BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Toshack warns Koumas over…
BBC News – Aug 7, 2006
We’ll wait and see who’s fit and who turns up Toshack on Bulgaria friendly

Toshack added: “We will see how the transfer unfolds and if he can get four or five games in before the Euro 2008 qualifier then okay. If not we have a problem. “If he does not have a club by the end of August he will be struggling and I don’t see how he can be involved. “But we have been waiting for something to happen and maybe the game between Cardiff and West Brom on Tuesday is having some sort of effect on the situation. “He should have gone back to West Brom and trained.

Kashtan leaves Nimni off squad
Jerusalem Post – Aug 8, 2006
The new coach, who took over from Avraham Grant in May, announced his first squad on Sunday at Israel Football Association headquarters in Ramat Gan. The team, which will train for a friendly against Slovenia on August 15 ahead of its first two Euro 2008 qualification matches early next month, does not include some notable names. Veterans Avi Nimni, Arik Benado, Alon Harazi and Adoram Keisi were all left off the team, while youngsters Aviram Baruchian and Amit Ben-Shushan were called up. “I believe in calling up young players and combining them with the veterans,” Kashtan said at a press conference. “I want them to soak up the atmosphere and play for the national team with their heads held high. The most surprising exclusion from the squad was of former captain Nimni.

BBC News – Aug 9, 2006
The timing of Brazil’s announcement caught the FAW unawares. An FAW spokesperson said: “We have heard nothing from Brazil for several weeks. ”

Wales open their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign away against the Czech Republic three days earlier, but have a free midweek date to fill if required. Wales return to Cardiff from the match in Teplice on Sunday 3 September, with the squad likely to leave immediately for London for the Brazil game. “There were some talks with an agent representing the Brazilians, but we have not heard anything for a while and assumed that the trail, so to speak, had gone dead,” added the FAW spokesperson. “To see that Brazil have announced the match without dealing with us for a while is surprising and rather confusing. ”

Wales have beaten Brazil, the five-times world champions, only once in their previous nine meetings.

Carrick reveals Gunners link

Sometimes it takes you down paths you don?t expect. ?Carrick?s present path has brought him to Old Trafford, where he should make his first home appearance in a United shirt tomorrow. Given Tottenham have not beaten the Red Devils away from home since Gary Lineker scored the winner in 1989, it seems unlikely Martin Jol?s side will break the sequence. However, even without Carrick and groin-injury victim Dimitar Berbatov, Spurs have enough quality in their ranks to threaten United?s 100% start to the season. No member of the home camp will need any reminding they also picked up nine points from the first three games 12 months ago, only to falter badly immediately after the September international break, drawing twice and losing at home to Blackburn… Before finalising his plans, the Scot will first need to check on the fitness of the members of his squad who have been away on international duty, plus Gary Neville, who missed England?s Euro 2008 qualifying wins over Andorra and Macedonia with a calf injury. Another man who has outside hopes of being involved is Alan Smith, who is now three reserve games into his comeback from the horror injury he suffered in the FA Cup defeat at Liverpool seven months ago. ?If the gaffer were to ask me if I would be ready for the bench against Spurs, I would say ?yes? without any hesitation,? Smith told the Manchester Evening News. ?Ninety minutes of Premiership football would be very difficult at the moment but to come on as a substitute would be no problem. ?If you are playing at Old Trafford, you get that adrenaline rush and that would see you through.

Ten-year tribute to Dons’ captain
BBC News – Aug 9, 2006
Anderson told BBC Scotland ahead of the game: “I have got to be honest and say I disagree with him, he’s being very polite and nice. “He’s been a great inspiration and a great captain. “He’s been good to me, it’s flattering, but I do not believe him. “I feel honoured the club has awarded me a testimonial. ”

Anderson is hoping to establish himself as a regular fixture in the national squad’s defence as Scotland prepare for the Euro 2008 qualifying bid… “He’s been good to me, it’s flattering, but I do not believe him. “I feel honoured the club has awarded me a testimonial. ”

Gerry Armstrong has stepped down as Northern Ireland’s assistant manager, citing personal and business reasons for his decision. Northern Ireland face Finland in Helsinki in a warm-up for the Euro 2008 qualifiers next Wednesday and Armstrong, whose wife Debby is pregnant, felt he could no longer give the job the time it required. He informed manager Lawrie Sanchez and the Irish Football Association of his decision. Armstrong said: ‘It is not in the best interests of the IFA or the team for me to continue. ‘I wish Lawrie and the team the best of fortune in the matches ahead and thank him and the IFA for giving me the opportunity of working with the squad. ‘
