It stands for artistry, inspiration and genius, for the combination of sublime individual skill and collective fluidity to create a whole that is both beautiful to watch and devastatingly successful. The country has produced 50 years’ worth of great players – Garrincha, Pele, Jairzinho, Tostao, Socrates and Zico to name but a few. Having won the World Cup a record five times, not surprisingly Brazil head into the 2006 tournament as the hot favourites to lift the trophy this summer. More than that, though, with outstanding individual talents such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka orchestrating the team, there are also high expectations they will produce more moments that will live on in football legend. But how does Brazil produce so many great teams and wonderful players?

With the help of some of the country’s biggest football names, BBC Sport finds out what makes Brazil so good. A NATIONAL OBSESSION

The story of Brazil’s domination of world football starts with the sport’s uniquely important position in national life. “The national football team,” says its coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, “is the symbol of national identity, the only time the nation gets together.

“It’s always something special to be the youngest in the team but I’m not taking that aspect too seriously as we’re here to play football and for that age doesn’t really matter,” Djourou said. “My own goal for the World Cup is just to play and now I have to prepare myself to show the coach that I’m ready. ”

Signed by Arsenal at the age of 16, the central defender has just completed a breakthrough season, both in the Premiership and internationally. Adding to Djourou’s sense of the surreal is that an entire Arsenal back four could take to the pitch on Saturday, with himself and Philippe Senderos in the Swiss camp and Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure turning out for Ivory Coast… “It’s always something special to be the youngest in the team but I’m not taking that aspect too seriously as we’re here to play football and for that age doesn’t really matter,” Djourou said. “My own goal for the World Cup is just to play and now I have to prepare myself to show the coach that I’m ready. ”

If he gets his chance I think he’ll do well. He’s lightning quick and if he plays in the World Cup then I hope we can use that to our benefit. He’s really down to earth and a quiet sort of guy, plus he’s got a good family and good girlfriend behind him to help. All the players will look after him in the England camp. We’re not going to let him be down or be on his own, and we’ve got a lot of experienced players who can look after him. It probably will be hard for him but as I said we’ve just got to make it as good as we can and as easy as we can for him.

BBC News – May 24, 2006
The Real Madrid star faced the wrath of Spain coach Luis Aragones after turning up to a get-together in a yellow surf-style t-shirt. Aragones, who follows the religion of kabbalah, believes the colour is bad news, despite the fact it makes up half of the Spanish flag. The incident at the Las Rozas ground was reported by the El Pais newspaper, under the headline “Raul, with the forbidden colour”. The article read: “Apparently Raul does not know, or else is not worried, about the fact that yellow is an object of vexation to his coach… ”

The paper said Aragones shouted to the player: “Raul, take it off, take it off!” as soon as he spotted him. El Pais claims the manager’s fear of yellow is so strong that he once ordered a set of training cones in the offending shade to be replaced with red ones. Spain are in line to play Brazil in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Could be interesting.

World Cup orders expose textiles skills shortages
Financial Times – May 23, 2006
In Cambridgeshire, House of Flags, which has produced more than 100 kilometres of St George’s bunting and more than 1,000 banners for pubs and clubs, says it has been managing its World Cup workload, against the “ongoing issue” of the shortage of machinists, by lots of overtime and careful production scheduling. It has also recruited outworkers from the declining shoe industry in Northamptonshire. From cat collars and dog football shirts to wigs and face paints; from inflatable desktop football nets – handy in the office – to red and white fridges and the ubiquitous car flags, the World Cup is a huge business opportunity. Woolworth alone, whose corporate colours fortuitously are red and white, is stocking 300 lines, of which half, including DVDs and computer games, are UK made. Marks and Spencer’s male customers can relax at home watching the matches in clothing officially licensed by the Football Association, including a dressing gown (made in Sri Lanka), shorts and cap (made in China) and T-shirt (made in Egypt). In marketing terms, the 2006 World Cup could be the finest moment for St George, as a brand since the Reformation suppressed the cult of England’s patron saint, who was killed by the Emperor Diocletian in Palestine in 303 for protesting against the persecution of Christians. The red and white is most obvious in the millions of car flags already fluttering from vehicles. Half a million of these have been imported, from China, by Leicestershire-based One Stop Promotions, which sells them in minimum quantities of 288 for 24p each. “We’ve already sold five times as many as for the European Championship [two years ago],” said Keith Poyser, managing director.

But on balance, the mood here is one of excited optimism. Brazilians never tire of pointing out that they have the best players – for most, it’s simply a question of whether the chosen 11 put things together on the day. Back on 25 de Marco, one shopper, Marilda, is examining the World Cup G-string. “For sure Brazil will win,” she smiles, “and these football knickers are very nice – assuming you’ve got the body for them.

Serbians preparing to go it alone
CNN International – May 23, 2006
They will head into Euro 2008 qualifying on their own, following the political split between the two republics. Serbia and Montenegro Football Association (FSSCG) chief Tomislav Karadzic told daily Sportski Zurnal the body would cease to exist after the tournament in Germany. Serbia would then carry on by itself. "We were prepared for any outcome of the Montenegrin independence referendum and we have a precisely defined plan for the upcoming period," he said.
