BBC News – Sep 6, 2006
They didn’t pass it well, they didn’t cross it well and they didn’t actually play well, but England have got such a solid foundation that serves them so well. They went away from home and the two centre-backs, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, were nothing short of magnificent, so you have got a chance. Those two played really well in the World Cup and every time you see them play you think this could be one of the great England centre-back partnerships. In these matches, you talk about three things for a central defender – position, position, position. And John Terry has all the attributes you want in a world-class central defender. He makes it all look so easy and gives all of those in front of him such confidence. He is never flustered, he is brilliant at reading the game and has got two great feet.

France get revenge | FOOTBALL | SPORT | tvnz.co.nz
TVNZ – Sep 7, 2006
It was sweet revenge for Les Bleus who bowed to the Italians onpenalties in a controversial World Cup final two monthsago. France are second in the Group B table, level with Scotland andfive points ahead of the world champions who have made a miserablestart to their campaign, having been held 1-1 by Lithuaniaon Sunday. Govou needed just 90 seconds to make a dramatic impact, volleyingin a cross by defender William Gallas. It was the first time Govou, often used as a substitute, hadstarted a match for France since the 4-0 thrashing of Cyprus in aWorld Cup qualifier in October 2005. France increased their lead after 17 minutes when fans’ favouriteThierry Henry produced a superb finish from close range after Italygoalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon failed to hold a powerful shot fromFlorent Malouda.

If you give them space and time, they can punish you. “They played some good football, the goals they scored were verygood, they’re a decent side. It proves that Asian football isgetting better, and it’s going to be difficult for us to qualify(for the World Cup). Now we know what we need to do toprepare. Caretaker coach Graham Arnold agrees. “Kuwait, they’ve beenplaying these type of games for years,” he said. “They went for athree-week camp before they played us in Sydney, and since thenthey’ve been in Turkey to get ready for this one.

Rooney gets all-clear to play in World Cup
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 6, 2006
The broad grin of David Davies, the FA executive director, as he accompanied Rooney also suggested that the 20-year-old would play a part in England’s quest to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966. Only six weeks ago the striker was all but ruled out of the finals after he broke a metatarsal in a match against Chelsea. It is not known when Rooney will actually play in a game, but most pundits believe that it will not be until the end of the group stage in two weeks.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | I select the team, says Robinson
BBC News – Sep 6, 2006
Andrew was appointed as the RFU’s first elite director last month, leading to speculation that Robinson’s role has been diluted. “Rob and I need to sit down face to face but, ultimately, I’m in charge of selection,” Robinson told the Guardian. “I’m selecting the team and that’s something that has to be recognised. ”

Andrew’s appointment came in the wake of an RFU review of England’s coaching set-up following a dismal run of form since the World Cup victory in 2003.

Tills are ringing already for the beers, the barbie gear and the…

However, that drop in spending is expected to be more than cancelled out by increased purchases over the month. Sportswear retailers are also hoping to cash in. In the last World Cup in 2002, sales of replica football shirts grew by 24pc in the weeks leading up to the tournament, according to TNS Worldpanel, the market research group. This would be a welcome boost – the male sportswear market has seen sales tumble by 11pc in the past year as replica shirts have become less fashionable. Sales of other sporting goods such as garden-sized goalposts, sweatbands and footballs are also said to have doubled. The BRC says that more unusual World Cup themed items, including “Footballer’s Wife” outfits, toilet seats, cheerleader outfits, inflatable referee costumes and T-shirts for dogs have been selling well. Advertising spending is estimated to rise by £300m during the competition as companies seek to cash in on branded promotions.

What we need is a Muslim Rooney
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 7, 2006
On reflection I realise this is a lie. I am insanely jealous. Why can’t it be England? And why does football mean so much to so many? During the England match, head in my hands and hardly able to breathe, I was chided by my two-year old niece: “Don’t get upset, it’s only a game. ” Such wisdom and ignorance from one so young… When England exited the 2002 World Cup she didn’t exist, yet she’s already grasped the futility of being an England fan. But what she hasn’t grasped is the significance of the beautiful game. There’s a fifth column in this country… I am insanely jealous. Why can’t it be England? Not those who whooped with joy when England fans had the smiles blasted off our faces by the Portuguese penalties and Wayne’s infantile hooliganism.

Digicel honours retiring FIFA referee Prendergast
Jamaica Observer – Sep 7, 2006
Prendergast holds the distinction of being the first referee from the Caribbean selected to officiate in two World Cup Finals. In the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea, he became the second representative from the Caribbean to officiate at the senior World Cup after Trinidad & Tobago’s Ramesh Ramdan’s selection for the France 1998 competition. He had decided to end his international career at the Germany 2006 World Cup Finals for which he was picked, but was forced to leave the Finals before competition started after suffering a knee injury. If the England team is successful or nearly successful, well and good. Let us fervently hope it is. But if it disappoints those who worked themselves into a fever about this series, the consequences will be dire. Football fans will ask why the heck players, who are paid millions of pounds to perform, cannot win prizes; why a game they care deeply about and is apparently awash with money, cannot deliver.

Under-fire Aragones keen to stay
CNN International – Sep 7, 2006
But the coach insisted that he would not step down voluntarily. "Complete disaster" said El Pais, while influential sports daily Marca, who had pressed for Aragones’s appointment before he took charge two years ago, declared that the 68-year-old should now quit. "After the fiasco at the World Cup, his unmerited contract extension and the prospects of his present project, the best thing he can do is to resign," said Marca in its match report. Several papers compared the loss to the 3-2 defeat against Cyprus in a Euro 2000 qualifier in 1998, that prompted Javier Clemente to resign as Spain coach. Before the World Cup Aragones said he would resign if his side did not reach the quarterfinals, but he went back on his decision after they were eliminated by France in the first knockout round. He has kept faith with the same players and same 4-3-3 system that he used at the World Cup and rejected calls to introduce new blood into the team. On Wednesday, he watched in silence from the sidelines as his side twice surrendered the lead to a Northern Ireland side who had lost 3-0 to Iceland in their previous qualifier on Saturday. Out-fought and out-thought by Lawrie Sanchez’s modest team, Spain appeared unable to cope with their direct, route one-style football and succumbed to a hat-trick from Leeds United striker David Healy. Aragones accepted he was to blame for the defeat, but said he was not contemplating resigning. Severe blow"The main responsibility lies with the coach, I didn’t adopt the right tactics," he said after the match. "Spain are a better side than our opponents, but they have dealt us a severe blow that has made qualification for Euro 2008 more difficult. "But I’m not thinking about giving up the post.

Zwanziger elected president of German soccer federation
International Herald Tribune – Sep 8, 2006
“I don’t want to overvalue football, but it provides an important contribution to society,” Zwanziger said Friday. “I will do everything in my power to serve football. ” Zwanziger has served as treasurer of the 106-year-old soccer federation and as vice president of the 2006 World Cup organizing committee. The DFB’s rank-and-file rebelled against Mayer-Vorfelder, believing the former VfB Stuttgart president favored the sport’s professional side over the amateur teams. Zwanziger said he wants to improve relations between amateur clubs and Bundesliga clubs — which have sought more independence from the DFB — and promote girls’ soccer and the integration of foreign players. The DFB has more than six million members.

BBC SPORT | Fun and Games | Give Lampard a break
BBC News – Sep 8, 2006
And what about Lampard – are you still of a mind to drop him?

Yes, he’s been anonymous in the last two games, after a poor World Cup. Stick him on the bench for a bit – it’ll do him good to get the old grapes up the backside sitting on cold benches in cold countries. And if they started with Lennon, Imagine what he could do!

All I’ll say is Give Him A Chance. There’s a few people who’ve written in about you calling Andorra “a bunch of total losers”. They’re saying that’s unfair, they’re only doing their best and everyone deserves a chance.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Andrew gives Robinson ultimatum
BBC News – Sep 7, 2006
England have won just two matches in each of the last two Six Nations tournaments under Robinson, and Andrew wants to see an improvement in results and performance come the spring. “We have to have a head of steam by the end of the Six Nations to have any chance at the World Cup,” he added. “The model in 2003 was right and it was a fantastic achievement but the world game has moved on quite considerably since then and it is clear from the results that England haven’t.
