“The only way you can change opinions is by getting results,” said Cascarino. “He’ll get at least one qualifying campaign – but he’s certainly got to qualify for Euro 2008 or the 2010 World Cup. ”

Houghton added: “If he’s bringing in younger players, they may not be ready for Euro 2008. As a manager, you’re judged on results and if we’re coming bottom of the group, there are going to be problems.

He did not pretend to know Stan well, and cynics may suggest that he may not know him at all in a week, but he knows how to win over an audience in a way Staunton does not. He too spoke of the “history” that was failure in qualification for Germany 2006.   He oozed honesty in reassurances such as his insistence that he did not covet his neighbour’s job.   He acknowledged the difficulty of tackling qualification for Euro 2008 as fourth seeds, but said he will give the manager “everything he has got” to succeed. Both spoke of casting the net wider in the search for players and untapped talent.   The “granny rule” is definitely on the agenda ,and it will mean a knock on the door, from Robson probably, of Bolton captain Kevin Nolan.   Stephen Carr will be getting a call too, despite announcing his retirement before his thirties… He too spoke of the “history” that was failure in qualification for Germany 2006.   He oozed honesty in reassurances such as his insistence that he did not covet his neighbour’s job.   He acknowledged the difficulty of tackling qualification for Euro 2008 as fourth seeds, but said he will give the manager “everything he has got” to succeed. Eriksson out after World Cup

The candidates could include Guus Hiddink, Stuart Pearce and Martin O’Neill. The paper quoted Eriksson as claiming that corruption stained the upper echelons of English league football, an allegation that has incensed the Premier League… The paper quoted Eriksson as claiming that corruption stained the upper echelons of English league football, an allegation that has incensed the Premier League. Eriksson is also scheduled to see the FA’s chief executive, Brian Barwick, who has decided to get tough. By clarifying the Swede’s future now, the FA can begin their search for the man to lead England into the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Barwick yesterday summoned Athol Still, Eriksson’s agent, to Soho Square. The FA later released a statement saying: “Further to today’s allegations in the News of the World concerning Sven-Goran Eriksson, the FA have requested from the newspaper details of all the conversations which are alleged to have taken place with an undercover reporter in Dubai.

Makelele ready to scrap
Ireland Online – Jan 10, 2006
Villa preserved their own unbeaten start to the season thanks to an equaliser from Gabriel Agbonlahor after Didier Drogba was credited with opening the scoring with a scrappy goal for Chelsea after just three minutes. Chelsea dominated the game but could not find the right opening to secure all three points and were frustrated further by a superb display from Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen. He kept the champions at bay with a string of fine saves and Chelsea?s misery was compounded when substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips hit the crossbar from close range late in the second half. Coach Jose Mourinho maintained that his Villa counterpart Martin O?Neill had set out to get a point from the encounter and Makelele knows they will face more of the same from teams determined to get something from a visit to Stamford Bridge. Makelele, who has now vowed to carry on playing at international level until the end of the Euro 2008 qualifiers, says they must accept life in both the Barclays Premiership and the Champions League will be harder this season. Makelele said: ?Chelsea need to keep winning and to work better in our new system and with our new players… He kept the champions at bay with a string of fine saves and Chelsea?s misery was compounded when substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips hit the crossbar from close range late in the second half. This time, it’s about passion
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Jan 15, 2006
Already, there has never been such a negative reaction to the appointment of an Ireland manager since the appointment of Jack Charlton back in 1986. Perhaps most scathing of all was Mark Lawrenson in The Irish Times, who said that Staunton could not be compared to the likes of Marco Van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, or even Rudi Völler or Jürgen Klinsmann, all appointed to major managerial jobs when they had little or no experience. But why not? Nobody questioned John Giles’s qualifications for the job when he was appointed in 1973, while still playing for Leeds United and his six-year tenure was regarded as a qualified success. The Ireland job now is much bigger, but the essence remains the same. Giles was a great player who turned out to be a good manager. The hope, and it is difficult to put it stronger than this, is that Staunton will be remembered as a good player who turned out to be a great manager… Kevin MacDonald is a highly regarded coach, who was considered for more senior roles before David O’Leary consigned him to the reserves at Aston Villa. Bobby Robson is still a slightly more complicated matter. One of his first jobs will be to advise Staunton when the qualifiers for Euro 2008 are decided later this month. After that, the book is wide open, but it appears that Robson may well have a role in the dugout rather than up in the stands on match day. One thing is clear: Staunton is the man in charge and he has a fighting chance of restoring success. Now let him take it.

The News of the World, of course, have had a field day with their story, which occupies the first seven pages of today’s paper. The banner headline on the front: “Sven’s Dirty Deals — £15m to quit England and he’ll tap up Becks”, is every tabloid editor’s dream. Inside, Eriksson is unbelievably indiscreet about his best players — not only David Beckham, but Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. He says Owen is “not really happy” at Newcastle, “but they paid more than Real Madrid did”. Moving on to Rooney, the England coach will have done his relationship with his best player the sort of harm that could prove to be irreparable by criticising his parents. Asked by Mahmood: “What’s Rooney like”, he replied: “It is his temper. He’s coming from a poor family, very rough.

Man City 3 Man Utd 1: City romp to victory on derby day-Sport…
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Jan 15, 2006
Having sanctioned the investment of another £12. 5m in their Manchester United portfolio in midweek, the club’s absentee owners would not have enjoyed this shoddy performance, let alone the result. Not only have United ceased to be predominant in English football, they are no longer top dogs in their own back yard. City, who drew 1-1 at Old Trafford in September, fully deserved yesterday’s success, which was from the same rich vein as their 4-1 victory in the corresponding fixture last season. After a Christmas slump, during which they were beaten by West Brom, Wigan, Chelsea and Spurs, the City team Stuart Pearce has constructed in his own combative image were back with a bang, spikily assertive in all areas. United made much of the fact that they were down to 10 men from midway through the second half, when Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for an ugly challenge, but by that time their local rivals were leading 2-0 and already set fair for a victory which has renewed their hopes of European qualification. Talking of Europe, Sir Alex Ferguson and his team are left further adrift than ever in Chelsea’s wake, clinging precariously to second place in the table, where they are vulnerable to Liverpool’s powerful resurgence.

“Football’s the only thing that unites the country,” said LuaLua. “That’s why I have to go to Egypt. ” You would not expect David Beckham to miss the European Championships if they clashed with a few Real Madrid games and in fairness to Portsmouth and the club’s manager, Harry Redknapp, he goes with his employers’ blessing after cutting a deal to remain at his club until after yesterday’s match against Everton. Sitting on this morning’s flight to Tunis, he will be nagged by the feeling that he cannot win.
