Gallas tight-lipped in Chelsea row
Ireland Online – Jul 9, 2006
Gallas played his part in their Euro 2008 qualifying victory as France gained some revenge for their defeat to the Italians in the World Cup final in Germany this summer. But Gallas, accused by Chelsea of threatening to score an own goal if selected by the English champions, would not be drawn on the bitter row with his former employers. Chelsea also alleged that the 29-year-old twice refused to play for the Barclays Premiership champions during his long-running contractual dispute with the Blues. Gallas was eventually sold to Arsenal as part of the player-plus-cash deal which took England left-back Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge on deadline day. The French defender has already rejected Chelsea?s allegations and preferred to dwell on joining up with his new Arsenal team-mates rather than defend himself any further… ?I will see when I come back to London with my new team Arsenal. I?m very excited to train with them,? he told Sky Sports News. Arsenal have confirmed they will not be making an official complaint about Chelsea?s unprecedented attack on their former player while Gallas continues to contemplate taking legal action against the champions. Meanwhile, Cole has revealed how the chance to play alongside some of his England colleagues was a major factor in his decision to make the move to Stamford Bridge. Cole helped England to a 1-0 Euro 2008 qualifying victory over Macedonia on Wednesday night and the prospect of playing club football alongside Frank Lampard and John Terry ? a man he describes as ?a great captain? ? was too good to turn down.

IFA chief defends Sanchez

After the match he felt he had done his bit and I respect that. Let?s focus on the things that went right. ?Lawrie has done an outstanding job for us. He is contracted with us until the end of the campaign (Euro 2008) and is not under pressure from the IFA. ?

Italy coach blames lack of fitness
Ireland Online – Jul 9, 2006
While the French season started a month ago, and the English league, which provided much of the France team, has been in action for three weeks already, Serie A only commences this weekend. With the lion?s share of Donadoni?s squad playing for Serie A teams, the fact they have not yet played any competitive games was a defining factor in the 3-1 defeat in Paris, according to the man who replaced Marcello Lippi after the victorious World Cup campaign. ?We were at a disadvantage from the very beginning because of the preparation,? he told RAI television afterwards. ?They were a lot fresher than us and reached the ball quicker.

McClaren may need new script

After Saturday’s gentle blue run against Andorra, England must negotiate some moguls here in the Balkans. On a hard and bumpy pitch, with 16,000 locals screaming blue murder, England must stand firm. Those wearing the Three Lions on their shirts know all about Macedonia’s threat. Skopje’s youth come up to visitors here and mimic Artim Sakiri’s corner floating over David Seaman into the St Mary’s net four years ago… Skopje’s youth come up to visitors here and mimic Artim Sakiri’s corner floating over David Seaman into the St Mary’s net four years ago. “That finished Seaman,” smiled one Macedonian child proudly, pausing briefly on a battered bike. England have been warned, but not alarmed. McClaren and Terry Venables, and the dressing room’s guiding forces, Terry and Gerrard, have encouraged a “no excuses, no fear” culture. In word and defensive deed, Terry exudes determination. And never has a vice-captain held as much sway as Gerrard, the PFA Player of the Year and England’s main source of inspiration in Wayne Rooney’s absence. Terry has the armband, Gerrard the armoury.

German Soccer | 07.09.2006 Germany Knocks Out San Marino 13-0 in Euro…
Deutsche Welle – Jul 9, 2006
Coach Joachim Löw’s German team successfully fulfilled the expectations of the 5,000-strong crowd at the Stadium Olimpico in San Marino and dispatched the overmatched hosts 13-0. The match was one of 21 European Championship qualifying matches matches that took place on Wednesday. Not unusually, it took a while for the clear favorite to crack the defensive wall. Even after Lukas Podolski beat his defender and headed the ball into the net in the 11th minute, San Marino stood firm for another quarter of an hour. Löw acknowledged San Marino’s stiff resistance in that first half-hour, but was satisfied by his players’ reaction. “We had fun”

“We came into the match with a good attitude, a professional attitude even against such an opponent,” Löw said. “All in all, I think we saw lots of great goals and that we had fun.

Healy thrilled after shock win
Ireland Online – Jul 9, 2006
Manager Lawrie Sanchez, meanwhile, said nothing at all, preferring to keep his thoughts to himself as Healy and the rest of the side took a well-deserved lap of honour at Windsor Park. On the eve of the anniversary of the triumph against England in which he scored the winner, the Leeds striker savoured the moment. The victory was all the more unlikely given that Northern Ireland had lost to Iceland just four days earlier… Incredibly Healy sealed the points for Northern Ireland in the 79th minute when he completed his hat-trick with a cool finish. He lobbed the ball over Iker Casillas from 25 yards after a long clearance from goalkeeper Maik Taylor. Sanchez decided not to give a press conference and could now face a fine from UEFA. No reason was given but Irish Football Association chief executive Howard Wells said: ?It has been a difficult and traumatic time. ?Relations between Sanchez and the press have become slightly strained. A newspaper ran a front-page story on the day of the game about players enjoying a Saturday night out in Belfast. It is understood Sanchez gave them permission to leave the team hotel and no curfews were broken.

‘Dream team’ gives Dunga nightmares
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 9, 2006
Yet he is still worried. You would think it would be easy to be in charge of the world’s top-ranked team with Ronaldinho, the World and European player of the year, at your command, and Kaka, the AC Milan striker, in your dressing room. However, that is not the case for Dunga. “When I was just a player it was so different. Then all I had to do was to look after myself, and I was in bed by 9pm without a care in the world. But now I am the manager I am worried all the time about all the players. I sometimes don’t get to sleep before 3am because I am worried about having the best players in the world in my squad… The pressure is off on such a night and I can go out and express myself, everybody can. That is what we did. “John Toshack, the Wales coach, flew out to watch last night’s Group D match between Slovakia and the Czech Republic — who narrowly beat Wales 2-1 in their opening Euro 2008 qualifier on Saturday — right after the Brazil defeat. Toshack knows that his team are almost certain to be six points behind the group’s leaders by the end of the week, with Germany also taking on San Marino. It means that two wins from October’s home double-header against Slovakia and Cyprus have become crucial for Wales.

Trotters want Tristan
Ireland Online – Jul 9, 2006
The former Deportivo La Coruna player is available on a free transfer after having his contract with the La Liga club cancelled. And, although Allardyce admits the Trotters face competition in trying to attract the 30-year-old, he is hopeful of eventually being able to tie up a deal which would help strengthen a squad he was not able to bolster as much as he would have liked before the transfer window closed last month. ?We have an interest in Diego Tristan,? said Allardyce. ?He is a player with a very good track record who is available because of his situation at Deportivo. ?The difficulty for us is that a number of clubs may also be interested, who he could perceive to be bigger than we are or are offering more money, so we will see how we go on… 8m) new signing Nicolas Anelka is ready to make his Bolton debut against newly-promoted Watford at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, Allardyce could certainly do with some attacking reinforcements at present. Kevin Davies is already sidelined with a fractured cheekbone, while Stelios Giannakopoulos has now been ruled out for three weeks after picking up a groin injury training with Greece ahead of this week?s Euro 2008 qualifying win over Moldova. ?Stelios picked up a problem in Greece which will unfortunately keep him out for the best part of three weeks,? said Allardyce. ?It is a deep-lying injury which needs rest to enable it to settle down and allow Stelios to recover. It is a big disappointment for us because he was our leading goalscorer in the Premiership last season and he will be missed. ?
