SOCCER: Newcastle bag England’s goal machine
U.TV – Aug 30, 2005
But these rare rash moments are outweighed by his goal contribution. Owen, indeed, has shrugged off concerns of his extravagant gambling habits, his penalty taking and his apparently weak hamstrings. Such concerns will not matter to current England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who still sees Owen has his first-choice striker. Why does Eriksson not opt for Jermain Defoe? Owen is Eriksson`s reliable source of goals. The 2001 European Footballer of the Year is a member of the exclusive Premiership 100 goals club, and has been a consistent scorer for England since his wonder-strike against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup and stands fourth in the all-time scoring list with 32 in 71 caps. A hat-trick in England`s famous 5-1 victory over Germany in Munich was followed by more goals in the 2002 World Cup and the renowned big-stage performer struck again in Euro 2004 with a razor-sharp quarter-final strike against Portugal. Judging by his England strike-rate Owen`s status as a national treasure should be assured, but the rise of Wayne Rooney has seen Owen relegated in the nation`s affections… Why does Eriksson not opt for Jermain Defoe? The Manchester United striker`s all-round contribution to England`s Euro 2004 effort in the summer catapulted him to worldwide stardom and that, combined with Owen`s untimely goal drought, saw Rooney usurp Owen as England`s golden boy. A year ago, beating Bobby Charlton`s goals record for England of 49 – long assumed to be Owen`s rightful inheritance – appeared in doubt. At Liverpool he appeared dispensable, but moved to Real Madrid while Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros started the 2004-05 season in the Reds` attack.

Critics want Eriksson out
Times of India – Aug 31, 2005
England’s three
competitive losses under Eriksson stick in the memory. When the team reached the
World Cup quarterfinals in 2002, England held a 1-0 lead over Brazil but lost
2-1 to a 10-man team after Ronaldinho had been sent off early in the second
half. Eriksson was criticized for his tactics in not attacking a
weakened team which went on to reach the final and win the title for the fifth
time. At Euro 2004, England led France 1-0 going into injury time of
a group game but lost 2-1 after giving away a free kick and a
penalty. In the quarterfinal against host Portugal, England
squandered an early lead but lost striker Wayne Rooney, one of the stars of the
tournament with four goals, midway through the first half with a broken
foot. Eriksson didn’t have an alternative plan to make up for
Rooney’s absence and England went out on penalties after a 2-2
tie. The current England starting lineup appears to be its strongest
in more than a decade.

Beckham on the bench should not be so far-fetched
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Aug 30, 2005
He should take a lesson from “Big” Phil Scolari, who did not hesitate to replace Luis Figo — the Portugal captain and, like Beckham, an iconic figure — against Spain at Euro 2004. Figo stormed off but returned against England in the quarter-final to prove his point. Eriksson has been at pains to deny that he had considered dropping Rio Ferdinand for his slack display in the second half against Denmark but would it be such a bad thing if the Manchester United defender did not take his place for granted? And how healthy is it that senior players now regard friendly matches with such disdain that, as they did in Copenhagen, they switch off their brains for the second half? Eriksson has been subjected to some baseless criticism since he slipped on the toxic tracksuit in January 2001. He stabilised the ship after the tactical anarchy of Kevin Keegan and was unfairly held solely responsible in some quarters for the defeat by Brazil at the 2002 World Cup finals. Under his guidance, the team continued to progress to the 2004 European Championship with Wayne Rooney leading the attack… He should take a lesson from “Big” Phil Scolari, who did not hesitate to replace Luis Figo — the Portugal captain and, like Beckham, an iconic figure — against Spain at Euro 2004. But he’s well aware that Hearts, both at a plc and football level, have not been the best practitioners of public relations in recent years under former chief executive Chris Robinson. Diplomatically, he suggests things could have been better. Sports reporters, not known for their patience or diplomacy, would say the previous regime was downright obstructive at times. Which is not the kind of situation Mr Southern and his communications manager Clare Cowan are fostering from here on in, particularly now that the foundations of a decent and easily marketable product on the park are taking shape. Backed by the deep pockets of Lithuanian banker and new Hearts owner Romanov, Scotland’s “always the bridesmaid” team have brought in six overseas players this summer, including Czech internationalist Rudi Skacel, Lithuanian international player Edgaras Jankauskas, and Takis Fyssas, the former Benfica player who played in the triumphant Greek side that clinched the Euro 2004 title. Through a combination of a flying start and the role played in it by overseas players, pictures of jubilant foreign stars in Hearts jerseys have been featuring regularly in papers and on TV in places like Lithuania, Greece, Germany, Portugal, the Czech Republic and France, where they are followed by fans of their national side or by supporters of their previous clubs. RTÉ Sport: Sabrosa poised for Anfield switch

Simao came through the Sporting Lisbon youth system before moving to Barcelona in a 10million euros deal in 1999. After two campaigns in Spain, he returned to his homeland with Benfica, who he helped to win the 2004 Portuguese Cup and last season’s Superliga title. He made his debut for Portugal in 1998 but was not included in the country’s Euro 2000 squad and missed the World Cup two years later through injury. Simao did play for his national team when they hosted Euro 2004 and finished runners-up to Greece. The federation said in a statement on Wednesday: “The Benfica forward Simao Sabrosa has been authorised to be temporarily absent from national team training to travel to Liverpool so he can undergo a medical. The national team coach (Luiz Felipe Scolari) accepted the player’s request and it’s expected that the Portuguese international will return later this afternoon in time to begin training at 5:30… After two campaigns in Spain, he returned to his homeland with Benfica, who he helped to win the 2004 Portuguese Cup and last season’s Superliga title. Capello callIn taking this step, the FIGC has sought the opinion of some of the most important figures in Italian football. Last term Juventus coach Fabio Capello called for television evidence against injury fakers when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was suspended for three matches after cameras caught him hitting Iván Cordoba during a game between the Bianconeri and FC Internazionale Milano. ‘Spirit of fair play’”It’s fair to punish whoever hits an opponent and is not seen by the referee,” he said. “But I also believe that a player who exaggerates or feigns an injury should be punished in the same way. Zlatan did hit Cordoba in the neck, and Cordoba fell with his hands on his face as if he had been punched. We are the main actors of this show and we must always behave in the spirit of fair play. ”

Fletcher points the way forward for Scotland’s campaign

“I know they are used to playing in big stadiums, but whether they will be used to an atmosphere like a full Hampden remains to be seen. “Italy are one of the best teams in the world with world-class players and they are top of the group and full of confidence. But we’re looking to spring a shock as we did against Holland in the Euro 2004 qualifiers two years ago when we won 1-0. ” Smith has instilled a new belief in the national team after a run of poor results under Berti Vogts, but Fletcher, 21, refuses to criticise the former coach. “Berti took a lot of unfair criticism,” he said. “He thought we had to change things and bring in young players even though it was going to be hard. He was hoping to get results, but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen… He was hoping to get results, but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. “But a lot of young players in the squad, like myself, have a lot to thank Berti for. If it wasn’t for him, some of us might not even be here. ” Marcello Lippi, the Italy coach, expects a more challenging game than the last time the teams played, the 2-0 triumph over Scotland at the San Siro Stadium in March, but he still believes that his team will come away from Hampden Park as winners. “We expect a different Scotland from the one we faced at the San Siro,” Lippi said. “They have played more games together now, but this is the time for us to impose our game. In the past few months, our national team has changed mentality and has regained trust in our means.
