Old barb may return to taunt Scotland
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 10, 2006
Do you want any tickets?”advertisement. The French did not and the failure stung them into a comprehensive revamp of their coaching systems which took Les Bleus to World Cup success in 1998 – Scotland’s last appearance in a major finals – and in the 2000 European Championship. Although France were eliminated in the first round of the 2002 World Cup finals and quarter-finals of Euro 2004, this summer’s World Cup final defeat by Italy in a penalty decider saw them almost back to their best – almost, but not quite, according to Walter Smith. The Scotland manager, charged with the unenviable task of containing the awesome French firepower in tomorrow’s Euro 2008 qualifier at Hampden Park, has identified improved teamwork and – following the retirement of Zinedine Zidane – a more collective assumption of leadership on the parts of players such as Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and Franck Ribery. France played a 4-2-3-1 formation against Italy in the World Cup final and kept the same shape when they met the Italians in Paris in what was a widely proclaimed revenge mission. Aside from the replacement of Fabian Barthez as goalkeeper by Gregory Coupet, the defence survived intact, with its back line of Willy Sagnol, Lilian Thuram, William Gallas and Eric Abidal… “We’re good footballers and we’re going to Euro 2008. Do you want any tickets?”.

World Cup: A searing goal in the heat, and the victory is Orange
International Herald Tribune – Jun 11, 2006
Those who know say that the first 10 meters are in the brain, and by the time the nearest defender realized the offside trap had been sprung, it was too late. The Serb did try to grasp a handful of Robben's bright orange shirt, but he barely got hold of the fibers, and the flying Dutchman was clear. But speed is not the only essential for a match winner. You also need composure, and you need the priceless ability to touch the ball on with your feet without disturbing concentration or stride. Robben has it all, and with one touch for control, then another to shoot, he gave the advancing goalkeeper, Dragoslav Jevric, only one option: to pick the ball out of the net. After that, Robben was sometimes uncontainable. His combination of quixotic movement and balance doesn't always satisfy his club manager, José Mourinho at Chelsea, but it is special to the Dutch Oranje and it lifted a team that is predominantly young and inexperienced… The Dutch did it expertly, even if their defense showed enough raw edges to suggest doubt that this is a team that can go all the way. Van Basten doesn't ask that. He states clearly that this is a team in transition, a squad being prepared for Euro 2008. The players know that they are in a group in which Argentina, similarly vulnerable in defense but lightning quick and with more options in attack, are favorites, but the Ivory Coast also showed late Saturday night a tenacity of spirit and a strength of athleticism that is not yet out of this fascinating Group C. One word, a big one, for the referee. Markus Merk, once a Kaiserslautern dentist, now a full-time referee, did something many of us have waited many a moon to witness. The irritating habit of modern pros to rush up to the referee and signal a yellow card for an opponent was dealt with by Merk on Sunday afternoon.

Religion moves in mysterious ways within our game

And let’s not even contemplate the founding fathers’ response to revelations about dogging and roasting. Faith, however, does from time to time insist on trying to plant seed on stony soil. This week a television reporter asked Tommy Burns, the Scotland assistant manager, if it would take a miracle for the Scots to beat France in tomorrow’s Euro 2008 qualifier at Hampden Park. There was a pause before Burns — a devout Catholic whose beliefs never held him back from sulphurous tackles when he played for Celtic — replied: “I don’t like to use a word like miracle in connection with football. “Having made his point without being sanctimonious, Burns went on to acknowledge the intimidating power of the French… And let’s not even contemplate the founding fathers’ response to revelations about dogging and roasting. The following day a particularly vivid example of religious fervour in football was offered — not for the first time – by Marvin Andrews, the Trinidad and Tobago defender who did not find favour with Paul Le Guen (Rangers’ first Catholic manager, by the way) when the Frenchman took over at Rangers during the summer.

Round-up: Barton charged by FA
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 10, 2006
Merseyside Police have already confirmed they will not be taking any action against the 24-year-old. Barton has been involved in a number of high-profile incidents in recent seasons but manager Stuart Pearce has urged people not to over-react in this case. “Maybe some of the things that were said to that player are a more serious matter, but we are not going to rake that up,” said Pearce. “He kept a smile on his face throughout the whole incident and he’s done something that, at worst, is a little bit childish. “At best, it’s a bit of comedy that everyone should laugh off – but I still have to deal with it… However, a spokesman for Rooney said: “Wayne does not blame the FA for any aspect of his current game. He is wholly committed in every way to England. ” France coach Raymond Domenech has called up Nicolas Anelka for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Scotland and the Faroe Islands. Anelka, who moved to Bolton in August, last played for his country against Slovakia in March this year, but has been recalled as cover for Louis Saha and Sidney Govou, who are both struggling with injuries. Saha is suffering from an adductor strain and Govou still has an ankle problem he picked up playing for Lyons against Sochaux last weekend. Domenech said on the injuries: “We will see by Saturday how the situation has evolved. But we have solutions in place.

BBC News – Jun 11, 2006
The 57-year-old Brazilian was recently touted as a replacement for Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager of England. But Portuguese football federation chief Gilberto Madail said: “We have agreed in principle but I can’t reveal the details at the moment. “If Scolari extends his contract, it will be for two years, not four, and will run until Euro 2008. ”

The deal is understood to depend on Portugal’s fortunes at the World Cup. Scolari declined the England job because of intrusion by the English press – the position was later filled by Steve McClaren.

Dein gives Chelsea hope

“United may not reveal so muchDespite the furore over agents, Manchester United chief executive David Gill says the club’s owners have still not decided whether they will continue their laudable policy of revealing the amounts they pay to middle men every year. Gill told Inside Football this week that the accounts for the financial year ending June 30 2006 are being signed off before publication in January, and that a decision on agents will be taken by the Glazers soon. The club want to continue to be open but are not prepared to be the only one in the Premiership to publish how much they pay. Last year it was revealed they had paid £2. 2million in fees with £1. 5m of that figure related to the £27m purchase of Wayne Rooney. However, Lord Stevens is expected to call for all Premiership clubs to release details of agents’ fees once he completes his investigation in December… Cutting down on killing timeWhen Steve McClaren took over as England manager, he declared he wanted to make the atmosphere around the national team more like a club. That’s one of the reasons behind a decision to cut down the amount of time England spend abroad on foreign trips. Instead of travelling to Croatia for next Wednesday’s Euro 2008 qualifier in Zagreb two days before the game – as was the practice under his predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson – McClaren and his team will fly out a day later on Tuesday. The aim is to make England duty more focused and intense for the squad and is designed to cut down on “hanging around time”. The FA are hoping that midweek European qualifiers will come to feel more like Champions League trips, which the majority of the England squad are used to playing with their clubs.

Kenny ready for rare start
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 10, 2006
Given had been the first name inked in by every Ireland manager for the past decade, and the thought of going into the autumn series of Euro 2008 qualifiers without him was unthinkable. However, one goalkeeper’s torn bowel muscle is the opening of the international door for another, and Paddy Kenny should double his number of starts for the Republic to six in Given’s enforced absence, beginning with… Carsley did say then he did not want to be considered again, but yesterday completed an about-turn. “If the call does come, whether it’s next week or next month, I’ll be ready for it,” he said. Kenny, meanwhile, has also been hampered of late by a thigh injury, though he returned for Sheffield United’s first league win of the season against Middlesbrough last Saturday. He has settled comfortably into the Premiership, and manager Neil Warnock said he would not swap him for David James, Paul Robinson or – intriguingly – Shay Given. “It’s nice to know someone has the confidence in you to say that,” Kenny said.

Evans enjoying the big time
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 10, 2006
He had hoped to break into United’s first team last season but was shipped out for further development in Belgium’s second tier, where he has been sent off twice in recent weeks. “I always set myself targets and the idea was to get in Manchester United’s first team before the end of last season,” he said yesterday. “It did not happen but that made me even more determined to succeed. Then two months later I was playing against Spain – things have happened pretty quickly. “Evans, 18, shares a room with Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes, the Aston Villa central defender who tomorrow collects his 50th cap… It also shows Aaron’s quality as captain of Northern Ireland. “Morten Olsen, the Denmark manager, has called up forward Michael Silberbauer as a standby should Dennis Rommedahl, of Charlton, fail a fitness test on a groin injury. Rommedahl scored in last month’s 2-0 victory over Iceland, Denmark’s first match of the Euro 2008 qualifying programme.
