Hearts director takes parting shot
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 16, 2006
Varanavicius’ position became untenable when Scotland and Lithuania were drawn in the same Euro 2008 qualifying group and his decision to step down at Hearts is no surprise. He took the opportunity to make his feelings clear about several issues, including the likelihood of further eastern European investment in British football. “There is discussion and talk in eastern Europe about what Roman Abramovich has done at Chelsea and Vladimir Romanov at Hearts. I have picked up the vibe that there may be more Russians seeking to invest in British football, probably in the Premiership,” he said. “There may well be three or four more English Premiership clubs in Russian ownership in the future… Hearts have signed 23 players since the Russian-Lithuanian banker bought into the club in Oct 2004, 11 of whom arrived during the January transfer window. Seven players on the Tynecastle books are on loan from Kaunas, for periods varying from four months to 3½ years, but Varanavicius insisted that all the deals complied with football regulations. “Mr Romanov has not broken any rules in terms of ownership and Hearts have not broken rules about loan signings. “When it was pointed out that the latest Tynecastle crisis arose last week, when first-team coach Graham Rix told his squad he was not picking the team, Varanavicius replied: “Mr Romanov did not pick the team but there may have been communication problems. “Aside from the complexities of life at Tynecastle, Varanavicius is – in his role as president of the Lithuanian Football Federation – embroiled, with the SFA, in a dispute with the Ukrainian football authorities over the fixture list for the countries’ Euro 2008 qualifiers. Delegates from Scotland, Lithuania, France, Italy, Georgia and the Faroe Islands met last week in Paris to arrange the schedule but the Ukranians were absent and have since objected to the timetable agreed by the others, prompting the possibility that Uefa may have to to impose a computer-generated programme. Livingston have appointed John Robertson as their new manager.

BBC News – Feb 15, 2006
Scottish FA chief executive David Taylor fears Uefa will have to step in after Ukraine vetoed fixtures agreed by the other six teams in Group B. “The indications are that any additional proposals from Ukraine are not welcome,” he said. “The prospect of a draw is looming larger now. ”

Ukraine rejected the provisional list of fixtures agreed by the other six nations during two days of intensive talks in Paris last week.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Nyatanga called up to Wales…
BBC News – Feb 15, 2006
“Lewin has broken into the Derby team this season, I have seen him a few times and he is certainly one for the future,” said Wales manager John Toshack. “It’s been a bit difficult for him recently with the change of manager at Derby and he has been left out, but we have to give these youngsters a chance. “We know these lads are not really ready yet, but we have to get them into the squad now so that they will be ready when the Euro 2008 qualifiers come around. ”

“Garner did very well in Orient’s cup run. He saved a penalty against Fulham and was outstanding against Charlton. ”

Green, now with Hereford United, who made his senior Wales debut under Bobby Gould at the age of 17 years and 226 days, playing against Malta and Tunisia in 1998. But Nyatanga is on course to beat that record by 31 days if he takes the field against the South Americans in the friendly match in Cardiff.

Wenger: What I Really Said About Fixture Congestion
Goal.com – Feb 12, 2006
But he was unahppy at the way his comments were presented, and used his press conference ahead of the Spurs derby to clarify his views. “What I said and what has been made of it is completely different,” he said. I just said that it’s normal when you organise a championship that everybody plays on the same date. “Chelsea and Manchester United played [in midweek] yes but when did Tottenham play? You have to make sure that if one team plays three times in a week that everybody does. Some teams don’t play at all.

Barton redeems himself in City win
rte.ie – Feb 12, 2006
The effort allowed City to hold off a late rally from the visitors after Marcus Bent had pulled them back into a contest which erupted with four goals in 21 thrilling minutes at the start of the second period. And it gave Stuart Pearce valuable bragging rights in the battle of the home-grown contenders to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson as England boss. If Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick follows the demand of Sam Allardyce and chooses an Englishman to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2008 combat, it is a fair bet, for all the Bolton boss’ claims, one of two protagonists at Eastlands will be it. It is easy to see why both Pearce and Alan Curbishley would be an attractive proposition, yet the drawbacks are just as obvious. Were it possible to mix the pair’s plus points, Barwick would not have much of a choice to make. As it is, Pearce’s managerial inexperience and Curbishley’s lack of exposure to international combat, either as a player or during his time at Charlton, mean the red warning lights will continue to flash. There was little in the opening 45 minutes that offered a decent clue either way as to whom might be the best man for the job from this particular duo… If Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick follows the demand of Sam Allardyce and chooses an Englishman to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2008 combat, it is a fair bet, for all the Bolton boss’ claims, one of two protagonists at Eastlands will be it. The first half could best be described as cagey, with City supplying most of the sporadic attacking threat. A trawl through the record books takes you back to April 2005 for the last of Richard Dunne’s three previous strikes for City.

Le Guen confirms talks with Rangers
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 14, 2006
“I can confirm that negotiations have re-opened, but we are not at that point of signing a contract. “Roy Keane is seven appearances away from claiming a championship medal with Celtic following Sunday’s 1-0 Old Firm victory at Ibrox. “Our rules state that players must have played in 25 per cent of their club’s fixtures in order to earn a medal and, in a 38-game season, that works out at 10 appearances,” SPL spokesman Greg Mailer said. Hearts have appointed Jim Duffy as their director of football until the end of this season, when head coach Graham Rix’s contract also expires. Rix, who has dropped points in eight of 12 SPL matches since taking charge, will be discussed by the SFA’s general purposes committee tomorrow after East Fife chairman Derrick Brown queried whether the convicted sex offender was “a fit and proper person” to hold his post… Rix, who has dropped points in eight of 12 SPL matches since taking charge, will be discussed by the SFA’s general purposes committee tomorrow after East Fife chairman Derrick Brown queried whether the convicted sex offender was “a fit and proper person” to hold his post. The SFA have also asked Hearts’ owner Vladimir Romanov for details of his connections with Lithuanian champions FBK Kaunas and Minsk MTZ-RIPO of Belarus. The ruling body are further concerned that Liutauras Varanavicius, the president of the Football Federation of Lithuania, is a director of Hearts in spite of the fact his country have been drawn in the same Euro 2008 qualifying group as Scotland. St Mirren, who face Spartans in a Tennent’s Scottish Cup fourth-round replay at Love Street tonight, were yesterday fined £25,000 for including only one under-21 player, rather than the required two, when the clubs drew 0-0 on Feb 5.

Bellamy ready to lead young Wales
BBC News – Feb 11, 2006
Two, or possibly, three friendlies, will follow before the daunting opening game in the Euro 2008 qualifiers away against the Czech Republic. Germany and the Republic of Ireland will provide further stern tests, with plenty of points up for grabs against Slovakia, Cyprus and San Marino. Bellamy, though, believes Wales to do very well to get close to matching the second place they achieved in the last Euro campaign. “Every group is going to be tough, but the best thing you can hope for is to avoid having to travel to places like Azerbaijan and Armenia,” said Bellamy, who has scored nine goals in 33 caps… “Germany is a great game for us, and I love Ireland. If we don’t qualify then I hope they do. “Those are going to be great game to play in, and then obviously the Czech’s are a great nation that’s come on. “But it’s a different ball game [with Wales] now.

The German Football Association today announced that the match will take place in the 50,000-seater Gottlieb Daimler Stadium, the scene of Ireland’s memorable 1-0 victory over England at Euro ‘88. Ray Houghton may not be there to put the ball in the German net but manager Steve Staunton may be hoping that the venue smiles on Irish fortunes again. Staunton believes that the game will provide an early indication of the challenge that lies ahead. “It’s a massive test but it’s one I’m looking forward to,” he said. random()*10000000000000000;

Holders Greece start in Moldova
Turkish Daily News – Turkish Daily News (subscription) – Feb 18, 2006
Turkey satisfied: Representatives from title-holders Greece, Norway, Hungary, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Moldova and Malta gathered in Turkey, for whom Turkish Football Association president Haluk Ulusoy was chief delegate. He said: “We had decided on 35 of the 42 matches in the group but failed to agree on the final seven. Therefore all the countries involved decided to conduct a draw of our own, rather than wait for UEFA to do so. In the end we got what we wanted – 99 per cent of it is compatible with our wishes… We believe we can qualify, and have to show that desire on the pitch. ” Hungarian Football Federation general secretary S?ndor Berzi said: “It’s not our ideal programme but I don’t think we have a bad draw. ” UEFA deadline: The fixtures will not be ratified by UEFA until European football’s governing body receives a signed agreement from every team in the group. The deadline for this is Feb.

Beckham targets swansong at 2010 World Cup
go.com – Feb 20, 2006
‘I’ve been working hard and feel fitter than I’ve been for some time. Rightnow, I reckon I could play on at club and international level for a few years. ‘There’s the World Cup this summer, then Euro 2008. If I continue to feelgood, then maybe even another World Cup in South Africa. ‘If he does play on for another four years, Beckham would be certain to beatPeter Shilton’s record of 125 caps. He is currently in sixth place alongside Kenny Sansom and will become only thefifth player to reach the century mark, after Shilton, Bobby Moore (108), SirBobby Charlton (106) and Billy Wright (105). Beckham also insists he does not mind whether Sven-Goran Eriksson’s successoris English or a foreigner… ‘If he does play on for another four years, Beckham would be certain to beatPeter Shilton’s record of 125 caps. The former Manchester United star also appealed for speculation about who willreplace the Swede as England coach to stop so the national team can focus on theWorld Cup. He told Real’s official website: ‘We need the best person for the job. What I wantis for the rumours regarding the manager’s departure to end so that everyone canconcentrate on the World Cup. ‘We have a lot of work to do.

Bolton 0 West Ham 0: Hammers hold firm to earn replay-Sport-Football…
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Feb 19, 2006
” In contrast, Bolton travel to Marseille on Thursday and if they progress to the last 16 of the Uefa Cup, they will face severe fixture congestion. “If we beat Marseille, we might have to play four games in a week,” said Bolton manager Sam Allardyce. “But I’d rather that than not be in the Uefa or FA Cup. “Our disappointment is that in the Marseille game and this one we haven’t done the business at home. ” There was a large travelling support, but a half-full Reebok told its own tale with all its sepia-tinted suggestions of PC Scorey, white horses and 1923, the swathes of empty spaces suggesting that despite the lip-service paid to what Jose Mourinho last week referred to as “the beautiful competition”, the FA Cup’s grip on the paying public is loosening.

Full tests”The decision to conduct a full battery of tests comes following the proposal of the UEFA Referees Committee, which also stressed the importance of the tests being carried out at the highest level of the game in order to test the system in a real big-match atmosphere,” said UEFA. “The referee communication system, aimed at allowing quicker exchange of information, could be of help in several situations, such as substitutions, additional time, the identity of a cautioned player and fouls which occur out of sight of the referee. The system is a closed circuit and will not be used in any way for television broadcast. ”
Results awaitedThe system is already used in both France and Scotland, and depending on the results of the tests, UEFA will decide whether or not to extend its use for its leading competitions. “UEFA is in favour of technological help, provided it has no incidence on the fluidity of play and provided it could not undermine the authority of the referee,” UEFA added.
