Dailly sets sights on next campaign
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Nov 12, 2005
Such things are a touch brash for a boy who prefers spending his summer at the Glastonbury festival, but hearing his name read out at Hampden Park today will be the sweetest music of all for the Scotland player. The West Ham United player will make his 60th appearance and will mark it by captaining his country in the friendly encounter. It is a landmark Dailly could not have envisaged seven years ago in Washington DC when put in a tireless shift against the US in a bid to catch Craig Brown’s eye ahead of the 1998 World Cup finals. “What I remember is that it was very hot and that I was dehydrated running up and down the wing all day as a wing-back,” he said. “I also recall getting the Most Valuable Player award, which was nice but a bit embarrassing. We went to the US ahead of France ’98 to play a couple of top-class friendlies, against the Americans themselves, which we drew 0-0, and against Colombia in the Giants Stadium in New York, which is something I will treasure. ” It pains Dailly that he and Scotland are not going to next summer’s finals in Germany, but he has had a month to let that fact seep into his mindset and will be using the memory of missing out on the 2006 World Cup finals to drive him and Scotland on for Euro 2008, the qualifying matches for which begin next September… It will be a proud moment making my 60th appearance for my country. I remember my 50th, against Holland in the Euro 2004 play-off. We all feel we can get to the next finals, at Euro 2008, and the team is being built with that in mind. “I felt Walter was a good appointment at the time he took over from Berti Vogts and that has been confirmed by what we have done under him. ” “Friendlies”, of course, became a dirty word in the Vogts era, with 13 defeats in 18 non-competitive matches, but Dailly defends the former Scotland manager. “The younger guys who are now part of Walter’s squad all got their first caps under Berti,” he said. “If he had not put them in that would not have happened.

” His team-mate was Craig Gordon left to ponder the reason why: “They started very well and kept us on the back foot,” he said. “We seem to go into games waiting for something to happen instead of starting the way we finished the last 20 minutes or so of the first half. I’m not sure why that happens and the manager can’t put his finger on it either. “It’s difficult to say why we only play once something happens rather than starting from the first whistle. We have a couple of friendlies coming up, with the next at home, so hopefully we can sort that out in those games.

BBC News – Nov 11, 2005
“When the draw comes out in January for the Euro 2008 qualifiers, we will be involved with teams like this,” said Wales manager Toshack. “England, France, Italy – those games will take care of themselves. “But there are hidden difficulties in games against teams like Cyprus. They are not as easy as people think. ”

Everton boss David Moyes had questioned the wisdom of arranging a friendly against Cyprus, who are ranked 30 places below Wales by Fifa… “We now do not have another game until March, so if we hadn’t decided to play in Cyprus it would have been almost six months between matches for us. “I will now have the chance to look at maybe 26 or so players in two matches in Cyprus. “I do understand how club managers feel – I was one myself once – but I am an international manager now and these games are important. ”

He added: “I have worked in six different countries, and sometimes I have had 15 players away at one time. “But I have never known anywhere like this where managers complain so much.

Venables sizes up Ireland job
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 15, 2005
While no official approach has yet been made, the FAI will be aware that Venables is the biggest name they could realistically expect to appoint to lead Ireland in the Euro 2008 qualifiers while the former England manager would raise the profile of Irish football in the manner that Jack Charlton eventually did. Venables believes he could combine the Ireland job with the setting up of a leisure complex in Spain he is involved in, while at the age of 62 the ambition to return to the international stage – he has also managed Australia – still burns. As Ireland’s players are based mainly in England, living in London, plus regular trips to Spain, would not be a disadvantage – Jurgen Klinsmann, the Germany coach, is based in Los Angeles and makes two trips to Europe each month to watch Bundesliga games while PSV Eindhoven’s Guus Hiddink is in charge of Australia… While no official approach has yet been made, the FAI will be aware that Venables is the biggest name they could realistically expect to appoint to lead Ireland in the Euro 2008 qualifiers while the former England manager would raise the profile of Irish football in the manner that Jack Charlton eventually did. I don’t think [playing the second leg away is a disadvantage] as plenty of my players feature in the top European leagues and are used to playing away games in front of big crowds. ”
Youthful exuberanceThis Swiss side has a youthful complexion, as Kuhn points out. “Thanks to the work of the federation, the youngsters are confident, they haven’t got any complexes but are still modest, which makes it nice to work with them,” said Kuhn, who recently extended his contract until UEFA EURO 2008™ – when the current crop of youngsters should be close to their peak. “We are a step further forward than we had expected at this stage. ”
Turkey troublesTurkey coach Fatih Terim has a number of injury worries ahead of Saturday’s first leg. Midfielder Yıldıray Baştürk and defender Tolga Seyhan have been restricted to jogging in training, while forward Hasan Şaş might miss out altogether – despite four painkilling injections – due to a serious waist injury. He has been sent to Milan for tests to determine whether he can play… In such games every goal scored has an importance. There are no second chances with this game. I do not want my players getting unnecessary bookings but I don’t want them playing like cowards either because if they don’t make the necessary tackles, they won’t be playing in the return. Scotland 1 USA 1: Late flourish offers Scotland a reason for hope
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Nov 13, 2005
Used on article pages to rotate the images of a story. James McFadden nutmegged James Conrad and then sent a spinning chip in to Scott Brown, who smashed the opportunity emphatically into the net. Before the home support could celebrate this combination of two cheeky boys, a killjoy Spanish linesman had his flag in the air having noted, correctly, that Brown had strayed marginally offside. This upbeat end came in contrast to another slow start from Scotland which brought to mind their disappointing performance against Belarus last month. Despite a pre-match reminder of this from Smith, his players were sleepy in falling behind after just eight minutes, failing to heed early signs of sloppiness in their play… “We used to produce players of that ilk,” noted Smith wistfully afterwards when complimenting the PSV Eindhoven player. Craig Gordon had to make a good save from a Gregg Berhalter free-kick after Graham Alexander bundled Steve Cherundolo over on the edge of Scotland’s box following a burst of quick passes through midfield by the Americans. You would not have known that Bruce Arena, the visiting coach, was relying on rookies with seven first-choices — including Claudio Reyna, Landon Donovan, Brian McBride and John O’Brien — missing. “We looked at a lot of new faces and it was a very positive performance,” said Arena. Having used 42 players in topping the Concacaf qualifying section ahead of Mexico and Costa Rica, the coach was starting the process of sifting through a list of contenders before finalising his squad for what will be the US’s fifth consecutive appearance at the World Cup finals next summer. In contrast to the visitors, Scotland only had a couple of call-offs from Barry Ferguson and Lee McCulloch to contend with, a testimony to the spirit Smith has re-established, but fumbled their way forward with Garry O’Connor looking forlorn as a lone forward despite the attempts of Darren Fletcher and Neil McCann to get closer to him from a midfield into which Smith had packed six players. The home side’s equaliser was something of a surprise when it arrived on 37 minutes.

Rehhagel stays with Greece
World Soccer – Nov 14, 2005
Rehhagel guided Greece to an unexpected Euro 2004 triumph but he could not repeat the trick in the World Cup qualifying campaign as Greece finished fourth in a tough group containing Ukraine, Turkey and Denmark. Rehhagel, Greece coach for four years, said he would not have made any other decision as "his heart is in Greece". "Now we must defend our European title," he added. Rehhagel’s contract has an option for another six months to June 2008 should Greece qualify for Euro 2008. "It’s a happy day for Greek soccer, we should celebrate," said Bolton midfielder Stelios Yiannakopoulos. "He is the man who brought us to the top and he is the most capable for continuing the effort… Rehhagel, Greece coach for four years, said he would not have made any other decision as "his heart is in Greece". Edinburgh Evening News – Nov 14, 2005
We have to accept it. Sometimes it happens in football. Not everyday is the same day. We now have to prepare ourselves for the second match and in that way it’s still what I said before this game, which is that both teams have a 50 per cent possibility. This 50 per cent from our side is still there. ” In the other inter-continental play-off, Australia went down 1-0 to Uruguay in Montevideo and also consequently remain with a fighting chance of participating in Germany next summer. Uruguay’s Dario Rodriguez got the crucial goal after 35 minutes but Australia’s Mark Viduka in particular proved a handful for the home defence throughout the match, and coach Guus Hiddink was ultimately disappointed not to make more of the opportunities created by his presence.

Edinburgh Evening News – Nov 14, 2005
One footsoldier sitting behind us took things a little far. “Ring-a-ding-a-ding, we’ve got Jamesie on the wing. ” Get those policemen over here, this guy’s not safe to be around. Scotland could have snatched a victory with an increasingly Edinburgh tint to it had Scott Brown’s late strike not been denied for offside, and upon the final whistle Dylan gave his objective assessment. “Scotland were unlucky, weren’t they Daddy?” You’ll find yourself muttering those words rather often through life, son. Walter’s no softie when it comes to defending Scotland’s right to footballing independenceMUST say I’m steadfastly behind Walter Smith on this ridiculous suggestion that Scotland should conform to plans for a unified British football side for the 2012 Olympic Games. Can you imagine how a Team GB line-up would read? “Right lads,” says coach Terry Venables [tell me it wouldn’t be somebody like him].

Edinburgh Evening News – Sport – Rix’s recruits
Edinburgh Evening News – Nov 14, 2005
“I’ve mentioned one or two players to Mr Romanov as regards the January transfer window but I’m really not even thinking about that at the moment,” he said. “I need time to get my feet under the table and get to know my players and staff. ” That will happen this week as the ex-Oxford United and Portsmouth boss returns to the training ground at Riccarton having spent the last few days back at home on the south coast of England, happy to be out of the spotlight following his controversial appointment last week. The first-team squad report back tomorrow after the international break, with the focus firmly trained on Sunday’s trip to Pittodrie. “It is going to be a tough match for us but hopefully we’ll have everyone available and the guys will come back unscathed after the weekend,” said Rix.

” But it was the 27-year-old’s prowess in front of goal that caused the most havoc, as he racked up a sumptuous three-goal haul in only his second start for Spain as he continues to make a seamless transition to the international stage. Unbeaten run”Things are working out for me,” was Luis García’s succinct assessment of his own performance, but could as easily be ascribed to the team as a whole. Yesterday’s win left Spain unbeaten in eleven qualifying matches, although that form is not enough to make Aragonés complacent about the second leg in Slovakia on Wednesday: “It’s football, so you can’t say we’re definitely in the World Cup”. Vicente Calderón charmWere the return to be held at the Vicente Calderón stadium again, there would surely be no doubt. The home of Club Atlético de Madrid is a formidable place for opposing teams to visit and has become a bastion of Spanish strength since it first staged an international in 1972. On that day the home side coasted to a 2-0 win against Uruguay and, six games later, the tally stands at six wins, one draw, and no losses.

We’re going to combine that with a pivot and then we’re going to move it over with a step. So I do a grapevine and step and pivot, a grapevine, step and pivot. It’s an odd count so I’m going to have to add something to it; I’m going to take that over the bench. So grapevine step down and pivot, grapevine step down a grapevine just means you are moving the foot behind you kind of from grape dancing.
