"Spain are a better side than our opponents, but they have dealt us a severe blow that has made qualification for Euro 2008 more difficult. "But I’m not thinking about giving up the post. I’m happy in the job and keen to continue, just as I was when I decided to continue after the World Cup. Hat-trick hero Healy said the win over Spain answered the criticism heaped on the team after the defeat by Iceland. “We let down people on Saturday but what was written got a little bit out of hand,” said Healy after Wednesday’s amazing Euro 2008 qualifier victory. “We showed our character more than anything tonight and that should be a lesson for everybody. “We wanted to put a bit of pride back in the Northern Ireland jersey. ”

The Northern Ireland fans booed the players after Saturday’s defeat and Healy acknowledged that the reception had “disappointed” the players. After the Iceland defeat, manager Lawrie Sanchez blamed the media for raising false expectations about his team and hat-trick hero Healy also alluded to this issue after Wednesday’s win.

French avenge Cup defeat with 3-1 win
Taipei Times – Sep 8, 2006
PHOTO: AP France gained a small measure of revenge for their World Cup final defeat by beating Italy 3-1 in Paris in the heavyweight clash of the Euro 2008 qualifiers on Wednesday. But it was Germany who made most heads turn, recording the biggest ever victory on their travels with a 13-0 demolition of hapless San Marino. The shock of the night came in Belfast as Northern Ireland bounced back from a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Iceland on Saturday to stun Spain 3-2 echoing memories of their glory night in the 1982 World Cup finals when they beat the Spanish hosts 1-0. England continued their steady progress under new coach Steve McClaren with a 1-0 win at Macedonia and Netherlands showed a marked improvement in dismissing Belarus 3-0 at home. Want-away Lyon forward Sidney Govou got France off to a dream start despite not having played for his club side this season, volleying home a William Gallas cross in the second minute… The shock of the night came in Belfast as Northern Ireland bounced back from a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Iceland on Saturday to stun Spain 3-2 echoing memories of their glory night in the 1982 World Cup finals when they beat the Spanish hosts 1-0. Israel Begins Ending Lebanon Blockade Ships To Stay For Awhile, But…
CBS News – Sep 7, 2006
As it taxied down the runway, someone in cockpit waved a large red-and-white Lebanese flag, with its distinctive green cedar tree emblem, out a window. The naval blockade will continue, an Israeli official said, until international forces arrive. Not everyone in Israel is happy about the decision to end the blockade, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger. The families of two Israeli soldiers kidnapped in Lebanon are angry over Israel’s decision to lift the blockade. They say Prime Minister Ehud Olmert broke a promise that the blockade would not be lifted until Israel received information about the captive soldiers. Bowing to pressure from the United Nations and others, Israel said international forces would take over the task of preventing arms shipments from reaching Hezbollah guerrillas. Israel imposed the air, land and sea blockade shortly after the 34-day war against the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah erupted on July 12, when reserve soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were seized on the border… Israeli soccer midfielder Yossi Benayoun says the Andorran national coach told him during Wednesday night’s match in the Netherlands that “your country is a nation of killers. ” Benayoun says one of the Andorran players apologized. Israel won the Euro 2008 qualification game, 4-1. A statement from Olmert’s office the day before said Israel would lift the Lebanon blockade as of 6 p.

‘Your country is a nation of killers’
Jerusalem Post – Sep 7, 2006
com staff , THE JERUSALEM POST Sep. 7, 2006″Your country is a nation of killers and all the time there are only wars there,” Andorra national soccer coach David Rodrigo allegedly told Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun during Wednesday night’s Euro 2008 qualification game in Holland, in which. Benayoun claimed that when he confronted Rodrigo over the comments, the Andorran coach snapped, “shut up! We are going go break you and break your legs. When Israel took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the game, Benayoun mocked the coach, putting two fingers up in his direction… “The government of Andorra totally disassociates itself from this, and we condemn these insulting remarks,” the government spokesperson told the Post. A member of the Andorran Jewish community told the Post by phone that she was shocked at the outburst, but not totally surprised. “By his name, I see that the soccer coach is Spanish, not Andorran. He is like that because in Spain there is anti-Semitism. He is stupid for saying that in public,” the community member said. The Andorran Jewish community numbers about 70 people, originating mostly from Tangiers and Spain. Chairman of the Israeli Football Association, Itche Menachem, said that the subject would be dealt with.

((has the author of this blog gone insane, some might say at last?))

It was not interesting it was UNBELIEVABLE! We started in the calm of nothing happening in weeks with Alonso’s lead over Schumacher (11 points, that is 5. 5 point-differences between first and second with 6 races to go and those two regularly finishing 1st and 2nd) slowly melting but looking pretty safe. Come friday, Alonso was PENALIZED by a 2 second addition to his qualifying times on saturday for some stupid moves:

“On Friday, stewards ruled Alonso made “unnecessary, unacceptable and dangerous” actions in an encounter with Red Bull test driver Robert Doornbos. Alonso had a hard time passing Doornbos, made a hand gesture to him, veered off the racing line toward him then slowed around a curve, making Doornbos take action to avoid a crash. ”
“When Button’s car caught fire, the (training) session stopped.

‘Frustrated’ Miller relishing new opportunity
Irish Times – Sep 7, 2006
“I am very happy to be here and training and just to fight for my place in the team. “Miller joined United from Celtic on a free transfer during the summer of 2004, but managed just 11 starts, only three of them in the Premiership. Signed as a potential successor to Keane, he tasted Champions League football at Old Trafford, but could not force his way into Alex Ferguson’s plans often enough for his liking. Miller was away with the Republic of Ireland squad preparing for Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Germany when Keane’s call came. However, he admitted his mind was made up virtually on the spot. Miller said: “When I got the phone call, my decision was pretty much made there and then, to be totally honest. “I was training with the international team, and they were very good to let me come over and speak to Sunderland, and it was done and dusted within a couple of hours… “Miller joined United from Celtic on a free transfer during the summer of 2004, but managed just 11 starts, only three of them in the Premiership. Staunton is handed one-match ban
BBC News – Sep 8, 2006
The Republic boss was dismissed during Saturday’s opening Euro 2008 qualifying defeat by Germany. Staunton was banished to the stands of the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium by referee Luis Medina Cantalejo for constantly protesting about his decisions. Staunton insisted after his dismissal that sitting in the stands would hold no fears for him. Allardyce eyes up Tristan move
rte.ie – Sep 7, 2006
The former Deportivo La Coruna player is available on a free transfer after having his contract with the La Liga club cancelled. And, although Allardyce admits The Trotters face competition in trying to attract the 30-year-old, he is hopeful of eventually being able to tie up a deal which would help strengthen a squad he was not able to bolster as much as he would have liked before the transfer window closed last month. ‘We have an interest in Diego Tristan,’ said Allardyce. He added: ‘He is a player with a very good track record who is available because of his situation at Deportivo. ‘The difficulty for us is that a number of clubs may also be interested, who he could perceive to be bigger than we are or are offering more money, so we will see how we go on. ‘

Although ?8million new signing Nicolas Anelka is ready to make his Bolton debut against newly-promoted Watford at home on Saturday, Allardyce could certainly do with some attacking reinforcements at present. Kevin Davies is already sidelined with a fractured cheekbone, while Stelios Giannakopoulos has now been ruled out for three weeks after picking up a groin injury training with Greece ahead of this week’s Euro 2008 qualifying win over Moldova. ‘Stelios picked up a problem in Greece which will unfortunately keep him out for the best part of three weeks,’ Allardyce revealed. He added: ‘It is a deep-lying injury which needs rest to enable it to settle down and allow Stelios to recover. ‘It is a big disappointment for us because he was our leading goalscorer in the Premiership last season and he will be missed.
