Aragones denied his change of heart had been influenced by the fact that he would not receive any financial compensation if he resigned. “It wasn’t down to the money, it was more to do with the people around me. ”

Aragones, a former player and then coach of Atletico Madrid, was appointed as national coach in 2004, succeeding Inaki Saez. After the 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland, Spanish newspaper Marca polled 100,000 fans on its website, with nearly 80% calling for Aragones to resign.

United ready for all-British clash
TVNZ – Sep 12, 2006
United had a disastrous European campaign last season in whichthey won just one of six group games and failed to score infour. Celtic did not even make the group stage, humbled in the secondqualifying round by Artmedia Bratislava. “In four games against Lille and Villarreal, we never scored, but it will be different this year I can assure you,” Unitedmanager Alex Ferguson said. United faced Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers in the competitionin 2003, winning both ties in the group stage. “What you’ve got to do with games like this is get rid of theScotland-England rivalry because that only makes it harder. It’seasy to get caught up in the emotion if you’re not careful becausegames like this don’t come around very often,” Ferguson said… Celtic will be forced into a counter-attacking role and Strachanmay rue the loss of Bulgaria’s Stilian Petrov, now with Aston Villain England. Former Everton central midfielder Thomas Gravesen’s arrival fromReal Madrid as a numerical replacement should, however, add steelto the defence. Up front, the nippy Kenny Miller, who scored Scotland’s winnerin their 2-1 win in Lithuania in Euro 2008 qualifying last week, may be the better bet for breaching the United defence rather thanJan Vennegoor of Hesselink despite the Dutchman’s two goals in twogames for Celtic. Probable teams: Manchester United: 1-Edwin van der Sar; 2-Gary Neville, 6-WesBrown, 5-Rio Ferdinand, 27-Mikael Silvestre; 22-John O’Shea,16-Michael Carrick, 11-Ryan Giggs, 7-Cristiano Ronaldo; 8-WayneRooney, 9-Louis Saha Celtic: 1-Artur Boruc; 12-Mark Wilson, 5-Gary Caldwell,44-Stephen McManus, 3-Lee Naylor; 25-Shunsuke Nakamura, 18-NeilLennon, 16-Thomas Gravesen, 46-Aiden McGeady; 9-Kenny Miller,10-Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

FA charge Wenger and Pardew
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 11, 2006
“We believe Alan Pardew did no more than celebrate in a passionate manner following a crucial goal in a London derby. “Alan Pardew has the full backing of the board with regards to this charge, which will be defended vigorously. “Meanwhile, the FA will contest a Uefa charge of improper conduct by England fans before last month’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia in Zagreb. Uefa’s control and disciplinary body will deal with the charge at a hearing in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday. An FA spokesman said: “The FA have submitted an extensive response to the charge including statements from our officials, observers and supporters and believe we have a very strong case. “The charges relate to incidents inside and outside the Maksimir Stadium where Croatia beat England 2-0 in their Group E qualifier on Oct 11. Major League Soccer (MLS) officials are working out what the financial implications would be if former England captain David Beckham decided on a move to America… “Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at 4. 15am on suspicion of actual bodily harm and is currently in custody at a south west London police station. “It is not thought that the victim of the alleged assault required hospital treatment. Gascoigne has been out of football since he left his role as coach at non-league side Kettering last December. The 39-year-old only took charge of the Nationwide Conference North club at the end of October but was released of his duties 39 days later. Staunton will learn from touchline ban
Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:55

Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton admits he regrets landing a one-game touchline ban but does not expect his absence to hamper chances of victory in Cyprus on October 7. The 37-year-old was dismissed from the dug-out in the Euro 2008 qualifying loss to Germany on September 2. He kicked a bottle of water in anger with 15 minutes of the game remaining and was admonished by referee Luis Medina Cantalejo and as a result will now be forced to watch from the stands when the Republic head to Nicosia next month. ‘Of course I regret it,’ Staunton told PA Sport at the FIFA World Cup Symposium in Berlin. ‘It was a silly thing to do. It was just my frustration on the night… I got the one-match ban and I just have to get on with it. ‘
Staunton remains confident his troops can cope with his absence. ‘It is not a nice thing to happen but I don’t think it is going to affect us in any way,’ he added. ‘I’ll be there to train them for the three or four days that we’ve got them and in the end there is not a lot I can do anyway once they cross that white line. So I am expecting another strong, positive performance. ‘
The former Republic defender had come under fire following a 4-0 home trashing at the hands of Holland in mid-August. His players responded with a strong performance against Germany, losing just 1-0, yet Staunton feels the pressure has not eased.
