We, the Soca Warriors, felt especially favored, but no doubt all visitors to these games must surely feel the same. The World Cup 2006 will set the standard for future World Cups in country pride and celebrations. Get back out there and show us all that match results, even up to the final, are only a minor part of the massive international goodwill you have gained by staging these games. World Cup: Argentina hopes to shake off melancholy
International Herald Tribune – Jun 7, 2006
Since then, the performance of the blue- and-whites has been as melancholy as a tango lyric. Since then, the performance of the blue- and-whites has been as melancholy as a tango lyric… A coaching change was made midstream, there have been injuries to key players and, most recently, a heated debate has erupted about some of the players that Coach José Pekerman chose for the squad and about some that he left off. "It's the famous Argentine taste for drama," said Ezequiel Fernández Moores, a popular Argentine sports and political commentator. "We like to cry a lot and to play the role of victims, and we always need to convoke demons from outside to explain our failures, not just in football but in everything else. " As in 2002, when a loss to England was a decisive factor in Argentina's early exit, there has been much grumbling that Argentina has been singled out for unfair treatment by being seeded in a "group of death" while archrival Brazil was favored with an easier draw. To advance, Argentina will have to get past a strong Dutch team and two other potentially dangerous squads: Ivory Coast (its first opponent, on Saturday) and Serbia-Montenegro.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE More than soccer in Germany’s pitch
San Francisco Chronicle – Jun 7, 2006
The already overwhelming presence of soccer (or, as most of the world calls it, football) in almost every aspect of German life will escalate even further on Friday with the opening ceremonies of the 2006 World Cup soccer tournament. The German government has seized on the monthlong event to promote Germany as a business and research powerhouse, a cultural mecca and a tourist destination. The variety and frenzied pace of the planned activities border on the fanatic — or maybe, the frantic. After gearing up for three years to welcome 6 million visitors and football fans, Germany is consumed by the event. Football dominates news coverage, retail displays — a store in Leipzig had floor-to-ceiling World Cup party paraphernalia, including cups, plates, bowls, steins, place mats, pillows and tiny voodoo dolls, complete with team emblems and long pins — and the cityscape itself… The variety and frenzied pace of the planned activities border on the fanatic — or maybe, the frantic. In Berlin, the government has created a “Walk of Ideas,” featuring six enormous Neopor (a new plastic) sculptures depicting German creativity and inventiveness, which winds through the city’s heart. The federal government has underwritten art exhibitions, theatrical plays, dance performances and new films — all exalting football. Yet, beneath the surface of this flamboyant celebration of sport, there’s the sense that Germans worrying that they are no longer in the game.

World Cup: My country, win or lose
International Herald Tribune – Jun 7, 2006
You Americans have the World Series, the rest of us have the World Cup, and never the twain shall meet. That goes even for Americans who might take some ancestral interest in distant sports. How many ardent Irish Americans know how the different species of football played in Ireland correspond closely to social fault lines and even political parties (Gaelic football for the ruling Fianna Fail party, rugby for the Fine Gael, soccer for Labor)? How many proud Jewish Americans know about the Zionist origins of the Israeli soccer clubs, and the significance of the fact (it would take another essay to explain this) that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is inevitably a fan of Jerusalem Betar? By now the game is passionately followed on every continent. There are five African teams in Germany – Angola, Togo, Ghana, Tunisia and Ivory Coast (which has been an astonishingly prolific source of players for European clubs) – as well as the Japanese and the Australians. A Ghanaian would have seemed an exotic when the tour began, in 1930… You Americans have the World Series, the rest of us have the World Cup, and never the twain shall meet. A Ghanaian would have seemed an exotic when the tour began, in 1930. Only teams from Latin America and Europe played in the original World Cup, and only such teams have so far won it. But winning the Cup isn't necessary for a team to make a mark on its nation's character with a noble victory, or a heroic defeat.

CNN.com – Ronaldo – Jun 7, 2006
CNN International – Jun 7, 2006
Seven minutes later he was carried off in agony as his knee buckled under him. At 24, with many doubting whether he would ever play again, it seemed that Ronaldo’s career, which had started amid a blaze of goals as a 16-year-old "phenomenon" in Brazil, had been cut tragically short. Ronaldo was already a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year and had collected a World Cup winner’s medal as a non-playing teenage squad member in 1994. Yet, had he been forced to quit in 2000, he would inevitably have been remembered for the 1998 World Cup final. Having graced the tournament and scored four goals to steer Brazil to the final, Ronaldo suffered a mystery fit the night before the game. Although he played against France, he appeared in a permanent daze as the unsettled defending champions slumped to a 3-0 loss to the hosts. It took two years and two major operations before Ronaldo took to the football pitch again, just in time to claim a place in Brazil’s squad for the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.

World Cup putting Togo on the map
BBC News – Jun 7, 2006
A Togolese woman in traditional dress waved a national flag: “I feel so good about this day,” she laughed. “You know, if you say you come from Togo, people don’t know where Togo is. It is such a small country. Maybe now, with the World Cup, they will know about Togo. ”

Anticipation

Eric Akoto, a tall defender who plays his club football in Austria, can hardly wait for Togo’s first appearance at the tournament.

Additionally, tour activations for the second half of 2016 are substantially ahead of this time last year, and four of our six new sales centers are open and gaining momentum, giving us confidence that we will achieve our 2016 goals and are well positioned for solid growth in the years to come.”Such “soft” spectators are anathema to dyed in the wool fans, who deride them as “gloryseekers” and “plastic fans”. Personally, Cheap Oakleys I find this a one eyed view and have no problem with spectators who simply want to watch a decent game, something which was once common. Neither do Fulham, as long as they pay their money at the gate. The problem is that these supporters are unlikely to be as eager to fork out to watch Championship matches as they are Premier League contests. As cheap nfl jerseys Wimbledon found.
