Eriksson hands FA World Cup deadline | England | International |…
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 27, 2006
“England have to play a friendly in August and then the 2008 qualifiers start in September. Of course they have to do it before the World Cup. It’s enough if England go to Germany with one manager, not two. He will have to stay in the stands. “I’m more sad than relieved. I like the job I have and I’m proud of it. Football is like a drug… Football is like a drug. I hope to be involved in football after August. “Eriksson is determined to improve on England’s quarter-final finishes at Euro 2004 and the 2002 World Cup. “If we only reach the quarter-finals you will kill me,” Eriksson told Radio 5 Live. “I am even more confident than I was four years ago or two years ago. The squad is much stronger.

With Roddick?s departure Australian Lleyton Hewitt becomes the top seed in Las Vegas. reutersI came back to win World Cup not be a clown, says Zidane PARIS: French footballing icon Zinedine Zidane said on Monday that he had not returned to the international fold to be made look a clown but to win the World Cup. The 33-year-old returned last August, after initially retiring after Euro 2004, to help France qualify for the World Cup finals but he told L?Equipe that he wanted to taste World Cup glory again just as he did in 1998 with the French. ?You know, I did not come back to play the clown,? said the Real Madrid star. ?Now that I am here, it is to go to the end! It is to win,? added Zidane, who scored twice in the 3-0 victory over Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final. Zidane, who was also an integral part of the Euro 2000 winning side, said there was no point a player turning up at the World Cup just for the sake of it. ?Yes, we are going there (to Germany) to win the World Cup… reutersI came back to win World Cup not be a clown, says Zidane PARIS: French footballing icon Zinedine Zidane said on Monday that he had not returned to the international fold to be made look a clown but to win the World Cup. It is a wonderful and magnificent journey, that is to say and even to repeat it: we can win.

My Sport: Giovanni Van Bronckhorst

Sports watched: I follow a lot of football, basketball and Formula One. Sports played: My life from a young age was all about football, and football training. I played golf in my time at Arsenal only once; it did not go very well. I realised straight away that you need to put a lot of time in. I am at the stage in my life and career where if I am not playing football, I like to be with my family. Golf’s definitely a sport I want to try when I am older… I know there are many thousands of people who would swap their jobs to be able to make a very good standard of living from something they love doing. That is why you should, and must, give everything you can when you are in this position. Most memorable sporting moment: Being in the Dutch World Cup and European Championship squad in three major championships – the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 – because, on a personal and team level, you are getting a chance to test and measure yourself against the best players in the world. Being together for a long period of time and building a team spirit is a great feeling. Winning the Spanish championship with Barcelona was great, given how competitive La Liga is, and it was particularly enjoyable at Barcelona for me; I joined when the club’s fortune changed because of the attitude of the players and the coaching staff. Worst sporting moment: Holland’s elimination from Euro 2000 by Italy in the semi-final on penalties, in front of a home crowd, when we felt we had a great chance of winning in the final. We played really well, but had no luck.

BORIS BECKERThe youngest man to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title, at 17, he was definitely the most exciting player to watch, with his make-or-break dives and huge booming serve – he arguably kickstarted the power era of the men’s game! Sami. NADIA COMANECI The tiny Romanian was the darling of the 1976 Olympics, where she became the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10. Not only that, she went on to get another six, not to mention winning three gold medals a silver and a bronze. And all aged just 14. Sarah, Oxfordshire. MARTINA HINGIS Hingis won three out of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 1997, aged 16… As a teenager he scared the life out of defences and was signed for ?30m by one of the biggest clubs in the world. He set alight Euro 2004 and is already England’s star player. Simply sensational. SACHIN TENDULKARHe scored a first class century when he was just 15, made his Test debut for India at 16 and had scored three incredible Test match centuries by the time he was 18. His 114 at the WACA against Australia in 1992 was awesome.

Otherwise, afterwards, I would be left with regrets. ? Last month, Zidane told French television channel Canal+ that he wanted to finish the season and then focus on the World Cup before making any decisions on the next 12 months. Now he is keen to make up for France?s World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004 disasters. In the 2002 World Cup, France failed to make it out of the group stages when faced with Uruguay, Senegal and Denmark. With Zidane injured for their first two games and only a peripheral figure in their last, France failed to score a single goal and crashed out with two defeats and a draw. Two years on and they fell at the first knock-out hurdle when faced with eventual champions Greece. ?We have a good team, but we said that as well in 2002 and 2004… Two years on and they fell at the first knock-out hurdle when faced with eventual champions Greece. ?We have a good team, but we said that as well in 2002 and 2004. Therefore, we must not make the same mistakes,? he said. ?We have to prepare well and be ready. The French team can be competitive if we all arrive at 100 per cent. ?In 2002, there were so many negative things that happened that in the end, on the field, it went the way it did. ?Personally, I am a little sad about it, particularly 2004 because in 2004 we were well prepared.

Eriksson ‘quite sure’ of World Cup semis
rte.ie – Feb 26, 2006
The England coach will step down after the tournament in Germany but believes his side are one of four or five capable of winning the biggest prize in football. Eriksson believes England can go at least one better than their quarter-final defeat by Brazil four years ago and told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme: “Hopefully we will go further than that and I’m quite sure we will, because I am very confident. “I am more confident now than four years ago and two years ago (at Euro 2004 in Portugal) because the squad is much stronger. The only thing which I always say is hopefully there will not be a lot of injuries and too many tired players but we have one extra week (to prepare) so that will be good. “You have to remember we are not the only team at the World Cup, there are teams like Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Holland and so on. I always said I think we are one of four or five teams that could win it and I believe that very strongly. Since I was a boy my dream was always the World Cup.

Toshack requires Savage – Hartson
BBC News – Feb 18, 2006
“Toshack must bite the bullet and call them, they’re two of our top stars and should be playing for Wales,” he said. “It’s ok to give the youngsters a chance but I don’t think we have the quality in abundance to get anywhere. “Things have been difficult for Toshack and I hope they get better, but I’m not sure they will. We’ve four or five good players, the rest make up the numbers. ”

Savage and Thatcher both left the Wales scene following high-profile rows with Toshack, although the former recently reiterated his desire to return. The Blackburn midfielder claims he has tried to contact Toshack but that his “olive branch” has been refused, while the manager refuses to discuss the matter until Savage apologises. Celtic striker Hartson, 30, retired from international football at the beginning of the month after 10 years, 51 caps and 14 goals… ”

But despite the good relations between Toshack and Hartson, the Celtic man has a sense of nostalgia for Hughes’ era. “Mark took over from Bobby Gould who was a disgrace to Welsh football, he picked up the pieces and revitalised us,” said the striker. “We didn’t have the strength in depth then, either, but Mark got the best out of us and got us to within 45 minutes of Euro 2004. “You only have to look at what Mark has achieved with Blackburn since to see his qualities. ”

*John Hartson was speaking to BBC Radio Wales’ The Back Page programme, which has a regular slot on Saturdays, 0830-0900 BST.
