Asian move works wonders for Matildas
The Age – Jul 28, 2006
Coach Tom Sermanni was struggling for words to describe theimprovement of his players while O’Neill said it was a vindicationof the move into a stronger football region from Oceania. “Absolutely fantastic, we’re very proud of our team, theMatildas have performed exceptionally well to get through to thefinal, which they’ve got to play on Sunday,” he said. “It’s a celebration to realise they’ll go through to the WorldCup in China next year but it’ll be a great contest againstChina. “Tom Sermanni, Cheryl Salisbury and all the girls have workedvery hard, haven’t had a goal scored against them in thetournament, and I think the move into Asia is a win-winsituation. “It was never going to be easy to qualify for events throughAsia, a lot harder than it used to be, but that’s what we wanted,we wanted higher level competition to prepare us for what might liebeyond this championship. O’Neill was more than happy to link the result to the Socceroos’heroics in the recently completed World Cup in Germany, pointingout the Australian public was still talking about it. “The mood around Australia, often when a big event finishes youmight still get the afterglow for maybe a week or 10 days, theafterglow of the Socceroos’ performance at the World Cup is stillaround,” he said.

Thursday’s decision saw the court rule against Premier Rugby Limited, the clubs’ umbrella organisation which was reluctant to release players for the 5 November Test against New Zealand.

Future Socceroos to come via ‘system’
The Age – Jul 26, 2006
It’s a burning issue, with as many as 10 Socceroos to soon hang up their boots, gutting the squad that captured the nation’s imagination with its fairytale World Cup run last month. Worse, there are few youngsters knocking at the door. O’Neill said the planned system would combine the best of overseas expertise with the kind of local know-how that transformed Australian sport from an Olympic Games minnow in the 1970s to the gold medal monster of today. The system will be based on new research by the Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Australian Sports Commission that aims to gain an edge on the international stage. “Punching above our weight is a national obsession, so designing and developing – or aligning – systems, expertise and infrastructure in Australia that can consistently identify and develop very competitive international players is a priority for us now,” O’Neill told the National Press Club in Canberra… Worse, there are few youngsters knocking at the door. BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Wrexham | Wrexham secure T&T…
BBC News – Jul 28, 2006
The right-sided midfielder, 24, must now return to Trinidad to obtain a work permit but no problems are anticipated as Johnson’s wife is British. Wrexham manager Denis Smith is hopeful that the player will return in time to be considered for the first game of the season at Wycombe on 5 August. Carlos Edwards kept Johnson out of the Soca Warriors’ World Cup squad. But he is seen as former Wrexham man Edwards’ heir apparent, having top-scored last season for the San Juan Jabloteh club – a team that produced ex-Dragon Hector Sam. T&T World Cup star Dennis Lawrence is also on the books at the Racecourse.

Sex and PS2 sessions sapped Ronaldinho
Register – Jul 27, 2006
®1England’s traditional inglorious exit from the World Cup is never attributed to coming up against a superior side or poor form. Previous excuses have included high humidity (Japan 2002), David Beckham (France 1998), inability to take penalties (Italia ’90), cheating Argentinians (Mexico ’86) and tight fitting football shorts (Spain ’82). BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Man Utd | Ferguson’s Ruud dilemma
BBC News – Jul 28, 2006
This was over-shadowed by Van Nistelrooy storming away before United’s final league game against Charlton – and subsequently being told he was not welcome at Keane’s testimonial. After the Charlton disappearing act, Ferguson explained: “There have been a couple of issues during the week that concerned us in terms of the spirit of the club. ”

Van Nistelrooy’s World Cup was a different story, dropped with some very public and pointed criticism from Holland coach Marco van Basten after scoring one goal and finding himself substituted in all three group games. Was this merely the result of an unsettled season at Manchester United or has Ferguson pitched it right and the once-great striker is in terminal decline?

If Ferguson has failed to make the right call – or does not have a credible alternative up his sleeve – it could deal a fatal blow to both United’s title ambitions and his own managerial longevity. Wayne Rooney, for all his brilliance, is not a natural marksman and will hover more in 15-20 goals a season territory. Alan Smith is recovering from a broken leg, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is working his way back from two years of injury – and Saha spends too much time in the sick bay. Van Nistelrooy’s departure does at least remove a brooding presence from United’s dressing room, having had public fall-outs with not just Ferguson, but also Cristiano Ronaldo.

As compensation for being ruled out of the 2007 ChampionsLeague, the seven other NZFC franchises will receive a greatershare of the US$1 million prize money on offer should Aucklanddefend their Oceania title come April. The seven franchises will split 60 percent of the potentialwindfall compared to 30 percent this year. NZ Soccer chief executive Graham Seatter is delighted Auckland’srivals have agreed to the process. “Whilst this outcome is not ideal, practically speaking it’s theonly option open to us,” Seatter said. “Every club felt that, given the constraints, the logicaldecision was for Auckland City to represent New Zealand again. BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Arsenal | Marseille keen to sign…
BBC News – Jul 27, 2006
But Diouf said there was still some way to go for the club to reach a deal for Campbell. “We cannot say at the moment that the contacts are strong enough between him and Marseille to say he will be with us next campaign,” he said. Campbell, who was part of England’s squad for the recent World Cup finals in Germany, had a mixed final season with the Gunners. He stormed out of Highbury after being substituted at half time against West Ham in February, which raised concerns about his future in the game, but he then went on to score in the Champions League final defeat at the hands of Barcelona in May. Last week, he told the News of the World that a move abroad would help him move “my football into a new realm”. “There are clubs interested in Italy, Spain, Germany and here at home but there is nothing finalised,” he said. Campbell made 197 appearances for Arsenal after arriving on a free transfer from local rivals Tottenham in 2001, and has won 68 England caps.
