Rooney covets central role
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 2, 2005
In his MUTV commentary for the Middlesbrough game, Crerand quite rightly cited the example of Saha’s nod-down for Rooney’s phenomenal volley. Rooney’s best position is marauding from a support-striker’s role. Euro 2004 confirmed that. Eriksson refused to accept that Rooney had been emasculated on the left. The coach does not do public displays of emotion, but even his inscrut-able face flickered with a trace of animation yesterday when the accusation was made that it was a “waste of talent to play Rooney wide and out of position”. “Absolutely not,” Eriksson countered. By the Swede’s non-confrontational standards, this was an emphatic retort.

Eriksson rejects rift claims
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 28, 2005
Eriksson changed his team’s formation for the embarrassing defeat to Northern Ireland earlier this month, with captain David Beckham in a deep central role. He was widely criticised at the time for going with tactics thought to have been suggested by certain team members, as well as accommodating Beckham at whatever cost… I’ve played that way with every team I’ve coached. “Hans Krankl has been sacked as coach of England’s World Cup qualifying opponents Austria, with Josef Hickersberger set to replace him. Krankl, whose contract was due to expire next month, leaves the job ahead of schedule after failing to lead the country to either Euro 2004 or next summer’s World Cup finals in Germany. The Austrian Football Federation (OFB) have identified Hickersberger, currently coach of Austrian champions Rapid Vienna, as the person to lead them into the European Championships in 2008, a tournament they co-host with Switzerland. It is not clear whether Hickersberger will be released by Rapid in time to coach Austria when they played England at old Trafford on Oct 8.

Basketball: Zorba gets to dance once more
International Herald Tribune – Sep 27, 2005
Basketball is the second-biggest sport in Greece behind soccer, and the fact the Greeks are now European champions in both has ignited a new round of celebrations to match those following Euro 2004. "This is something very special for us. It is not often that a country is champion in two sports," said point guard Nikos Zisis, who contributed 13 points in Greece's 78-62 victory over Germany in Belgrade on Sunday night. A tough defense and 22 points from Theodoros Papaloukas helped Greece frustrate Dirk Nowitzki and his German teammates. Nowitzki, the tournament's most valuable player, scored 23 points but was only 1-for-8 from 3-point range… Basketball is the second-biggest sport in Greece behind soccer, and the fact the Greeks are now European champions in both has ignited a new round of celebrations to match those following Euro 2004. The entertaining ranged from trips to the Derby, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the St Leger, Euro 2004 and Royal Ascot (but not for Labour MPs) to seats at the best restaurants in London – such as Le Gavroche – where guests often arrived in chauffeur-driven limousines. The company box at Manchester United was also used to entertain VIPs. Among those targeted for meetings were Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer; John Healy, Economic Secretary at the Treasury; Richard Caborn, the Minister for Sport; and Tessa Jowell, secretary of state at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The entire 16-strong membership of the parliamentary scrutiny committee, which examined the draft Gambling Bill last spring and summer, was earmarked for briefings, meetings or meals, with pride of place going to John Greenway, the Conservative committee chairman. The papers disclose “corporate hospitality & dinner – ongoing” with Chris Bell, chief executive of Ladbrokes.

Manchester United vs Benfica: United should end a bad week well
Squarefootball – Sep 26, 2005
Wes Brown is still missing, as is South African international Quinton Fortune, further reducing Ferguson?s defensive options. In addition, John O?Shea limped out of United?s disappointing 2-1 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (September 24). If the Irish international does not make the starting line-up, Sir Alex could be forced to call upon youngsters such as Phil Bardsley or Gerard Pique for what is a crucial game. Adding to Ferguson?s woes is the absence of club captain Roy Keane, whose broken foot seems likely to keep him out of action for two months. This places extra responsibility on a seemingly out of sorts Paul Scholes in midfield, with Alan Smith still settling into the role and Darren Fletcher flitting in and out of the side recently. Rooney?s absence will probably mean a start for either South Korean midfielder Park Ji-Sung, or the return to the first eleven of Ryan Giggs. Giggs has been out of favour for much of this season, but United?s recent jitters could see Ferguson turn to his experienced winger on a night when a morale boosting win is something approaching a must… For the visitors, the danger man will be Nuno Gomes. The Portuguese international has netted five times in six Champions League outings so far this season and could prove to be a boil on the backside of United?s makeshift defence. In midfield, look out for an industrious performance from Giorgios Karagounis, who helped Greece to Euro 2004 glory, ironically on Portuguese soil. Historically, Manchester United have a definite edge over their Portuguese opponents, having beaten them three times out of three in European competition. The most famous of these came in 1968 when United held off Benfica and Eusebio in the European Cup Final at Wembley. A George Best-inspired United grabbed a 4-1 extra time victory, and a place in English football history as the first team from this country to win the competition. Benfica, who opened their Champions League Group D campaign with a 1-0 win over Lille thanks to a last-minute winner from Miccoli, have a poor record against English clubs in European competition.

Intralot CEO, Konstantinos Antonopoulos said the results are not comparable with last year’s figures when revenues of Stihima — the company’s main betting game — were boosted by the Euro 2004 football tournament in which Greece triumphed. According to Marfin Analysis, the company benefited from the first time consolidation of the fast-growing Turkish operations and full-year of Malta operations. On the negative side, Stihima revenues posted a 32 pct decline for the period… Intralot CEO, Konstantinos Antonopoulos said the results are not comparable with last year’s figures when revenues of Stihima — the company’s main betting game — were boosted by the Euro 2004 football tournament in which Greece triumphed. “We want to get in to the group stages of the UEFA Cup because it would be a fantastic adventure for the players. It was the same for me at Ipswich when we got into the Premiership. “As a player, you are not really thinking about the money, you just want to play against the top sides. In the Premiership that’s Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in the UEFA Cup it’s whoever we are drawn against if we get through. ” With the first leg at Easter Road having delivered a 0-0 scoreline two weeks ago, Hibs require only a scoring draw against Dnipro to take them into the lucrative sections from which they would be expected to make in excess of £1million. Despite hardly having spent a penny in over a year with Hibs, Mowbray was adamant that he did not intend on taking Hibs through simply because of the bounty that might await them. “As a manager, I don’t think I’m going to get handed £1m if we do get through… We have to show them that is not quite the case. “With them being the home side the onus will be on them to come out and try and score early, so our back line and midfield will have to be fully concentrated and we are confident enough that we can get a goal of our own. ” The referee in charge of the make-or-break tie in Dnipropetrovsk will be the often over-fussy Austrian Fritz Stuchlik, who was accused of causing irreparable damage to Scotland’s Euro 2004 qualifying campaign two years ago. Stuchlik’s awarding of a disputed penalty to Lithuania in April 2003 condemned the Scots, then under Berti Vogts, to a 1-0 defeat and jeopardised our chances of securing the second qualifying place for Portugal.

Connolly (28), who joined Premiership newcomers Wigan from Leicester during the summer, has not featured for Ireland since September 2003 when Koebi Kuhn’s Swiss side ended Brian Kerr’s side hopes of qualifying for Euro 2004. With Clinton Morrison suspended for the game in Nicosia on October 8th, the former Leicester and West Ham striker is seen as Stephen Elliott’s competition for the vacant spot alongside Robbie Keane. “David has made a bright start to the season,” said Kerr. “He is a very experienced striker by our standards (he has scored nine goals in 40 appearances). He has always been in my thoughts but I just felt last season that Stephen (Elliott) had passed him out.

Holland prosper with Van Basten
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 4, 2005
Should Marco van Basten’s team beat the Czech Republic on Saturday, David Beckham & Co could qualify for the World Cup finals even if they only draw against Poland next week. Van Basten, the three-times European Footballer of the Year, has “revolutionised our squad”, according to Ruud van Nistelrooy, who worshipped Van Basten during his glory days for AC Milan and now revels in the opportunity to play under his hero. Even though Dick Advocaat guided the Oranje to the semi-finals of Euro 2004, the campaign was undermined by the usual bouts of Dutch bickering. “There was a lot of compromising, which is not a word in Van Basten’s dictionary,” Van Nistelrooy said. “Before we had an XI of world stars. Now the manager simply picks the best man for the job. You wouldn’t even know some of them… Van Basten, the three-times European Footballer of the Year, has “revolutionised our squad”, according to Ruud van Nistelrooy, who worshipped Van Basten during his glory days for AC Milan and now revels in the opportunity to play under his hero. Knee injury may sideline Beltrame

A recurring knee injury could force Adelaide United keeper Daniel Beltrame out of this weekend’s A-League away match against New Zealand. Beltrame missed last night’s 1-1 draw against the Central Coast Mariners through suspension and Adelaide coach John Kosmina said Beltrame would be closely monitored this week. “He’s not suspended anymore but he’s had a problem with a knee injury that blew up in the Perth match,” Kosmina said. “We’ll have a look at how he goes this week but I was quite happy with [replacement keeper] Robbie Bayich last night – he did more than enough to keep his spot.
