With a New World Cup Inevitably Comes a New Ball
New York Sun – Dec 20, 2005
and I have a problem. Not with the Teamgeist, which I am confident will perform as reliably as Adidas says it will. My problem is with the blurb, with the scientific – though I’m convinced that most of it is pseudo-scientific – overkill that always accompanies the birth of a new ball. That a new ball is going to be “better” than its predecessors seems quite likely, given the rapid rate of technological advances. But how does one prove that?In 2000, Nike came up with the GeoMerlin ball for use in the English Premier League, a 32-panel ball that, it was claimed, retained its “roundness” under all conditions. Very likely it did, but in that same year another manufacturer, Penalty, produced a ball called the World Stability for use in the Argentine league.

24 JanuaryUEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson says 2005 will not see European football’s governing body resting on its laurels. Mr Olsson emphasises that a wide array of activities remain on UEFA’s agenda. “The year that has just got under way is not going to see the excitement of an event on the scale of [UEFA] EURO 2004™,” says the UEFA CEO, “but nor will it simply be a period of transition between the tournament in Portugal and next year’s World Cup finals in Germany. On the field of play, as well as behind the scenes, the months ahead will be anything but quiet,” he continues. “No fewer than 13 UEFA champions will be crowned in 2005, And by the end of the year, the World Cup qualifiers will have reached their conclusion. EURO 2004™ may still be fresh in our minds, but UEFA EURO 2008™ is already under preparation. 2005 is not going to be an idle year, far from it!”25 JanuaryUEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson is convinced that the summer’s UEFA European Women’s Championship final round will play a fundamental role in raising the profile of the women’s game throughout Europe.

? Zidane, who grabbed two of the goals when France beat Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 World Cup final, endured a nightmare 2002 finals where Les Bleus were knocked out at the first round stage. He was injured and missed the embarrassing defeat to Senegal as well as the draw with Uruguay returning to play a minor role in France?s last group game against Denmark. Despite retiring after Euro 2004, Zidane is back and insists the key to success in Germany next summer lies in concentrating on the team?s strengths and not worrying about Switzerland, South Korea or Togo, their scheduled first round opponents. ?The important thing is how we prepare, how we are going to do at the World Cup,? Zidane told his official website www. ?We can?t worry about the other teams.

LIVERPOOL FC: STEVIE REFLECTS ON AN AMAZING YEAR

Everything went through my mind at the time. I looked at players who had moved on and been successful and players who had stayed at the one club and been successful. I was thinking about my future non-stop through Euro 2004 and then it happened again the following summer. But it wasn’t a case of thinking that I had to move on to be successful. I always knew that, if I was to stay, I could be successful here… I have given 100 per cent from day one and I will continue to do that. It wasn’t as though the club had paid ?15m or ?20m for me and then I wanted to leave after a few seasons. I knew there was a small percentage of fans who were not happy when I stayed but I never felt as though I owed them anything. I just had to get back to giving everything for the shirt again.

Hungary prepare to cut Wembley ribbon
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 21, 2005
“The English association has invited Hungary for the opening international game of the new Wembley,” Imre Bozóky, the head of the Hungarian FA, said last night, although there has yet to be confirmation from England. England are also expected to play Uruguay, at Anfield on March 1, and Jamaica on June 3 in their final match before flying to Germany, where Eriksson believes that Wayne Rooney may be the key to England’s success. He said that the young forward will improve on his impressive performances at Euro 2004. “The impact he will have in Germany will be even bigger,” Eriksson said on ESPNsoccernet. The England head coach said that he was “never” afraid of losing his job, despite recent criticism, and added that he will not change his management style to please his detractors. “I am like I am, and if inspiring players is standing on the touchline and shouting, I will not do that because I am not that kind of character,” he said… Going to a World Cup, if you do not have inspiration for that, you should not be there. ” The Swede thinks that the England team are far better now than during the 2002 World Cup finals. “Stronger, much stronger I would say, more experienced,” he said. “And since I came to this country five years ago, the team has never been as strong as it is now.

Charisteas link denied

Wednesday Dec 21 2005 11:40
Ajax striker Angelos Charisteas will not be joining Sunderland in January, according to the Greek player’s agent. The forward, who scored the winner for his country in the Euro 2004 final, has been linked as a possible target for Mick McCarthy as the Black Cats boss desperately looks to bolster his squad. Sunderland have scored just 14 league goals this season, with McCarthy trying Stephen Elliott, Andy Gray, Jon Stead and Anthony Le Tallec up front in an attempt to find the net on a more regular basis. There were reports suggesting that a loan deal for Charisteas could be in the offing, but it appears the Greek ace is willing to stay and fight for his place with Ajax, who are still in the Champions League. The player’s representative, Paul Koutsoliakos, told Sky Sports: “Angelos’ contract with Ajax expires on June 30, 2008 and he is very happy in Amsterdam… shtml’>Archived News

Its shares are down six cents. The Perth-based construction giant said it was aiming to begin a progressive handover of the project in January, with the bulk of the work expected to be completed by late March. “Some works that are not critical to delivering the operational status of the stadium continue past this date, but still permit the FA Cup final to be played on May 13, 2006,” Multiplex said in a statement. “There remains a material risk that these dates will not be achieved and the stadium will not be available for the FA Cup final. ”

On Monday the company issued a profit warning over cost blowouts with the redevelopment of Wembley stadium. Multiplex said its 2006 profit was likely to be A$165 million below what it had forecast… The Perth-based construction giant said it was aiming to begin a progressive handover of the project in January, with the bulk of the work expected to be completed by late March. ”

However the groups are already cashing in on last Friday’s announcement of the World Cup draw. According to the group, the announcement triggered a surge in the production of fake shirts and merchandise which for Euro 2004 sold in markets, boot sales and pubs for about £10 or £15 not much less than the genuine article. Ruth Orchard, director general of ACG, which, has its secretariat in High Wycombe, said: “Consumers need to appreciate the wider impact of fakes on our society. “Legitimate traders are hit when fakes undercut their markets, and the black market each year is worth around £9billion, on which the unpaid VAT alone would fund several new schools and hospitals. “There are proven links between counterfeiting and other serious organised crime. “In the last five years or so, major criminals have taken control of the global trade in fakes, and use the profits to fund their other activities, such as drugs, guns and people-smuggling.

I hate to give anything to ISIS, but their knife game is on point. The organization is often brushed off as savage, brutal madmen, but they’re also savvy observers of Western culture. It’s no revelation that the NFL is already omnipresent in American lives, a fact that Goodell and his Merry Band of Owners seem intent on taking to the next level, force feeding a Thursday night game on America, when the only decent ratings haven’t really showed a clamoring need for it, a proposed 18 game season, and now, once again raising the issue of having a cheap fake oakleys team overseas, which is just about as good an idea as it was to expand the league to Jacksonville.Since the mid 1970s, the Jets have been in the cheap nfl jerseys shadow of the more corporate savvy and multiple title winning New York Giants.
