Sensational scenes. “You’ve got to hand it to the manager and the players gave 110%. It amazes me that David Healy is not playing in the Premiership – the first goal was instinctive and the third was superlative. This is better than the England result. “Billy Hamilton, BBC Sport NI

“A fantastic performance. I knew they hand goals in them and it was great entertainment. The whole performance, as a unit, was tremendous.

Joorabchian went public with that ambition yesterday, telling the stock exchange he has not ruled out making a bid. He claims there are no clauses forcing Pardew to field the pair and the manager stressed he would not tolerate any other arrangement. Guardian Service Concern over pitch Uefa has ordered Lithuania to improve the pitch at the Darius ir Girenas Stadium for tonight’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Scotland after midfielder Nigel Quashie said it resembled a “superbike track”. Walter Smith’s team trained at the stadium yesterday and found it to be heavily rutted in many places – with the Scotland manager understood to be furious over the conditions as his side look to build on Saturday’s 6-0 impressive demolition of the Faroe Islands. Uefa shared the Scots’ unhappiness and have ordered the Lithuanian FA to improve the pitch before kick-off. Guardian Service Almunia for England Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is determined to become the regular Arsenal number one again – and earn himself a call-up for England. The 29-year-old Spaniard joined Arsenal in July 2004 from Celta Vigo, and in another two years will qualify for British residency… Fifa regulations state that so long as a player over the age of 21 has not represented their country of birth at any level, then they are free to switch international associations. “I am 100 per cent sure if I win my place with Arsenal and play for the first team, then I will play for Spain one day,” Almunia told Arsenal TV Online. “But if not, in two years I can be English, take the nationality and then I can play for England. If someone wants me, I do not care about the nationality. ” Live showdown The first managerial clash of Wolves manager Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane is to be broadcast live on Sky TV. McCarthy’s Wolves will take on Keane’s Sunderland at Molineux on Friday, November 24th, with an 8pm kick-off, with the game having been rearranged to accommodate the broadcaster. Lerner’s nervous wait Randy Lerner is on the brink of completing a 100 per cent buyout of Aston Villa – but he could face a nervous fortnight.

National team wins without Nedv?d
Prague Post – Sep 6, 2006
The 25-year-old Jablonec striker, who wore former captain Pavel Nedvěd’s jersey, No. 11, almost single-handedly won the Czech Republic’s opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales in Teplice, north Bohemia, Sept. Coming off the bench with only 15 minutes remaining, and the game still goalless, Lafata scored with his first touch, heading home Libor Sionko’s pass. The euphoria soon disappeared after the tough Welshmen hit back and caused Czech defender Martin Jiránek to score an own goal in the 85th minute. But, in the final minute, Lafata booted in another cross by Sionko, securing the team a 2?1 win… Lafata replaced another newcomer to the Czech team, Mladá Boleslav striker Marek Kulič. Kulič had a strong performance and kept the Welsh defense busy for 75 minutes. “The performances of our newcomers indicated that we do not need to worry about the future and that there will be enough high-quality players on our team after past leaders have retired,” said defender David Rozehnal. The game against Wales started a new era for the team. After the failure at the World Cup in Germany in June, the team is going through a transitional period, with many older players expected to leave. One of the brightest stars, Chelsea goalie Petr Čech, said the squad proved its confidence and determination against Wales. “We were ready to battle for the win until the last minute, and not even a late own goal changed anything about that,” he said.

England have so many great players going forward, you have just got to get the balance right and the personnel right and you are in business. England have got Joe Cole to come back in, and Wayne Rooney to return and they will then have a really formidable line-up. And McClaren’s not going to leave Crouch out when he is scoring for fun. Any defender is going to find it difficult against someone of his height. England will have to get around the fact that Crouch is never going to test people in behind them, but you have got Rooney to come in, who is brilliant in the position just off the striker. England have still got great players, despite the disappointment of the World Cup. It is getting the formation right and making sure they are playing well when they reach the finals – because England will reach the Euro 2008 finals.

BBC News – Sep 6, 2006

Scotland defender Steven Pressley had a double reason to celebrate after winning his 30th cap. “It is a proud moment to break Bobby Walker’s record and become the most-capped Hearts player,” he said. “Italy, France and Ukraine will not find it easy to come here and win.

Germany hammers San Marino 13-0 in Euro 2008 qualifying
International Herald Tribune – Sep 6, 2006
Klose then used a perfect through ball from Ballack to make it 6-0 second before halftime. Less then two minutes into the second half, Schweinsteiger drove in a free kick from outside the penalty box. Podolski and Hitzlsperger then alternated in scoring as San Marino could not keep up with the pace of the Germans. Friedrich scored his first goal for Germany before Schneider converted a penalty in the 88th for the final goal. Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann first wanted to take the penalty but then returned to his goal and let Schneider shoot. “Our fans wanted me to shoot but I thought that it might be considered a humiliation and the San Marino players were also calling for fair-play so I went back. It was better that way ,” the Arsenal goalkeeper said.

Russia and Croatia draw 0-0 in Euro 2008 qualifier
International Herald Tribune – Sep 6, 2006
“We should have beaten at home our main rival in the group,” Russia soccer federation head Vitaly Mutko said. “But the second half proved that we have a good young team. ” Russia’s first shot on goal came in the 13th minute and it never really threatened Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa in the first half afterward. Croatia’s first chance came in the third minute when striker Eduardo Da Silva crossed from the left. But Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev cut out the ball to deny defender Milan Rapaic a shot on goal. A free kick by Rapaic hit the post in the 51st.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Sanchez rings changes for NI…
BBC News – Sep 6, 2006
Defender Jonny Evans will make his debut, striker Kyle Lafferty gets his first competitive start while Michael Duff and Roy Carroll also come in. Maik Taylor, Tony Capaldi, Stuart Elliott and James Quinn are dropped following the 3-0 defeat to Iceland. Chris Baird moves from full-back to a holding midfield role. Baird’s positional switch, which gives added protection to the defence, means Sanchez is going with a 4-1-3-2 formation for the Group F encounter.

Kevin Nolan column
BBC News – Sep 6, 2006
You cannot play fantastic football in every game and win a tournament like that, it just doesn’t happen. Italy went on and won it but they were by no means brilliant every game, whereas Argentina played great football but ended up going home before England. As Euro 2008 qualifying starts, we are already hearing a lot of talk about Uefa putting the smaller teams into a separate pool to compete for the right to be in groups with the likes of England… I have imagined what it would be like just to take part in an England training session with so many world-class players, the guys I compete against week-in, week-out. My manager at Bolton, Sam Allardyce, has always been very supportive of my cause and it is always a boost to hear him say I should be in the England squad. He is not stupid, he knows if he builds up my confidence I will play better football and I am the sort of player who needs an arm around my shoulder from time to time, which Sam is very good at. I said to him last season that if he ever got the England job he had better put me in his first squad!

My name has also been mentioned with playing for the Republic of Ireland but there are just too many complications with that one. I have spoken to their manager Steve Staunton a couple of times but it was just one of those things that did not work out for various reasons. YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Kevin, if Bolton had the same amount of money as Chelsea, who would be your ideal partner in midfield?

Matthew, Bolton

Steven Gerrard, no question, out of anyone in the world, Steven Gerrard. He is just someone I would love to play with, I think he has got everything as a player and he would suit the way we play fantastically.

The match had already been billed as a revenge mission for the French after their World Cup final defeat on penalties in July. But if that, and former captain Zinedine Zidane?s infamous headbutt on Italy defender Marco Materazzi, were not enough to stoke the fires of discontent before kick-off, the neighbours and perennial rivals have also resorted to trading insults in the build-up. Italian bulldog Gennaro Gattuso has described the French as bad losers, ahead of the crunch group B battle. ?When we lost the Euro 2000 10 seconds from the end, we didn?t go around moaning about it afterwards,? said Gattuso… ?
France head into the match as favourites after recording an impressive 3-0 win at Georgia on Saturday, while Italy were embarrassingly held to a 1-1 draw at home by minnows Lithuania. And with the Italian league yet to begin, many of the Italian players are lacking in match practice this season. Italy coach Roberto Donadoni, however, will not be panicked into any rash decisions. ?I?m am not going to make any changes for the match against France,? said Donadoni. ?I?m proud of the players and the whole squad. ?
Meanwhile, England seem more worried by potential racist chanting than their opponents in their next outing against Macedonia in Skopje. The Macedonian FA was fined by Uefa after England?s black players were verbally abused during a Euro 2004 qualifier in September 2003.

Scotland take maximum reward
Irish Times – Sep 6, 2006
The Celtic striker might not have scored for his new club yet but his second in two international matches proved to be the winner, after a booking ruled him out of the game with France. Scotland started Group B with a 6-0 romp against the Faroe Islands on Saturday and veteran defender Christian Dailly and Miller put the country helped them to six points today. They had to sweat it out, however, after Darius Miceika’s stunning late consolation. David Weir became the latest entrant to the Scottish Football Association Hall of Fame by winning his 50th cap but Kris Boyd, who scored twice against the north Atlantic part-timers, was dropped to the bench as Smith adopted a more cautious approach by calling on Gary Caldwell.

Govou the surprise as France downs Italy 3-1
International Herald Tribune – Sep 6, 2006
Domenech was criticized for selecting Govou as a late callup when Djibril Cisse broke his leg the day before France left for the World Cup. Govou made only brief appearances as a substitute during the tournament in Germany, and did not play in the July 9 final. The win gave France six points in two games in Euro 2008 qualifying, putting it five points ahead of Italy in Group B. Govou left the field at the Stade de France to a standing ovation and received a high-five from Domenech. He has five goals in 24 games.

Israel to ‘host’ Andorra in Holland
Jerusalem Post – Sep 6, 2006
The national team is coming off a 1-0 win against Estonia in Tallinn on Saturday and will be extremely confident of maintaining its perfect record. The Andorrans have lost all 19 of their previous European championships qualifiers and have only two professional players in their squad. “I don’t underestimate any team and I don’t like questions that imply that we take the Andorrans lightly,” Israel coach Dror Kashtan said at a press conference Tuesday. “I respect every team we play… “The game was difficult. We scored an early goal and then we had to defend,” Israel captain Yossi Benayoun said after Saturday’s match. “This was not our best game, but Colautti proved he is a great striker and Awat played very well. Israel has got the perfect opportunity to put Saturday’s troubles behind it when it comes up against the Andorrans. The team that represents a country of 67,000 people lost to England 5-0 on Saturday, a score that Kashtan will be happy to replicate. “Andorra plays a very defensive game and that will make our life difficult,” Kashtan said Tuesday. “We need to try and improve with every match we play.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Partnership can work -…
BBC News – Sep 6, 2006
Welsh boss John Toshack says the diminutive duo will play together in next month’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Slovakia and Cyprus. And Earnshaw told BBC Sport: “I can’t wait. It is great that he has confidence in me now – and believes that Bellers and I can score goals. “We will do everything we can to repay that faith. ”

Earnshaw and Bellamy partnered each other up front in Wales’ 2-0 defeat by Brazil at White Hart Lane on Tuesday… “They didn’t give us any time on the ball but we coped well and looked decent going forward – although they were massive at the back. “The manner of the performance has given the boys a boost. It is not every day you get to play against these players and it took our minds off Saturday. “We know we could have played better against the Czechs and that we conceded two poor goals. This was the perfect game to wipe our memory of that and get back to how we can play. “Now we are ready for our next games in a month’s time. We want to win both of them but we know it will be very tough.

RTÉ Sport: Miller makes Manchester United admission
rte.ie – Sep 6, 2006
‘I am very happy to be here and training and just to fight for my place in the team. ‘
Miller joined United from Celtic on a free transfer during the summer of 2004, but managed just 11 starts, only three of them in the Barclays Premiership. Signed as a potential successor to Keane, he tasted Champions League football at Old Trafford, but could not force his way into Alex Ferguson’s plans often enough for his liking. Miller was away with the Republic of Ireland squad preparing for Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Germany when Keane’s call came. However, he admitted his mind was made up virtually on the spot. He said: ‘When I got the phone call, my decision was pretty much made there and then, to be totally honest. ‘I was training with the international team, and they were very good to let me come over and speak to Sunderland, and it was done and dusted within a couple of hours… ‘
