Scolari delays potential England talks | The Guardian | Guardian…
Guardian Unlimited – Apr 25, 2006
getElementById( ‘frameId168977’ ). He sees no reason why the FA cannot put back its pre-World Cup deadline and if it fails to do so the alternative, according to his adviser Acaz Fellegger in Rio de Janeiro, is that he will withdraw from the list of candidates. “The English FA have shown signs they want to hire Luis Felipe… He wants a good World Cup and then he will talk about his future. But England must think first about the World Cup and then other issues afterwards. “Fellegger pointed out that Scolari led Portugal into Euro 2004 amid intense speculation that he was speaking to Benfica about becoming their manager. “It was in the Portuguese press that Luis Felipe would take over Benfica once the European Championship was over,” he said. “There was so much speculation that in the end, when the championship was over, he said ‘I will work for any team in the world apart from Benfica’. By putting pressure [on him] like this, the FA risk him saying the same thing about England. “By making these thinly veiled threats Scolari and his representatives are demonstrating why, of the five short-listed candidates, he would probably be the most difficult man to work with.

Who is going to get Sven’s job?
BBC News – Apr 20, 2006
Crissy Kay, England, UK

England has a crop of world class players to choose from for the national team. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the present crop of managers. Mark Huxtable, New Zealand

As long as the players are English it does not matter the nationality of the man in charge. Looking back to Euro 2004, the two most sucessful managers, the finalists Scolari and Rehaggel, had not come from the country they were managing.

World Cup Scouting – Kieron Dyer
BBC News – Apr 20, 2006
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson was clearly another admirer and named Dyer in his squad for the 2002 World Cup, despite only seeing him play 45 minutes in a white shirt. Dyer was a candidate for the problematic left-wing position, while his versatility made him an able deputy for David Beckham on the right as well as at right-back or in central midfield. A series of niggling injuries, combined with some off-the-field problems, meant Dyer was again a doubt for Euro 2004 but Eriksson gave him the nod. But, despite his undoubted ability and ample opportunities, the general feeling is he has yet to fulfil his potential either for club or country. A total of 28 international appearances – 21 of them coming off the bench – is a poor return for Dyer, who is also still awaiting his first goal for England. KIERON DYER – THE FORM GUIDE

This season has been yet another injury nightmare for Dyer. Only once in his seven seasons on Tyneside has Dyer made over 30 league appearances for the Magpies, despite being one of the first names on the team-sheet when fit… Dyer played only a bit part in any of the goals as the Magpies won 4-1. However, once Newcastle found themselves in control of the game he brought a calming influence to central midfield. This was not Dyer the destroyer who puts fear into defenders when the ball is at his feet. This was Dyer the container who lets the ball do the work. The lung-bursting runs were replaced by sideways passes but Dyer, who played for 75 minutes against Wigan two days before, will be happy to have got a rare 90 minutes under his belt. WHAT THE SUPPORTERS THINK

Probably not worth the risk because of the fact he has been injured for most of the season. What Dyer needs now is a good pre-season with us and hopefully he will be ready for the start of next season.

Zidane to retire after 2006 World Cup
The Age – Apr 26, 2006
“I didn’t want to experience another year like the ones I’vebeen through. Zidane had been expected to announce his decision at a newsconference called for Wednesday in Madrid. The gifted son of Algerian immigrants said after France’s earlyexit from Euro 2004 that he was retiring from internationalfootball. In August last year, with France struggling to qualify for theWorld Cup finals in Germany, he decided after all that he could notlet down the side he inspired for a decade. Voted European player of the year in 1998 and world player ofthe year in 1999, 2000 and 2003, he came second only to MichelPlatini as France’s most respected footballer. Zidane, who made thousands weep for joy after the 1998 World Cupfinal, is a man of few words who is happy to let his football dothe talking. He is also respected for the money and time he discreetly spendsfor charity, especially in helping handicapped children… Zidane, who made thousands weep for joy after the 1998 World Cupfinal, is a man of few words who is happy to let his football dothe talking. Zidane, who has never forgotten his humble roots, will not mindbeing out of the limelight once his playing days are over. For the moment, though, he wants to savour the last stretch ofhis glittering career. “I wanted everybody to know before the World Cup, to dedicatemyself fully to it,” he said on Tuesday.

Scolari reportedly back in running
CNN International – Apr 24, 2006
But reports Monday indicated that Scolari’s stock had risen after he put in a highly-impressive second interview with officials choosing Eriksson’s successor. According to The Times, it has come down to a choice between long-time favorite and Middlesbrough manager Steve McLaren and the Brazilian. Scolari, who won the World Cup with Brazil before leading Portugal to the final of Euro 2004, has the support of FA vice-chairman David Dein, the man responsible for bringing Arsene Wenger to English football. The Times also claims Alan Curbishley and Martin O’Neill are no longer realistic contenders, while The Independent states that with the FA board divided over the appointment, and support for McClaren fading, "Big Phil’ is again being considered as an option. "Scolari’s contract will run out after the World Cup and he has always maintained he will not take another job before the tournament in Germany although the English FA are expected to make a decision this week… Scolari, who won the World Cup with Brazil before leading Portugal to the final of Euro 2004, has the support of FA vice-chairman David Dein, the man responsible for bringing Arsene Wenger to English football. But turbulent topsoil is not a new phenomenon, according to West Ham’s legendary former goalkeeper Ludo Miklosko, who played in the Hammers’ last FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park in 1991. Miklosko, now the club’s goalkeeping coach, was humiliated by a 4-0 trouncing from Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest, but says: “They had just re-laid the pitch and it was very, very slippery underfoot and the grass was moving. I would have saved two of the goals if it hadn’t been for that. “Far more significant, however, was the controversial sending off of West Ham’s Tony Gale after 25 minutes for an alleged foul on Gary Crosby… But turbulent topsoil is not a new phenomenon, according to West Ham’s legendary former goalkeeper Ludo Miklosko, who played in the Hammers’ last FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park in 1991. Toons battle World Cup for summer supremacy
Hollywood Reporter – Apr 25, 2006
Pictures International Distribution. The summer’s soccer World Cup, the movie industry’s quadrennial scheduling nemesis, provoked intricate jockeying for suitable playing time for key product, resulting in a May grouping of tentpole entries. With the tournament taking place June 9-July 9 in Germany, the major studios are making sure that selected event films do not compete with primetime televised soccer games, especially in Europe. Global time differences had studio schedulers working overtime to come up with tailor-made, noncompeting placements during and after the soccer contests. “Cars” is staying away from the World Cup, presuming that the stock-car racing elements of the film would have wide appeal beyond the kiddie trade. Except for a June 14 date in France, “Cars” will drive worldwide starting in July and ending with a September rollout in Germany. Buena Vista International, Disney’s overseas distribution arm, has picked June 14 in France to meet the country’s six-month law relating to the DVD release because “we wanted to have the DVD ready for Christmas,” said Anthony Marcoly, BVI’s executive vp distribution and acquisition… The remake of 1972’s “The Poseidon Adventure” has been set for June only in Italy and the U. K, hitting Germany in July after the World Cup. “We have done this because we found that during Euro 2004 (the European soccer championship) those films dated last before the event showed on average a better playability,” Kwan-Rubinek said. “In France, we are going on June 14 to play into La Fete du Cinema (France’s annual moviegoing promotion), which we expect will offset any potential impact from the soccer games. ” Fox’s remake of the 1976 horror classic “The Omen” also got under the wire before the June 9 soccer start. Paul Hanneman, co-president of 20th Century Fox International, said the John Moore-directed thriller would open day-and-date in every country worldwide (except Japan) on June 6, a Tuesday. That’s usually an off day for a major film launch, but its marketers also are seizing on the 6-6-06 date.
