Dutch Try to Rekindle ‘Clockwork Orange’
Washington Post – Jun 8, 2006
Because the Dutch are so often divided by internal wrangling, Van Basten decided to make a clean break. He has not called on either Edgar Davids, feeling comfortable with the few veterans such as Van Nistelrooy and Van der Sar among a group of promising youngsters. His goal is to win Euro 2008 and the World Cup was originally seen as a way station on the road. “It is a plus, but it would be unfair to have too high expectations,” he said, happily letting Brazil and Argentina carry the burden of favorite. After a strong qualification campaign, though, keeping expectations under control has been wishful thinking. On top of that, the Netherlands have been among the top three in the FIFA rankings all season. And coming back to Germany is so laden with history and grudges after the 1974 defeat in the final that the whole country is rooting to do at least as well as 32 years ago.

Deutsche Welle – Jun 7, 2006
He also said he’d move over for Oliver Kahn in Saturday’s match for third place. After his first major tournament in net for Germany, Lehmann said whether he stays with the national team until Euro 2008 largely depends on Klinsmann continuing to coach the young team he put together for the 2006 World Cup. It was Klinsmann who chose to start Lehmann over former Germany captain Kahn. Lehmann impressed many with his performance between the posts during the tournament though he didn’t have a chance of stopping the Italian goals that sent Germany out in the semi-finals… “If Jürgen decides that he does not want to continue, the disappointment would be enormous as we do not know what is coming next. ”

Lehmann, who looked slightly despondent at the press conference, admitted he was finding the Italy defeat hard to swallow. “The disappointment of going so close to winning two major trophies this season will stay with me for a long time,” he said, referring to losing the Champions League with his club team, Arsenal, before reaching the final. “As a player it is difficult to stomach missing out on the final. ”

Missing out on the final was likely to have been equally difficult for former Germany starter Kahn, who hasn’t played at all during the 2006 tournament.

FA cut England short list to four
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 4, 2006
Following an initial round of meetings with as many as nine coaches, the FA chief executive Brian Barwick will reveal his next move to a meeting of the FA board in London. Barwick is not, however, expected to announce the names of the candidates who have been chosen for the second phase of interviews, which will be conducted by a special nominations committee set up to find the next England manager. Barwick, Premier League chairman David Richards, International Committee chairman Noel White, Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein and director of football development Trevor Brooking will make up the panel who will assess the coaches over the next few weeks… ” The FA board will also be given a breakdown of the potential financial costs they face following the latest delay to the Wembley Stadium project. The FA and Wembley National Stadium Ltd announced last week that the new stadium would not open until next year, and that all planned events for the rest of the year would have to be moved elsewhere. The Community Shield, England’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia, and concerts featuring the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi and Robbie Williams, have all been moved. That is a major blow to Wembley’s business plan but the FA are hopeful that the banks who loaned the project £433 million will agree to put off repayments until the stadium eventually opens. Vieira named new France captain
Ireland Online – Jun 8, 2006
Vieira replaces Zinedine Zidane who retired following the World Cup, and will be handed the armband for the friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 16. Domenech appeared on television programme Telefoot to discuss his plans for the friendly, although he does not plan to name a squad until Wednesday. ?I will not pick a team based on their form at the moment but with the intention of preparing for the (Euro 2008) qualifying matches against Georgia and Italy,? he said. The main point of interest will be whether Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet is confirmed as the new number one in place of Fabien Barthez, but Domenech would not be drawn on the matter. ?The list will come on Wednesday,? he said. ?Be a little patient.
