Thatcher: brutal challenge
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 25, 2006
“The player will miss tomorrow’s home fixture with Arsenal. Ben Thatcher fully agrees with this decision. “Thatcher has also been charged by the Football Association with serious foul play. Thatcher, who was booked at the time by referee Dermot Gallagher, has until September 12 to respond. A statement from the FA read: “The incident is being considered as an exceptional case because the FA contends that the challenge was sufficiently serious that had Thatcher been sent off, an additional sanction would have been merited.

BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Windsor ruled out as Derry venue
BBC News – Aug 25, 2006
The Derry boss, who thinks that as many as 5,000 fans could travel to the Parc des Princes, admits it is another big step up for his side but is not ruling anything out at this stage. “It captures the imagination of Derry and Ireland generally so from that point of view it is great. “They have lots of players that played in the recent World Cup and players with lots of pedigree but we want to make sure we do well. “It is too early for us to say because we haven’t analysed them or looked at videos, so we will have to do that before we can make realistic judgements. ”

Paris Saint-Germain club president Alain Cayzac said his team would be “wary” of the Eircom League side. “On paper, it seems like a good draw but we know they can score goals, so they will have good forwards,” said the PSG official.

Mixed reaction to Okocha recall
BBC News – Aug 27, 2006
Okocha retired from international football after Nigeria finished third at the 2006 Nations Cup in Egypt. But coach Austin Eguavoen brought him back following injuries to Lazio striker Ayodele Makinwa and Chidi Odiah, who features for Russian club CSKA Moscow. Former internationals Best Ogedegbe and Ajibade Babalade said Okocha still has a lot to offer the Super Eagles. “I have always said that Okocha still has a lot to offer this country,” said former international goalkeeper Ogedegbe. “I also believe the player can still play for the country for at least two or three years more before he can retire… Young players need to learn more under him. ”

Ajibade Babalade said: “Eguavoen has made the right decision by recalling Okocha. “If France can recall Zinedine Zidane for the World Cup and the player single handedly took the team to the final, then Okocha’s case should not be different. ”

However, former coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who took the team to the 2002 World Cup finals, declined to comment on Okocha’s recall. “Eguavoen is the man in charge of the team now and he knows why he recalled Okocha,” Onigbinde said.

BBC News – Aug 25, 2006
The 33-year-old is in France’s squad for games against Georgia and Italy, despite announcing his retirement after the World Cup final loss to Italy. Domenech wants Makelele to play and any player who refuses an international call-up can be hit with a domestic ban. And Domenech insisted: “We still have the law for us. ”

Domenech added: “We had a discussion with Makelele but I didn’t ask for his opinion.

Sport in my World: Speechless when face-to-face with hero Whiteside
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 26, 2006
They had the misfortune to draw Feyenoord, and the sight of their spindly-legged players going into battle against a side containing several members of Holland’s World Cup squad was almost as memorable as the 9-1 defeat. Out in the country, The Troubles did not impinge on us too acutely. To follow football in Coleraine certainly made a refreshing alternative to the terrifying world of sectarian support in Belfast, where attending a game could be truly scary. By the mid-Seventies I was travelling to Belfast to watch the Northern Ireland side, and in the footage of George Best’s disallowed goal against England you can just make out my father and I, pressed up against the railings at Windsor Park. For these matches my father became known among my friends as “stupid, stupid, stupid”, as this was invariably what he said when the referee made a decision with which he disagreed.

No Secret About the Name of the Game
Washington Post – Aug 27, 2006
Comcast, which recently signed a cease-fire agreement with MASN to show Nats games, paid $20 million for the naming rights to Maryland’s basketball arena. FedEx paid the Redskins $205 million over 27 years for the naming rights to the 92,000-seat par- tay palace in Landover. M&T Bank paid $75 million to have its name on the football stadium in Baltimore that should be named for Johnny Unitas. We have Verizon Center in downtown Washington that used to be MCI Center but should be the Abe Pollin Center. Old schoolers like me would just prefer Byrd Stadium, named for the late Maryland president (from 1935 to ’54) Harry Clifton "Curley" Byrd, who in his day hired coaching giants Bear Bryant (1945), Clark Shaughnessy (1946) and Jim Tatum (1947-55). Tatum delivered Maryland’s only national football championship in 1953. As for my alma mater, the University of Florida, I still don’t know why or how Florida Field became Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field, or who Ben Hill Griffin Jr… “I had a great eight years coaching the national team,” Arena said. “Years from now, we’ll be given high marks for what we did. The disappointment at this World Cup stemmed from some people being fooled by our previous success. “Of returning to MLS, Arena said, “Coaching is what I do. “Extra Points· If some of his Redskins teammates weren’t so gracious, let me personally welcome 254-pound running back T.

Soccer: Europe’s fractured state of play
International Herald Tribune – Aug 27, 2006
Barely is the World Cup forgotten than the Euro 2008 qualifiers begin. Barely have the domestic leagues begun than the star players are recalled to national duty. Compounding this, players in the French, English, German, Spanish and Italian competitions are at different fitness levels. The leading team in France, Lyon, racked up its third victory in four matches with a powerful 4-1 away win in Nice on Saturday. In England, Manchester United made it three wins in three games, with Ryan Giggs scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 score at Watford.

McClaren’s England plan taking shape
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 26, 2006
A marginally tougher encounter faces England the following Wednesday against Macedonia in Skopje, where they struggled to win 2-1 in a Euro 2004 qualifier in September 2003. At the back of McClaren’s mind might be the fact that England have traditionally performed badly in September fixtures, which was why he wanted the Greece friendly before the start of the season. That 4-0 win has, like many England performances, been blown out of all proportion, as if it somehow compensated for the poverty of this summer’s World Cup performances. McClaren side-stepped the bandwagon by saying: “It was an encouraging start for me. The way we play is not set in stone. We mustn’t think that one formation, that one way that we played, is the be all and end all and we’ve found the answer. “Even so, Saturday’s starting line-up is likely to be the same as against Greece, with the exception of the injured Gary Neville at right back… If his place goes to his recalled brother, Phil, the only difference on the team sheet will be a single initial, although McClaren is also considering Charlton’s Luke Young. Michael Carrick, who made a cameo appearance against Ecuador in the World Cup, is back in the squad after injury, though one presumes only as a back-up to Owen Hargreaves in the holding role. And Andy Johnson’s move to a more prestigious football address at Everton has done the trick in earning him a recall. McClaren said: “I spoke to Everton manager David Moyes about him and I watched him in midweek. He’s a goalscorer, he’s quick. He gets beyond defenders and he takes his chances but, especially, he’s a team player. When I watched him the other night, he led the line well.

Just playing the game
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 27, 2006
The concurrence of a number of events this summer has created the impression that greed, deception and contempt for the rules are now endemic in almost every sport. The twin dismissals of Zinedine Zidane for head-butting an opponent and Wayne Rooney for a groin-crunching challenge symbolised this depressing climate of anarchy. Drug abuse appears to be rife among leading professionals. US cyclist Floyd Landis could be stripped of his Tour de France title for taking a male sex hormone, while top American sprinters Marion Jones and Justin Gatlin, the World and Olympic 100 m champion, are facing long bans after testing positive for banned substances. Horse-racing, once the sport of kings, is now awash with allegations of bribery, prompting the suspension of the leading jockey Kieren Fallon.

And Celtic made Hibs pay for that miss thanks in part to the promptings of McGeady. He sent Naylor down the left and his cross was fired home by Zurawski. Vennegoor of Hesselink showed the predatory instincts that led to his inclusion in the Netherlands World Cup squad by reacting to McGeady’s shot to put Celtic ahead. Celtic: Marshall, Wilson, Caldwell, McManus, Naylor, Nakamura (Sno 90), Lennon, Pearson, McGeady, Miller (Vennegoor of Hesselink 52), Zurawski. Subs Not Used: McGovern, Beattie, Cuthbert, Jarosik, Telfer. Goals: Zurawski 62, Vennegoor of Hesselink 66.

Wenger has plans for Walcott
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 26, 2006
Walcott was a shock selection for Sven Goran-Eriksson’s England squad yet he failed to feature, and Wenger admitted that had an adverse affect on the forward. “The fact that he comes on and does well is fantastic. Remember, he’s only 17 years old. He should be playing in the under-18s tomorrow. “He’s not far away from me giving him an opportunity.

Rugged, Rowdy Appeal Of Rugby
Washington Post – Aug 25, 2006
“People have preconceptions that rugby is this hyper-barbaric game where people break their bones all the time, but it’s really not that dangerous,” he says. Developed in early 19th-century England, rugby pits two teams of 15 players against each other on a pitch, or playing field. Players lateral (a backward toss) the ball to each other while dodging tacklers, vying to score “tries” — like a touchdown in football — by carrying the ball into the opposing team’s “in goal area. “Fortunately, Olympian talent is not a prerequisite. “There are some very good athletes on rugby fields, but unlike soccer, it’s okay to be clumsy in this game,” says James Thompson, president of the Washington Irish, noting that each club fields both “A-side” and “B-side” teams — akin to varsity and junior varsity squads. “You don’t have to be able to throw a ball 95 mph or hit it out of Fenway Park,” he says. “If you can make a five-yard pass and run your butt off, you can play rugby.
