Forget about Madrid (they have a lot to prove) but what’s wrong with Chelsea? The problem with Greece is that before and after the Euro 2004 triumph they showed nothing like European Champions or even world-beaters. Are Chelsea REALLY the same? I don’t think so. Chelsea are a multi-talented team with world class players throughout the team such as Cech, Terry, Gallas, Carvahlo, Makelele, Lampard, J Cole, Robben, Crespo, Ballack & now Shevchenko. I can’t think of a world class team (like Chelsea) who would NOT want some of these players in their team e.

Zizou confirms imminent swansong
Independent Online – Feb 16, 2006
Otherwise, afterwards, I would be left with regrets. ”

In January, Zidane told French television channel Canal+ that he wanted to finish the season and then focus on the World Cup before making any decisions on the next 12 months. Now he is keen to make up for France’s World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004 disasters. In the 2002 World Cup, France failed to make it out of the group stages when faced with Uruguay, Senegal and Denmark. ‘I am a little sad about it’With Zidane injured for their first two games and only a peripheral figure in their last, France failed to score a single goal and crashed out with two defeats and a draw. Two years on and they fell at the first knock-out hurdle when faced with eventual champions Greece. “We have a good team, but we said that as well in 2002 and 2004… Two years on and they fell at the first knock-out hurdle when faced with eventual champions Greece. “We have a good team, but we said that as well in 2002 and 2004. Therefore, we must not make the same mistakes,” he said. “We have to prepare well and be ready. The French team can be competitive if we all arrive at 100 percent. “In 2002, there were so many negative things that happened that in the end, on the field, it went the way it did. “Personally, I am a little sad about it, particularly 2004 because in 2004 we were well prepared.

Full MCG tipped for Greeks’ Socceroo send-off
The Age – Feb 10, 2006
The Greece game, on May 25, is the first of a four-match seriesagainst top opposition that has been pledged to Melbourne over thenext four years. In 2007, Australia will play a friendly against “one of theworld’s best football nations” in Melbourne. FFA chief executive John O’Neill said this would not necessarilybe against one of world soccer’s traditional European or SouthAmerican superpowers but it would be against a high-qualityteam. In 2008, Melbourne is guaranteed one of the Socceroos’qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa inwhat will be Australia’s first cup campaign since it moved toFIFA’s Asian confederation this year. And in 2009, Australia will play one of its final World Cupqualifiers in the city. This could either be a home-and-away clashthat could determine whether the Socceroos qualify directly forSouth Africa 2010 as one of the top four Asian countries or itcould be a play-off against a team from another region. (Asia now has 4½ World Cup spots… But Bracks made it clear that other venues, including the newrectangular stadium that will be home to Melbourne Victory andMelbourne Storm rugby league club from 2008, also would beconsidered for games in 2007-09. Socceroo boss Guus Hiddink will bring his strongest squad toplay in the match, while the Greek Football Association had givenassurances that it would bring out its strongest team. Although the Greeks stunned the soccer world with their shocktriumph in Euro 2004, they were unable to qualify for Germany 2006,losing out to Ukraine. The Greek Football Association has said it is treating the matchwith Australia as the start of preparations for its defence of itsEuropean crown. Its first qualifiers for the 2008 Europeanchampionship will be held soon after the World Cup finals. Asked whether he was concerned that there could be more fansbarracking for the opposition than the home team (as was the casewhen Australia played Turkey), Lowy brought cheers and laughs whenhe said: “I don’t care what flag they wave — let them allcome. The Socceroo squad for the coming Asian Cup qualifier againstBahrain will be named today and it is sure to contain severalunfamiliar names, including a healthy sprinkling of A-Leagueplayers.

Moyes considers suing Rooney – Feb 9, 2006
Moyes’ lawyer Mel Goldberg said: “Proceedings have been issued against the Daily Mail. Separate action will be taken against the publishers and presumably Wayne Rooney as well because he is the cause of the publication. “But at this minute legal proceedings against Wayne Rooney have not been issued. “No manager wants to lose his best player and that was far from the truth. “”There was a comment which we regard as very serious which is that David Moyes broke professional confidence by leaking stories which he had been told… “Matters are always begun by a writ but often they are settled before they get to court so it’s possible that this matter will be settled. But there’s no settlement been discussed. “Rooney left Everton for Manchester United for £30 million two years ago after breaking into the first team as a 16-year-old and impressing for England at Euro 2004.

Scolari: No contact with English FA
TVNZ – Feb 9, 2006
“I havehad no contact with the English federation,” he told journalists. “At times conclusions are drawn which are not connected to thetruth. In aninterview with the BBC on Monday, Scolari had said: “I know if Iwant to take over England I need to learn the language more. ‘BigPhil’, who led his native Brazil to their fifth World Cup title in2002, said learning English had nothing to do with wanting to trainEngland. “In theinterview, I said I wanted to learn English, just like I want tolearn other languages to become a more educated person,” Scolarisaid. “Justbecause I said I would learn English does not imply I have agreedanything with England… “Justbecause I said I would learn English does not imply I have agreedanything with England. “I alreadyrejected various invitations from many important clubs and I havealready said 180 times that I am very happy in Portugal. He said hewould only consider offers as of July when his contract withPortugal, beaten finalists at Euro 2004, runs out. Scolarihas repeatedly stated that he wants to stay with Portugal althoughthat could depend on how Portugal do in the World Cup, where hisambition is to reach at least the last eight.

Staunton backs Ireland to come good
Ireland Online – Feb 9, 2006
?Staunton brushed aside Lawrenson?s comments, saying: ?Everybody?s entitled to their own opinion. I’m delighted with the squad of players I?ve got. It?s not as if we can go out and buy anybody, so we’ll try to get the young players through as best and as quickly as we can. ?Please God, over the forthcoming years we?ll have a very strong squad, but we are a small nation and we can only do our best. ?We?ve been unlucky in certain qualifications, and it hasn?t been for the want of trying. I guess we?ve probably always punched above our weight over the years, and I?m sure the players will do the same again, and rise to the occasion. ?As for the pressure, of course there?s that, but then that?s what football is all about… ?As for the pressure, of course there?s that, but then that?s what football is all about. ?Ireland have qualified for just one of the last six European Championships since reaching Euro 88, when they famously beat England in Stuttgart. Failure to reach Euro 2004 and the World Cup this summer adds to the motivation. ?The players are very disappointed, along with every supporter in Ireland and myself,? assessed Staunton. ?We all want our country to do well, so there will be no lack of motivation tonight. The lads are highly motivated, eager and looking forward to the campaign. ?Clinton Morrison is a doubt with a sore back, while fellow striker Kevin Doyle should be available despite suffering tightness in his right leg in training yesterday.

Trapattoni axed as Stuttgart coach
CNN – Feb 10, 2006
They have scored only 21 goals this season, none in the last three games, and Trapattoni’s emphasis on defence after years of high-scoring Stuttgart teams attracted widespread criticism. "Giovanni Trapattoni is an absolute gentleman and one of the most successful trainers in the world," said president Erwin Staudt. "Nevertheless, his work with the team has not been as efficient and successful as we had hoped. " Trapattoni’s assistant Andreas Brehme, who also served as his translator, was also fired. The 66-year-old came under pressure in December but his team won two matches before the winter break. Their main target is a top-five finish to return to the UEFA Cup next season. They have reached the UEFA Cup’s group phase and face Middlesbrough next week… His first spell in Munich ended after one season in 1995 with complaints that he had difficulty with the language. He returned a year later, however, and led Bayern to the German title. He was appointed Italy coach in 2000 but the side failed to sparkle, losing to South Korea in the second round of the 2002 World Cup and failing to get past the group stage at Euro 2004.

England return twice rejected by Scholes – Feb 10, 2006
The England manager said he would not ask again, but insisted that the door was still open for the Manchester United midfielder. McClaren said: “I asked Paul if he would like to return. It was one of the first things I did before I named my first squad. “I asked him in the summer if he would reconsider and come back into the fold. He declined, and then declined again when I asked him last week… “I respect those decisions, and I don’t expect to be asking him again. “Scholes, who made 66 international appearances, won the last of his caps at Euro 2004 and missed much of last season with an eye problem. But the 31-year-old has returned to something approaching his best form this season. McClaren concluded: “The door is always open, I would never close it on Paul Scholes. “One player who is keen to return to the international fold is Jonathan Woodgate. The Real Madrid defender, on a season-long loan to Middlesbrough, impressed the watching McClaren during Boro’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United on Saturday.

WC ticket fiasco frustrates fans
Register – Feb 16, 2006
Note that people hunting for less popular games, such as those involving the Ivory Coast and Korea, are also having problems. FIFA reckons more tickets will become available thanks to returns and seat allocation changes, so all is not yet lost… But it’s a shame FIFA hasn’t taken into account lessons learned from the Glastonbury website ticket sales screw-up three years ago and the France ’98 phone ticket sales fiasco. Many games during the last world cup played to half empty grounds. In contrast, ticketing arrangements for Euro 2004 in Portugal went far more smoothly. ® Track this type of story as a.
