getElementById( ‘frameId147807′ ). Doubts remain as to the Italian players’ state of mind, the fear that defeat tonight could shatter fragile confidence beyond repair. “The current crisis in Italian football does not involve the Italy football team or its staff,” insisted the Italian FA’s extraordinary commissioner Guido Rossi, but that sounds fanciful given that five of the squad are Juve players facing demotion. Lippi has remained upbeat, insisting over the weekend that he would shave his head should his team prevail in this competition – which could be taken either as a sign of ample confidence or none at all – but he hinted last night that he will play Francesco Totti, still an Italian icon, for this fixture after an ankle injury first sustained in February. The Roma playmaker insisted he was only “70% fit, but ready to play”.

Guardian Unlimited – Jun 12, 2006
After more than three hours of talks at the team hotel in the town of Wangen in southern Germany, Schäfer announced that he was going home. He said the Togolese had his telephone number and it was up to them to make the next move. “I am ready to become trainer if they accept my conditions; if that’s OK they can phone me,” he said. “If not it’s finished… Togolese officials initially said that Mawuena would stay in the job at least until the team’s first match. Schäfer subsequently indicated that he had encountered problems with Mawuena in the afternoon talks and said he did not want to force himself on anyone. The Togo players, most of whom play their club football with smaller European sides, have been holding out for €155,000 (£106,000) each to play in the tournament, plus €30,000 (£20,500) each per win and €15,000 (£10,000) per draw. Although this is a small fortune in a country where the average income is £206 a year, the players complain they have so far not received a penny. The row over the bonuses dogged much of Pfister’s three-month tenure with Togo. He took over in March to replace Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi, who was fired after the team’s poor performance in the African Nations Cup. At yesterday morning’s training session the players tried to put on a brave face.

Robben and Van Persie interchanging on the wings is looking a promising avenue of attack for Holland. 1900: BersonalAll credit to Ivory Coast. They were great entertainers and with a bit more luck could have gone far in this world cup. 1855: BluevaioNice game, I knew the Dutch would scrap a win. let us see how they do against Arg and then later on Portugal. They scored first, in such games one needs to score first and you gain the initiative… 1851: IluminatedIvory Coast are out. A tragedy as they tried to play football today. Holland play horrible, cynical football. 1830: Supersmooth83Ivory Coast look more likely to score now!!

1826: AwarenessVDV not playing well. hasn’t played much since his injury.

The debate has already started about Owen’s role in this World Cup, and it is clear he is still working his way back to fitness after playing only 30 minutes of Premiership football in 2006. But he remains the most natural striker England have in Germany, and it would be folly to even think of leaving him out. Owen remains England’s best bet for a goal, even when Wayne Rooney returns. The Newcastle striker must be left to play his way into the World Cup, as in Portugal in 2004, when he started to excel and create goals for Rooney in the group stages and scored a brilliant opener in the quarter-final against Portugal. He will also be taking note of the obituaries being penned about him… The debate has already started about Owen’s role in this World Cup, and it is clear he is still working his way back to fitness after playing only 30 minutes of Premiership football in 2006. France will struggle, they don’t create any chances. Barthez, Thuram, Zidane and Vieira – the end of a Golden era in French Football. 1852: julesthehammer
France must be the happier of the two sides. Switzerland deserved to win that game. 1845: Blue3000
I see some comparisons between France and the England team. They have some great players, but a manager who works against their strengths and doesn’t know how to get the best out of them

1841: fun2sh
I would say this has been one of the most boring football games of the whole tournament so far… He is better than Wiltord and Ribery combined. 1801: enyishine
I still believe that France have the upper hand and will definitely win the match. 1752: Old_Man_Jeeves
It looks like a continuation of the 2002 World Cup for France – don’t know how long they will have to wait to score a goal in the tournament. 1748: austinspur
Switzerland will be well pleased at holding France goalless in the first 45. They’ve strangled the game a bit, but they’ve done it efficiently and deserve to go in scoreless. 1746: Asamoah
Henry is by far the best player on the field – and France look dominant now – but I’m still going for a Swiss upset. They’re composed and all they need is one decent set-up and they’re through.

1418: The Pain
Both teams are using a lot of energy in this half. Almost end-to-end football taking place. Can expect it to be a slow and uninteresting 2nd half if they carry on like this in this heat. 1358: Hiro_Nagoya

Japan’s starting line-up is no surprise. This is the best formation, we should be able to win against Australia. Come on Japan! Ganbare Nippon!

1332: rmerrill

Been very much looking forward to this match. Japan play very attractive football, and Australia will be very motivated in their first appearance in over 30 years… This is the best formation, we should be able to win against Australia. Come on Japan! Ganbare Nippon!

Been very much looking forward to this match. Japan play very attractive football, and Australia will be very motivated in their first appearance in over 30 years. With both teams feeling like they need a win in this match to advance, it should be one of the best matches of the opening round. 1326: MystStreamer (SUMMERTIME!!)
Japan have got a good record against the Aussies, last three games all won with no goals conceded, so I fancy Japan for this. Narrow 1-0 to Japan. 1318: wondrousrm1
It should be a close game.

England won, earned three points and might get to play Ecuador in the second round. Oh, and they could go on to win the World Cup, because any team who can celebrate victory after playing as poorly as this clearly has luck on its side. England were certainly lucky to be playing Paraguay, because a better side would have beaten them. Time and again England got away with defensive hesitancy because their opponents needed a crash course in finishing. Despite being gifted their goal as early as the third minute, England never really looked like creating another and ended up protecting their lead with some desperate manoeuvres in their own penalty area. ‘We suffered,’ Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted… And Rooney’s games are being rationed from Manchester. The best bet might be to play him against Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday, because on this evidence England will need him if they have to beat Sweden. Paraguay are not Jamaica, of course, they have made it to the World Cup after all, but they went behind even earlier than last week’s friendly opponents and in exactly the same way. Joe Cole won a free-kick on the left, David Beckham pinged it in in that reliable way of his and the head of Carlos Gamarra put an own goal on the board after two minutes and 58 seconds. Within another five minutes Paraguay had lost their goalkeeper to injury and his replacement, Aldo Bobadilla, did not inspire confidence. His first act was to fail to reach a headed back-pass, his second was to be penalised under the six-second rule, conceding an indirect free-kick in the area from which Beckham and Gerrard failed to conjure a shot on target. Any thoughts of another 6-0 rout soon evaporated, however, for Paraguay were canny enough not to panic at going behind so early.

BBC SPORT | Football | World Cup 2006 | Mexico v Angola statistics
BBC News – Jun 16, 2006
90 + 2 mins: That is why Mexico don’t go route one. Francisco Fonseca mis-times his jump under a high ball and Joao Ricardo collects. 90 +1 min: Neat, patient football played at pace Mexican style but is it what you want when you need a late goal? Angola break down another move and run the ball to the opposite end of the pitch. 90 mins: It is all Mexico as they frantically look to break this deadlock. They have an extra three minutes to find a winner. 89 mins: Mexico have four men in attack and are throwing everything at the Angola goal. Omar Bravo gets on the edge of the cross from the left but his sliding effort cannons off the left post… “Mexico made a good start but dropped off after 30 minutes. Angola came into the game and if they throw a few more men forward and show ambition they’ve got a chance of nicking this because they have been frustrating Mexico. “Danny Mills, Five Live Sport

HALF-TIME: Certainly not the best entertainment of the World Cup but with it still deadlocked at 0-0 both teams will be eyeing a winning goal after the break. 45 mins: Guillermo Franco collects a cross with his back to goal but manages to turn and get a weak shot on goal which the on-rushing Joao Ricardo smothers. Jambo is close to the Villarreal striker and there is a hint of handball but nothing is given. 43 mins: Mexico eye a quick break but it is cut short when Rafael Marquez is cut down by Jamba. There was minimal contact but enough to earn the Angolan defender a yellow card that rules him out of the next match.
