RTÉ Sport: Duff looking forward to Euro’ 2008 campaign
rte.ie – Mar 2, 2006
Damien Duff is counting down the days to the start of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign in a bid to banish the pain of missing this summer’s World Cup. Although new manager Steve Staunton’s reign started with a bang at Lansdowne Road last night, the 3-0 romp over Sweden underlined the pain being felt at the fact that Ireland will not be in Germany. For Duff, in particular, Staunton’s arrival would appear to have had a galvanising effect as the Chelsea winger produced arguably his best performance for Ireland for some time. Celebrating his 27th birthday today, the victory was welcome enough but scoring the opening goal of the Staunton era – and his first at international level for 27 months – proved the icing on the cake. Duff, now injury free after struggling in recent months, feels he is back on song – just regretful the season will not stretch into the summer after failing to qualify under former manager Brian Kerr… “But this is a new era now and we’re all looking forward to it. It’s just a shame we’re not going to the World Cup. I’ve known for a while now that I’m not going, and I’m sure it will hit home again in the summer when it’s on the television. “We can’t let it bother us, but we know we didn’t do the business in the group stages. As far as I’m concerned, it’s now a case of roll on September and our first game with Germany,” he added. In particular if Duff stays fit and has a good pre-season, then he will be key to their hopes of a victory in Stuttgart on September 2. “I’ve had a hard couple of months,” reflected Duff.

Record scorer Keane can lead from the front

Former captain Kenny Cunningham retired from international football after Ireland’s failure to qualify for the World Cup finals. There is no natural successor, so a guessing game has started in the build-up to tomorrow’s friendly against Sweden, the first match under Staunton. Keane, the Tottenham striker, and Dunne, Manchester City’s centre-back, seem guaranteed places in the side when the Euro 2008 qualifiers begin next September. Although Kilbane, the Everton winger, has started the last 36 competitive matches, many Ireland observers wonder whether he will be a regular in the Staunton regime. Only Dunne has club captaincy experience and has put aside problems off the pitch to become a steady, reliable defender. For various reasons Dunne missed a year of international football between November 2003 and 2004, but in the absence of Cunningham is expected to be the mainstay of the defence under Staunton… For various reasons Dunne missed a year of international football between November 2003 and 2004, but in the absence of Cunningham is expected to be the mainstay of the defence under Staunton. Leading Ireland could be the lift Keane needs to assume extra responsibility and raise his game when the Euro 2008 campaign gets under way. Any campaign for the armband to begiven to Shay Given, the Republic’s Player of the Year, was derailed yesterday when he revealed he would not be captain for tomorrow’s friendly. Under Staunton’s predecessor, Brian Kerr, the press were treated almost as an enemy in the camp. Yesterday players and media mixed in a more relaxed atmosphere at the squad’s Portmarnock headquarters as Ireland prepared for the friendly against Sweden, who are in England’s World Cup group.

The full-back has joined the national team while consigned to his club bench. “It’s a bit frustrating sitting on the bench, but I’m not going to be banging on the manager’s door,” he said. “Since he put me on the bench, we’ve only lost a couple of games, so I’m just grateful to be in the 16 and hope to build up my match fitness soon. ”

Naysmith is desperate to play in the finals of a major tournament, Scotland’s last successful qualification campaign coming almost 10 years ago – for the 1998 World Cup. “I wouldn’t say it was the last throw of the dice for me,” he said, looking ahead to a difficult Euro 2008 qualifying group that contains France, Italy and Ukraine… But time is running out. “This will be my fifth qualifying campaign either for the World Cup or the European Championships and we haven’t qualified for one yet, so I’m eager to get to a major finals with Scotland. “I don’t know what the feeling is among the fans about the Euro 2008 draw. “But, if you go into the Everton changing room, they will tell you we have no chance. “I have been taking a bit of stick there, with some players saying it is over before it has started. “But, since I have been involved with the national team, we have achieved better results against the bigger teams. “So, hopefully, that will continue in the forthcoming campaign.

BBC News – Feb 27, 2006

Meanwhile, Eriksson himself has called for the FA to appoint his successor before the World Cup begins in June. He told BBC Radio Five Live: “I think the FA must have a new manager before the World Cup starts because if they wait until after it’s too late. “England have to play a friendly game in August and then qualifying for Euro 2008 starts in September. ”

But Eriksson said he would not welcome the next manager being involved in his coaching set-up ahead of the tournament. He added: “I think England should go to Germany with one manager not two. “He’s welcome to sit in the stands.

NI unlikely to play in tournament
BBC News – Mar 2, 2006
The organisers of the pre-World Cup event have inquired whether the IFA would be interested in taking part. “We receive a number of invitations like this and we have gone back to the organisers to find out the precise nature of the financial details. “Unless it is a lucrative offer, we are not interested in playing,” said Boyce. Manager Lawrie Sanchez is aware of the offer and is believed to have consulted with a number of players regarding their potential availability for such a tour… The dates of the competition have not been revealed but Mexico and Paraguay are among the other countries to have been approached. End of season tours have not proved popular with players in the past and several withdrew from the Caribbean summer tour two years ago. Northern Ireland are hoping to secure a friendly match away to Belgium in August, ahead of their first Euro 2008 qualifier against Iceland at Windsor Park in September.

“This is now the chance for the youngsters to come in and impress,” said Giggs. “We have four games now before the Euro 2008 qualifiers start next season, so there are a few places up for grabs. “The young lads are here and they will be pushing for places – that’s what it’s all about. ”

He added: “Being captain, the youngsters look up to me the most – but that’s something I am comfortable with. “A few of the old hands have gone now. There used to be half-a-dozen of us sitting at the back of the coach.

Their opponents include France, Italy, and the Ukraine and the striker said: “We need to believe we have a chance. “It’s probably the hardest task that’s ever faced a Scottish squad in terms of qualification for a major finals. “But we have to believe that we can get there, and hopefully we will. It’s a huge challenge for Scotland.

Andorra give England gentle start
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 3, 2006
Following talks in Geneva, England will open their campaign to reach the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland against Andorra before two matches against Macedonia. The game against Andorra in September looks set to be the first England fixture at the new Wembley, although the opening date for the stadium is unclear following last month’s decision to scrap plans to hold the FA Cup final there in May. The FA had feared the qualifying programme for Group E would have to be settled by drawing lots after talks to determine fixtures broke down last week. But following intervention by the FA this week, a breakthrough was made early yesterday afternoon… An FA spokesman said: “It has been alleged that Beckham has ruled out any potential candidates who have not managed at Champions League level. “However the transcript clearly states that in response to a question whether the manager should have experience of the Champions League, he simply stated that the next England manager has ‘to be able to handle big games – like in Champions League and World Cups. This decision will be made by the FA not me’. David Beckham did not say Champions League experience was a must requirement, or rule out any individuals. “Beckham will have the chance to explain his comments if the FA decide to ask the opinions of the senior players as part of their recruitment policy. Crouch inspires England come-back
Financial Times – Mar 2, 2006
They can perhaps take heart from having got some ill luck out of the way early, for there will not be too many centre-backs looping 30-yard volleys into the top corner as Omar Pouso did after 26 minutes last night. Other misfortune could be more damaging. Injuries seem to blight every England campaign, and the jinx this year has fallen on the left-backs. After Ashley Cole broke down last week, Wayne Bridge was stretchered off having been clattered from behind by goalkeeper Paul Robinson. A scan showed no break, but there was damage to the ankle ligaments… Specific answers may have been few, but Eriksson can take heart from the knowledge that winning games and scoring late goals is a good habit to have. In Dublin, Steve Staunton picked up a 3-0 victory over Sweden in his first game as Ireland coach. Scotland’s preparations for their Euro 2008 qualifiers suffered a blow when they lost 3-1 to Switzerland at Hampden. Northern Ireland chalked up their first victory in four games beating Estonia 1-0 at Windsor Park, and Wales produced a creditable performance to hold World Cup finalists Paraguay 0-0 at the Millennium Stadium. Among shocks in other friendlies, Croatia hit back from a goal down to beat Argentina 3-2 in Switzerland; Slovakia’s 2-1 win in Paris was France’s first defeat since Euro 2004; and Italy fired a warning to their World Cup rivals, crushing a lacklustre Germany 4-1 in Florence. *England’s cricketers endured a wretched opening day to the Test series in India as intense heat and 55 overs of Indian spinbowling sapped the tourists’ concentration levels, writes Ted Corbett in Nagpur. The one bright spot was the discoveryof a new opening batsman.

“The days of eight or nine players crying off from a friendly match are behind us I think so, in that regard, we are moving in the right direction. “I don’t doubt for a minute the commitment of those who are injured. “Estonia is not an easy game and if we do not play well, they are very capable of beating us,” warned Sanchez. The NI boss added that it would be “nice to finish the last game of this season on a high, with a decent win”. “Results are important and we want to win matches, but within that, you want to give some new players a chance. “We want to give the supporters something back for the backing they gave us throughout the last campaign and in August we will start looking ahead seriously to the Euro 2008 qualifiers… The NI boss added that it would be “nice to finish the last game of this season on a high, with a decent win”. “Results are important and we want to win matches, but within that, you want to give some new players a chance. “We want to give the supporters something back for the backing they gave us throughout the last campaign and in August we will start looking ahead seriously to the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

” Trinidad are the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cupfinals and have been drawn with the Swedes, England andParaguay. “I don’t need to tell the other players what this is all about,”added Yorke, stressing that the Caribbean country would not justmake up the numbers. “We are not turning up to be the whipping boys of the tournament.
