Parker back in the England fold
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 30, 2006
Norwich goalkeeper Paul Gallacher is also drafted into the squad. Celtic striker Kenny Miller is suspended for the visit of France on Oct 7 but will be available for the game in Kiev four days later. Steven Reid is out of the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus and the Czech Republic. The Blackburn midfielder has not played since injuring his back injury in the opening qualifying defeat to Germany in Stuttgart at the start of the month. Reid did travel to Austria for the first leg of Blackburn’s Uefa Cup first-round tie against Red Bull Salzburg a fortnight ago. However, it was evident during the training session at the Bulls Arena the evening prior to the game the injury would not allow him to play, and so it proved. Reid has since seen a chiropractor to discover the extent of the problem, with the hope of returning after the international break.

French form causes concern for Smith and his soaraway Scots
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 30, 2006
Under Smith the Scots have soared – at least in comparison to the dark days of Berti Vogts, when they kept company in the Fifa rankings with the likes of Angola and Kazakhstan – and in the most recent table they were in a much more respectable 34th position. The upward bound was the result of a perfect start to Scotland’s qualifying campaign with the 6-0 home drubbing of the Faroe Islands followed by a hard-fought but merited 2-1 victory over awkward Lithuania in Kaunas. Scotland’s qualifying section, inevitably dubbed the ‘Group of Death’ once France, Italy and the Ukraine had come out of the hat ahead of them, suddenly looked less daunting. The Italians’ stumbling draw with Lithuania in Naples and emphatic defeat by France in Paris has meant that Scotland go into their double-header against the French and Ukrainians five points ahead of the world champions, hence the Tartan Army’s ravenous appetite for tickets — and Saturday’s game was sold out in hours… Their forwards are very adaptable. “Smith, meanwhile, will have to do without the suspended Kenny Miller, the Scottish attacker who has been most consistent in the past year or more. Under the circumstances, it would not surprise if he fields a 4-5-1 formation, for all the pressure to attack at home. “While we have to concern ourselves with making sure we are set up well against them, if we are over concerned with that we could cause ourselves a problem. They are the type of team who — if we don’t show we are going to try to cause them as many problems as we can — will have players who are happy to play in our half of the pitch. It would be dangerous for us to sit back too far. “Scotland v France, SaturdayKick-off: 5pm TV: Sky Sports 1.

The 29-year-old, who became the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer with a brace in Real’s 5-1 win over Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday, will also miss the friendly against Argentina four days later. Aragones told AS: ‘There are other players that have come in and you do not ask me anything about them. ‘I understand that is how the media works, but I have not spoken with Raul. ‘I am not used to speaking with the players that I have not included… The 29-year-old, who became the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer with a brace in Real’s 5-1 win over Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday, will also miss the friendly against Argentina four days later. Reid blow for Ireland Euro hopes
Ireland Online – Sep 29, 2006

Report: Makelele says he won’t play at 2008 European Championships
International Herald Tribune – Sep 30, 2006
“My objective is to do the maximum so that France qualifies,” Makelele said. “But I won’t go further. I won’t go to Euro 2008. It will be time to pass on the baton. I don’t see myself going at my age. ” Makelele, who has 52 caps, would be 35 at the tournament. Makelele had originally planned to retire from international soccer after the World Cup, but France coach Raymond Domenech insisted he play… 7 and then hosts the Faeroe Islands four days after. “I think if we get a good result against Scotland, it will be good if he (Domenech) tries out a younger player like (Jeremy) Toulalan against the Faeroe Islands on Wednesday,” Makelele said. Makelele added that Mourinho was “only trying to protect” him when he said he no longer wanted to play for Les Bleus, and does not expect Domenech to contest his decision this time. “There won’t be a debate,” Makelele said. “I’ll think he’ll be good enough to leave me alone.

Rooney in extra training in bid to recapture form
Ireland Online – Sep 29, 2006
The motivation and confidence will build up and I am sure he will be better against Newcastle. ?Queiroz believes Rooney?s lack of games since he suffered a broken metatarsal at Chelsea in April offers ?an explanation, but not an excuse? for the striker?s current inconsistencies. For once, the United camp are happy to release the former Everton star to England on the basis next week?s Euro 2008 double-header with Macedonia and Croatia will bring even more improvement… ?They think they need to prove something in the first second and with their first touch. The first time they control the ball they feel the need to conquer the world. ?It takes time to learn they do not need to do that, that the team is more important. ?It is a natural part of the learning process which we can see here and in other teams, we can see it all over the world. ?While Rooney?s foot is now fully healed, Mikael Silvestre faces six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a similar injury against Arsenal earlier this month. At least in Gabriel Heinze and Patrice Evra, Ferguson has two ready-made replacements at left-back. Heinze is more likely to feature against Newcastle as United return to league action looking to arrest a slide that has brought them just a single point from their last two games.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | McFadden fit for Scotland…
BBC News – Sep 29, 2006
But he has only named three other strikers, despite McFadden’s injury problems. And the versatile McCulloch is also included despite not playing for Wigan since 26 August due to a knee injury. Smith said: “Losing Kenny was a blow because he has been terrific for us. “Lee McCulloch and James McFadden have not played since the previous international games, but both hope to be involved with their clubs over the weekend. “Once they come along, we will see how they got over the weekend games – if they are involved – and try to determine their overall match fitness. ”

Smith has mainly stuck by the squad that has gained maximum points from their opening two matches in Group B.

Cardiff march on after unlucky Breen sees red
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 30, 2006
A fortnight ago, Luton’s Lewis Emanuel was sent off after eight minutes as a header was deflected on to his arm at point-blank range. Yesterday it was Breen, dismissed after 23 minutes in equally contentious circumstances. That he did catch Steve Thompson in the face with his arm was not in doubt, but far from there being any malicious intent, it appeared that the Cardiff forward walked into Breen’s demonstration to the linesman of what had just been done to him as the two jumped for an aerial ball. Certainly there was little force behind the blow and Thompson made a half-hearted effort to plead the Irishman’s cause. It utterly changed the dynamic of the game… Charlie Mulgrew, drafted into the middle as cover for Breen, made good contact on a clearing header from Parry’s cross, but the ball rebounded off the chest of Jody Craddock and looped with almost mocking slowness beyond Murray’s desperate dive. The only disappointment for Cardiff was the strain that caused Kevin McNaughton to hobble off just after the half-hour. The left-back’s form this season has earned him a Scotland call-up but it now seems unlikely that he will be able to add to his tally of three caps in the Euro 2008 qualifier against France next Saturday. On a day when pretty much everything went for Cardiff, though, there was a silver lining even there, as McNaughton was replaced by Kamara. His pace was a persistent threat, and he added the third on 70 minutes with an impressive finish after accelerating on to Kerrea Gilbert’s through-ball. Parry thrashed Chopra’s square pass into the top corner nine minutes later to complete the transformation from attrition to rout.
