“With you?”With me and with others. We are convinced it is not about individuals but a philosophy. After me there will be another, at some point – that’s what it’s like in football. “How big a danger is it that Germany will blow the World Cup, that your match planning will have been in vain?”If it doesn’t go well, I will be out. I understand that completely. It would be a shame if anybody else suffered collateral damage in the process.

Time Ronaldinho grasped his moment
Hindu – Jun 1, 2006
A thousand words it does not speak. No, it is far more precious than that. It is taken at the 1982 World Cup, and Maradona stands, his back to us, ball affixed to left foot, contemplative. For facing him are six Belgians closely bunched, like a collection of anxious matadors wondering if they’ve got enough numbers for a fair fight. The picture is important, for it symbolises the awe he evoked, it represents a time when this urchin Picasso started to reopen the conversation on who the greatest footballer in the world was. After the 1986 cup, Pele would not stand alone… Ronaldinho’s splendour requires no World Cup confirmation, one might think. A month of invention in Germany is nothing for a man who has spent two years advertising his skills, playing with, and against, the world’s most celebrated players. For the Barcelona football orchestra, the Brazilian has been soloist yet also conductor, goal scorer and fashioner, his elastic excellence not produced on whim but consistently. Weekly his boots tap out symphonies. It is said in training he once hit a crossbar four times in succession, deliberately, and while that videotape has its sceptics he is the only man who makes the idea not completely ridiculous. Ronaldinho has in fact won a cup (in 2002, and scored a bewildering goal against England that in light of his subsequent artistry appears less fluke and more design), but one might say he did not leave on it the stamp of his grinning genius. Complicated business

Cups and greatness is anyway a complicated business.

Concerted efforts need of the hour: Lakshmanan

” The present football scenario in the country could not have been more accurately expressed as the words came from one who had been involved in efforts to develop soccer in India. A member of the Appeal Committee of FIFA, P. Lakshmanan, who had served as honorary secretary of the All India Football Federation and president of the Kerala Football Association, was far from excited when he was about to leave for Germany for the World Cup beginning on June 9… A member of the Appeal Committee of FIFA, P. Lakshmanan, who had served as honorary secretary of the All India Football Federation and president of the Kerala Football Association, was far from excited when he was about to leave for Germany for the World Cup beginning on June 9. Stagnation point

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Mr. Lakshmanan said that Indian football remained where it was several years ago, while many small nations have emerged as powers to reckon with in the international soccer. Neither football players nor administrators of football associations in the country could make a guess as to when the country could send a National team for the World Cup, he lamented.

Last month, CBI deputy director general John Cridland said many firms were worried about staff skipping work to watch England’s World Cup football matches. Robert Pires was a key player in Arsenal’s run to the final in this year’s competition, where the team took the lead but eventually lost to FC Barcelona. Both were left off World Cup rosters for this year’s tournament in Germany. “I rang my cousin, who told me I wasn’t going,” said Dudek, Poland’s starting goalkeeper at the last World Cup. “I thought it had to be joke. I thought I’d see on the news it was all a big joke. “Days before (Poland coach Pawel) Janas announced the squad, we spoke and I was going to the World Cup… “Pires, who played for France when the team won the title at home in 1998, missed the last tournament and apparently is out of favor with Raymond Domenech because the coach does not trust players born under the sign of Scorpio. Despite the snub, the midfielder is excited about the tournament. “It’s going to be a great competition in a country that loves football and we’ll see some beautiful stadiums and some great teams,” Pires said. “Now if you ask me who is going to win, it’s hard to answer, as lots of teams have reached a certain level. “Pires knows the favorite is Brazil. “When you get beyond the group stage.
