Soccer: Europe’s fractured state of play
International Herald Tribune – Aug 27, 2006
Barely is the World Cup forgotten than the Euro 2008 qualifiers begin. Barely have the domestic leagues begun than the star players are recalled to national duty. Compounding this, players in the French, English, German, Spanish and Italian competitions are at different fitness levels. The leading team in France, Lyon, racked up its third victory in four matches with a powerful 4-1 away win in Nice on Saturday. In England, Manchester United made it three wins in three games, with Ryan Giggs scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 score at Watford… Hargreaves is sounding like a spoiled child whose word was only a means of securing his future until he got a better offer. Understandably, he wants to play in the English league because his father was born there, and he chose to play for England. Yet Uli Höness, Bayern's general manager, bluntly tells him he will not be allowed to renege on his deal. "I advise Owen to keep his mouth shut or I will get really angry, and that won't be very good for him," Höness reportedly told the newspaper Bild. "He will not be allowed to leave, and he must learn to accept the decisions of his bosses. "Respect seems to be crumbling on both sides. Bayern sits him on the bench, negotiates to buy Mark van Bommel from Barcelona and no doubt awaits a higher United offer.

Aston Villa to clinch Petrov deal
BBC News – Aug 28, 2006
Celtic boss Gordon Strachan confirmed talks had taken place with his predecessor more than a week ago about Petrov – but claimed that the player would not be moving to Villa. However, Petrov was not included in Saturday’s squad for the 2-1 win over Hibernian and did not feature at Inverness the week before. Petrov, who is preparing for Euro 2008 qualifiers against Romania and Slovenia, is contracted to the Scottish champions until 2010 but submitted a transfer request at the end of last season. The transfer window closes on 31 August and, now that O’Neill has the confirmed financial backing of American tycoon Lerner, Villa have been able to meet Celtic’s asking price. And Celtic appear to have lined up Danish international Thomas Gravesen as a replacement for Petrov.

France forcing Makelele to continue
Monday, 28 August 2006 08:53

Chelsea are to hold top-level talks with the French Football Federation to try and persuade the governing body Claude Makelele should be allowed to retire from international football. The midfielder, 33, who had a hand in the 2-0 victory against Blackburn, said he was bringing the curtain on his international career down after the World Cup. However, France coach Raymond Domenech has refused to accept his decision and named him in his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Georgia and Italy. In a statement following the game at Ewood Park, the club said: ‘We will be making further representations to the French Football Federation, after discussions with Claude Makelele, regarding his desire to retire from international football. ‘Chelsea believe that a player should have the freedom to choose about his own international career, especially in the case of Claude who has served his country at the highest level and with distinction for several years. ‘This view was expressed to the French national coach Raymond Domenech in a meeting last week at our training ground. ‘We understand the letter of the law is very clear on this subject, and the ramifications for Claude and Chelsea if he is called up but does not play… ‘This view was expressed to the French national coach Raymond Domenech in a meeting last week at our training ground. ‘We understand the letter of the law is very clear on this subject, and the ramifications for Claude and Chelsea if he is called up but does not play. ‘We would like to stress that this is not a club versus country issue, we are not seeking conflict with the FFF. ‘This issue is about supporting the wishes of one of our players whose past commitment to his country cannot be called into question. ‘
Before the statement was released Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed on Sky Sports 1 that Makelele was being treated ‘like a slave’. Later in his press conference the Chelsea boss added: ‘Makelele wants to retire but the coach does not allow him to retire.

Ferdinand scan raises McClaren’s hopes

The 27-year-old injured his foot while clearing the ball in United’s 2-1 win at Watford on Saturday. After the match Sir Alex Ferguson cast doubt on his chances of recovering in time for England’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Andorra at Old Trafford on Saturday, and the trip to Macedonia the following Wednesday. But after a scan yesterday there was a major boost for Ferguson and new England manager Steve McClaren, as tests showed he had only suffered bruising to the little toe of his right foot. He will have his foot reassessed today before a final decision is made on whether to allow him to join England later in the week… Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness and club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have both insisted that the England star must see out the four years left on his contract at the Allianz Arena. But the German champions thrashed out an £8 million move for Barcelona star Van Bommel over the weekend and the Dutch midfielder claims Bayern want him to fill the gaps left by Michael Ballack and wantaway Hargreaves. Van Bommel said: “I have left Barcelona because there were not enough guarantees that I would play every week. But at Bayern Munich the chances of playing are so much bigger, they told me, with Michael Ballack gone and Owen Hargreaves close to leaving the club.

The new manager, whose team face their first Euro 2008qualifiers next week, said he wanted to forge closer links withPremier League clubs and had talked to the outspoken Portuguesecoach after watching a Chelsea training session. “I had a good chat with Jose. Having a team ethic is the mostimportant thing. Since he came to this country, that’s all he’stalked about – the team ethic and the work ethic of theplayers. “That’s the model of great teams and that’s what we want to be,”McClaren told reporters this week… 6 “I’ve told the players they are running two agendas,” McClarensaid. “They’re not just at a club, they are running the Englandagenda and I want them to run parallel. McClaren has told Arsenal forward Theo Walcott that he must wina regular place with the Gunners to return to the England squad. The coach instead picked Everton’s Andy Johnson. Carrick eyes England place
Independent Online – Aug 28, 2006
The 25-year-old midfielder recovered from a knee injury to make his first Premiership start for United on Saturday as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side strengthened their grip at the top of the table with a 2-1 win at Watford. The victory – achieved thanks to goals from Mikael Silvestre and Ryan Giggs – maintained the Red Devils’ 100 percent start to the campaign, but Carrick already has his eye on a starting berth for England’s opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Andorra at Old Trafford on Saturday. ‘It’s up to me and how well I play’”If you’re playing on the biggest stage, like the Champions League, it is going to give you the best possible chance to perform at the highest level. “Of course, it’s up to me and how well I play, but I’d hope to be involved in the game against Andorra… ‘It’s up to me and how well I play’”If you’re playing on the biggest stage, like the Champions League, it is going to give you the best possible chance to perform at the highest level. “Of course, it’s up to me and how well I play, but I’d hope to be involved in the game against Andorra. ”

Should Carrick play, it would be his first appearance at Old Trafford since joining United from Tottenham in July – but his club-mate Rio Ferdinand will not be involved in the qualifier. Ferdinand was due to have a scan today after sustaining a suspected broken toe in the closing stages of the match at Watford. Carrick – who has been at the club for almost a month – continued: “The basic set-up here is pretty much the same as at Spurs, but this is just such a massive club. ‘The expectation is huge’”I had an idea of the size of it before I joined, but it just hits you when you arrive. “The expectation is huge – and you have to win at all costs.

Polak had been expected to adopt Pavel Nedved’s midfield role following the Juventus player’s international retirement, so Sparta Prague’s Tomas Sivok could be given a chance. Like Cech, Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky has been sidelined by injury but has also been deemed fit enough for selection. “We know that Rosicky does not play now, but we have guarantees that in 10 days he should be fit,” Bruckner said. “The same goes for Cech, whose recovery continues very quickly. ”
