The Tees Mouth
BBC News – Feb 3, 2006
These clubs don’t have players who are lazy, pampered, difficult to motivate millionaires. Their lads can’t believe their luck they’re still in the Premiership and are enjoying themselves. Definitely not Robson for the England job. Jewell’s OK, but why would he want to put himself through that when he’s perfectly happy where he is?

I think it’s got to be somebody who’s been around the block a bit, probably a European. Apparently Eriksson stood up in the middle of a restaurant the other day and said it’s going to be Hiddink who gets his job, which I find unbelievable… Because, believe it or not, I’m English, Christopher. I can’t help it, I’d love to be unbiased – but I’m not. And funnily enough, a lot of the Scottish fans I know are rather biased towards Scotland.

And you can guarantee he’ll be given a warm Scouse welcome by the Kop. I’m not normally a betting man, but let’s just say I’m confident I’ll have two houses come February 19. Then there’s the battle of the chairmen at St James’ Park. and don’t rule out Boro!

Someone always stumbles into the semis – we might just stagger there ourselves… Still, whoever gets the job won’t be too concerned by who England have got, although the air miles’ll be stacking up. No, it’s Scotland’s draw that made you want to cry (and yes I laughed too). France and Italy are bad enough, but the Faroe Islands.

Speaking in the uefa. com chatroom, the German tactician said: “There are no easy games anymore. The so-called minnows don’t exist. Therefore, even in this group, I don’t think there will be any games that we can just presume we will win – it will be tough.

Far bigger than any basketball game or tennis match. Israel against England in soccer is as big as it gets regarding world-class sport taking place in Israel. Drawn together in the same qualifying group for Euro 2008, Israel will take on the 1966 World Cup winners for the first time in a competitive game. The likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard will bring with them huge hype which will resemble something of a circus. Wherever the English side plays, a huge traveling sideshow accompanies them, namely their fans and the media. Expect Ramat Gan stadium to be littered with the cross of St. George and plenty of other Anglo related flags and banners… The franchise has a great pedigree and is trying to become just the third team to win five Super Bowls. The Seahawks have no such history of their own, just one of mediocrity. That is not to say that 30 years of miserable football should prevent them from being successful in Detroit. Whoever wins will be a worthy champion. Likewise there could be no more worthier champion than Roger Federer. With victory in the Australian Open the Swiss maestro joins the likes of Rene Lacoste, John Newcombe, John McEnroe and Mats Wilander with seven Grand Slam titles to his credit. He is well on the way to matching the record 14 set by Pete Sampras.

Sanchez wants points on the board
BBC News – Feb 1, 2006
“Latvia, Iceland or Liechtenstein would be nice and I don’t really mind if it is home or away,” said the NI boss. “Obviously I would like to play one of the early games at home and we want to get some early points on the board. ”

“We lost 3-0 at home to Poland in our first qualifier last time and I don’t want that situation arising again. ”

Sanchez told BBC NI’s Season Ticket programme that it would be nice to have drawn the Republic of Ireland or one of the Home Nations in the draw but he is pleased that his squad will not have too far to travel… “Obviously I would like to play one of the early games at home and we want to get some early points on the board. ”

Sanchez told BBC NI’s Season Ticket programme that it would be nice to have drawn the Republic of Ireland or one of the Home Nations in the draw but he is pleased that his squad will not have too far to travel. “Most places are within three hours travelling time and that is good for both the team and the fans. “We know the countries we are going to will have good facilities, good pitches and we will be well supported so those are all plus points. ”

The former Wimbledon player also indicated his support for the construction of a national stadium as a matter of urgency. “We need a stadium we can go to with pride and get more than 14,000 people into.

Czech draw for Euro 2008 tough, says Smicer. But whatever happens at the World Cup, the Czechs know they willhave quite a difficult task qualifying for the next EuropeanChampionships, which take place in Switzerland and Austria in 2008… Galasek, who is 33, has been at the great Dutch club for sixyears. Inter Milan keen to buy Czech teenager Jan Polak could be going to Italian giants Inter Milan. But not the Czechinternational and Nuremberg midfielder Jan Polak – they’re interested inhis 16-year-old namesake, who is at Liberec but has yet to make a Czechleague appearance. If Inter do sign the promising youngster, Polak islikely to remain at Liberec on loan. Czech Damm loses in doubles final at Australian Open.

The game also highlighted the difference between this team and the last to record a victory in a Hampden friendly – under Craig Brown in March 1996. Brown’s players boasted a defensive record which was among the meanest in Europe and they had two tournament finals ahead of them, at Euro ’96 and France ’98. Ultimately, Brown was castigated for the predictability of his teams but Walter Smith could do with some of that consistency as he contemplates the rigours of the Euro 2008 qualifiers which begin in September. The three-man back line struggled repeatedly under pressure from the flanks, particularly on the left where Graham Alexander frequently found himself caught in no-man’s land. However, trouble was also identifiable further upfield, where Darren Fletcher was intermittent and Nigel Quashie anonymous. It would, though, be unfair to identify only a couple of players as culpable, because there was a general hangdog feel to the Scots. The brightest spot, once more, was Kenny Miller’s performance… It would, though, be unfair to identify only a couple of players as culpable, because there was a general hangdog feel to the Scots. The brightest spot, once more, was Kenny Miller’s performance. True, he could not convert a couple of decent chances, but his application is such that he now looks value for a goal in any encounter. Miller urgently needs others to take the weight off him and it would have been helpful to see Garry O’Connor alongside the Wolves man. O’Connor was unavailable and Smith chose to keep Shaun Maloney on the bench in the hope that the more experienced players might salvage something from the encounter. The Celtic forward, though, can surely expect to be put through his paces in the Kirin Cup in Japan in May as Smith runs out of time to exercise his options.

Israel to face England in Euro qualifiers
European Jewish Press – Jan 30, 2006
“It’s a pretty good draw. If you look at the six other groups, you can say it’s a reasonable draw, but definitely not an easy one. It’s a very attractive draw and the fans in Israel are in for a treat,” he added. Israel is an emerging force in world football and impressed during its qualification campaign for this summer’s world cup. The team just missed out despite gaining impressive draws both at home and away against Ireland, France and Switzerland. Some of the best Israeli players are now plying their trade in the English Premiership, with Yaniv Katan joining his fellow countryman Yossi Benayoun at West Ham United just a few weeks ago… The team just missed out despite gaining impressive draws both at home and away against Ireland, France and Switzerland. England’s Swedish coach Sven Goran Erikkson was in attendance at the draw in Switzerland on Friday, even though he has announced he will be leaving the post after the World Cup and not leading the team into the European Championship qualifiers. Erikkson said he believed whoever takes over from him will be satisfied with the group. “I think England should be happy with the draw. There are groups much more difficult than the England group, so I think it’s very good,” the England coach told Sky Sports.

Talking Football: Debate over venue calls for good sense of Miss Jean…
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 3, 2006
Hearts and Hibs meeting in the semis was another matter entirely, and the SFA knew it would be. No sooner had their names come out of the bowl together than Murrayfield volunteered its services and pundits were found to make the instant judgment that the game should be played there. It seems likely that the clubs could fill Murrayfield to its 68,000 capacity, a tremendous advertisement for the vigour of Scottish football without Celtic and Rangers, and the fans would not have to make a 100-mile return journey. In other words, say Murrayfield advocates, it is common sense. Nevertheless…Although Hearts declared their preference for Murrayfield, Hibs demurred. Officially, their stance is that Hampden had been nominated previously for the semi-finals, therefore Hampden it should be. In reality, Hibs have other misgivings… Murrayfield and Tynecastle are separated by only a few hundred yards and in the eyes of many Hibs fans they are twin arenas. Such dilemmas also perplex Uefa, whose member countries almost doubled with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the former Yugoslavia. Qualifying sections, such as those for Euro 2008, have mushroomed. Fixture schedules have become much tougher to arrange and easier to veto – as Russia have done in England’s group and the Ukraine in the Scottish section. The nevertheless in this case is that the reduction of competitive fixtures would mean an increase in friendly games – a situation which would intensify the animus of the G14 group of clubs against Uefa over the release of highly-paid players. The G14 group see themselves as the prima ballerinas. And as Miss Brodie observed: “It is the corps de ballet that has the team spirit.

Switzerland, World Cup finalists and co-hosts of Euro 2008, won comfortably with goals from Tranquillo Barnetta, Daniel Gygax and Ricardo Cabanas. Kenny Miller took his scoring total for Scotland to six with a fine strike after the break but the Scots’ decent touches were undermined by their profligacy around the Swiss penalty area. Ricardo Cabanas worked the width of the pitch to deliver a waist-high cross, which was met by Barnetta with a sweeping drive… Match detailsScotland (3-4-1-2): Gordon (Heart of Midlothian); G Caldwell (Hibernian), Weir (Everton), Webster (Heart of Midlothian); Dailly (West Ham Utd), Ferguson (Rangers), Quashie (West Bromwich Albion), G Alexander (Preston North End); Fletcher (Manchester United); McFadden (Everton), Miller (Wolverhampton Wanderers). I’m an understanding sort, you know, and one convert of sorts is considerable progress in my book. Whilst Rab usually has no hesitation in labelling me a “muppet” or “traitor” any time I mention life in the east, I always make sure he cops a fair portion of micky- taking himself. Well, you can’t be a boiler maintenance engineer in the Navy and not be likened to Uncle Albert, can you? As Saturday afternoon evolved, I realised there would be plenty to engross Rab through his fuzzy, snowy, portable TV picture in the deep south. A rather rampant scoreline for the home side, a controversial sending off and the unsavoury sight of missiles being launched at Paul Hartley after his penalty-spot third for Hearts. I can just hear Rab’s voice next time he rings. “Bunch a hooligans through there byrraway. Ye don’t get missiles bein’ flung in Glesga… What Walter is about to come up againstTRUST UEFA. Just when we are busily and innocently effecting the restoration of our credibility as a football nation under Walter Smith, and making a reasonable success of it too, they hit us with a task harder than that of a Lib Dems PR officer. Our group for the Euro 2008 draw reads like a miniature Who’s Who of European football, whilst our opponents probably asked “who’s that?” when they saw Scotland’s name beside them in Group B. France, Italy, Ukraine, Lithuania, Georgia. It wasn’t sufficient for us to be making quiet and modest progress from the dark days of Berti Vogts [shiver], UEFA had to ram the boot in and kick us downwards once more. Still, the Faroe Islands are in our group. We should be able to scrape a draw from them.
