe this year, but several key Germans said on Wednesday at an international soccer conference that they fear terrorism is the bigger threat. “We’ll take care of the hooligans, but the danger exists that the World Cup will be misused by international terrorism,” said Bavarian governor Edmund Stoiber of soccer’s showcase event, which starts June 9 in Germany. Franz Beckenbauer, head of Germany’s World Cup committee, said in the wake of recent terrorist bombings in London and Egypt that safety can not be guaranteed. ‘There is no such thing as 100 percent security’”There is no such thing as 100 percent security, but if we let ourselves be terrorised, we can close up shop right now,” said Beckenbauer at the three-day, 1 600-member conference that looked at issues such as economics, politics and training methods in soccer. Fifa President Sepp Blatter and Uefa counterpart Lennart Johansson both expressed faith in Germany’s security measures… Johannson said hooliganism was held in check at Euro 2004 because, for the first time, countries brought their own security experts to travel with their teams. “If we capitulate to terror, that would be the bankruptcy of soccer and sport,” Johannson added.

So we can just hope it’s speculation”

I cant see the point of this transfer, because for me theres no doubt that he will only be a squad player. Why give up regular football just to have LFC on your CV

Also it would be a disloyalty to the man who made him, who gave him a chance when most clubs were ignorant to the idea of bringing Greek internationals to the English game

“I would feel let down if he left. When we brought him over everyone thought it was difficult for players from Greece to be good in the Premiership but we proved them wrong
