England fans, the government says proudly, accounted for only 11% of all World Cup arrests. At home the BBC scrapped its big screens in Greenwich, Liverpool and Manchester after pissed-up trouble, and there was some fighting around the country after Ricardo’s exploits in the quarter-final penalty shootout – but not much. In total, 938 arrests here were ascribed to World Cup-watching. “English football supporters had a reputation for trouble,” a satisfied Home Office spokesman said. “We think we have lost that reputation now. “So what image do we have instead, after a month of fans in party mood but without the fighting which was so feared that a record number of banning orders (3,500) were issued before the tournament?Miles, who has been manning the FSF’s help and advice “embassies” at tournaments since France ’98, says the atmosphere is unrecognisable. “Where once England followers used to be the hooligan firm of every club in the country, now overwhelmingly it’s young lads out to have a laugh.

It showed a cynicism that needs to be outed. Biggest joy Seeing Ivory Coast, whom I desperately wanted to do well, play against Argentina with a refreshing spirit and Argentina looking to score a third goal rather than trying to close the match. It was two teams committed to vibrant, attacking football. Best match Germany v Italy. The game was technically outstanding, ebbed and flowed, and both teams had great individual performances and energy. Worst match Portugal v Angola. Angola conceded an early goal to Pauleta but made little attempt to win or even get back on terms… The Czechs were not great but Ghana could not settle the game until late on despite constant attack. Worst match England v Portugal. You would not have thought this was the quarter-final of the World Cup. I was not out of my seat once. Best quote “If only you had seen the two goals he scored in training on Friday, they were very good. ” Eriksson defends his decision to include Theo Walcott in his 23-man squad. England in one word Regrettable.

And never has it been more evident than in his pivotal contribution to Italy’s World Cup final win against France. I mentioned in one of my World Cup blogs that you should keep an eye on this boy because things happen when he is around. It’s safe to say he proved me right in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Materazzi fouled Florent Malouda for France’s early penalty, headed Italy’s equaliser, said or did something to cause Zinedine Zidane’s mind to blow and then stroked home a penalty in the shoot-out. Just another day at the office for a turbulent individual who is a cross between pantomime villain and consummate Italian defending elegance.

“I have never said I will stop. But I have a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) with the Italian Football Federation so we will see,” Lippi said at the final Italy press conference before the team leaves Germany to return to a rapturous welcome in Rome. Italy came into the World Cup in Germany under a cloud, with four top clubs including reigning champions Juventus embroiled in a match-fixing scandal, but the team gained in strength with each round of the tournament. Lippi said his players had realised they could win the World Cup once they topped their first-round group. “We said ‘We are not going to let this opportunity pass us by’. Italy won the final on spot kicks but it is destined to be remembered for the sensational sending-off for French captain Zinedine Zidane in the final match of his career.

The team’s plane touched down at a military airbase outside Rome shortly before an official parade through the capital’s historic centre which was to culminate in a giant party at the ancient Circus Maximus. But the team bus had first to negotiate some 30 kilometres of roads lined with ecstatic fans as it made its way into the city to keep an appointment with Prime Minister Romano Prodi, who was waiting to host an official reception for the Italy’s football heroes. Traffic ground to a halt as motorists stopped to catch a glimpse of the players and bellow their joy. The bus was followed by dozens of scooters and motorcycles trailing Italian flags… 0 percent of GDP required under eurozone rules by 2007. Pierluigi Bersani, minister for economic development, said the World Cup win would add a sweetener to the cuts, which the centre-left government admitted will be difficult for Italians to swallow. “There’s a feeling that if we can do it in football, we can certainly also do it in the economy,” he told reporters. “There’s a clear, measurable boost to business confidence, and probably to consumer spending as well, in the wake of something like this. We saw that when France won the World Cup eight years ago,” said Howard Archer, chief European economist for analysts Global Insight. “The question is how long it can be sustained?” he told AFP. “And you have to ask, how much is it a question of bringing forward spending that would have taken place anyway further down the line?”

“The best case scenario is that there will be a short-term boost to public spending, enabling unemployment to dip because companies will take on more workers to cope with the extra demand.

But the Australian insisted that their request does not amount to meddling in the internal affairs of Safa. “Fifa is not going to interfere, they just have a real interest in making sure that the team is successful, the same way it occurred in Germany.

‘We need to get back in the market to offer our advertising with a strong (autumn schedule of programmes). I have said several times I expect growth in TV advertising in the second half,’ he said. Mediaset’s first half advertising sales have been hit by the general election in April and the absence of rights to show World Cup football games. World Cup rights were held by state broadcaster RAI and News Corp satellite broadcasting unit Sky Italia. In other comments, Berlusconi said Mediaset continues to look at acquisitions, adding there is ‘nothing concrete’ concerning reports of its interest in Endemol, which Telefonica SA is looking to divest.
