Misfiring Rooney always a hit for McClaren
Independent Online – Oct 2, 2006
The 20-year-old Manchester United star has not found the net in a competitive England game since two goals against Croatia in the Euro 2004 finals while his international drought stretches back a year to a friendly against Argentina. But Rooney will still feature when England face Macedonia in their Euro 2008 qualifier next weekend. “His momentum has been lost because of disruptions,” said McClaren. ‘He’s always been one of the best players’”He hasn’t got into a rhythm because of injury and the bans he’s received but he’s a world-class player and he’ll get that form back with games. “He’s always been one of the best players… The 20-year-old Manchester United star has not found the net in a competitive England game since two goals against Croatia in the Euro 2004 finals while his international drought stretches back a year to a friendly against Argentina. The picture changes somewhat, though, if Robson comes on board.   He has the calibre, the pedigree and knows international football.   Age is a factor but not so much as he’s not getting the job on his own. If it was up to me I’d wait until after the World Cup.   Plenty of top quality managers could become available then.   Although the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign is around the corner, I think it would pay to wait.   We’ve only a couple of meaningless friendlies in the meantime… If it was up to me I’d wait until after the World Cup.   Plenty of top quality managers could become available then.   Although the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign is around the corner, I think it would pay to wait.   We’ve only a couple of meaningless friendlies in the meantime. There’s no point rushing an appointment. The FAI are not pushing the boat out on this one – take Australia for instance.   They’re not as high profile a footballing nation as we are but yet they still can get a manager of Gus Hiddink’s quality.

BBC News – Oct 1, 2006
McClaren said: “He just wants to concentrate on playing for United and his family, which were the reasons for his decision and I respect that. ”

At 31, Scholes is the same age as David Beckham, who has not played for England since McClaren took over as manager. Despite injuries to midfielders Owen Hargreaves and Aaron Lennon, Beckham failed to win a recall to McClaren’s latest squad. England face Macedonia in a Euro 2008 qualifier at Old Trafford on 7 October and travel to Zagreb to play Croatia four days later. McClaren added: “I’ve said why I made the decision and I stand by that. I’m looking to the future and players coming through – but the door is never closed… ”

Striker Wayne Rooney is back in the England fold following suspension and McClaren said he is not worried by the 20-year-old’s stuttering form. “He is a world-class player and he is a player who at any moment can change a game,” said McClaren.

Dutch pair reject van Basten recall
Monday, 2 October 2006 10:19

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel have rejected call-ups from Netherlands coach Marco van Basten ahead of the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers. Van Bommel was initially selected in the squad, named on Friday, for the matches against Bulgaria and Albania. That decision surprised many after the coach had made it clear following Holland’s World Cup exit the Bayern Munich midfielder had no further part to play in the national side. Those comments seem to have stuck with van Bommel as he turned down van Basten. ‘Van Bommel does not want to play for Holland any more under the current coaching staff,’ a statement from the KNVB said… That decision surprised many after the coach had made it clear following Holland’s World Cup exit the Bayern Munich midfielder had no further part to play in the national side. Those comments seem to have stuck with van Bommel as he turned down van Basten. ‘Van Bommel does not want to play for Holland any more under the current coaching staff,’ a statement from the KNVB said. It has also emerged van Basten made a phone call to Van Nistelrooy over the weekend in a bid to bring him into the squad as a replacement for the injured Klaas Jan Huntelaar. This was another surprising move considering the Real Madrid striker’s recent criticism of the coaching staff but it was not unexpected that talks between the two men did not progress any further. ‘After the telephone contact it became clear that both the technical staff of Oranje and Van Nistelrooy lack the confidence that the striker can be added to the group as a replacement for Huntelaar,’ the KNVB statement continued.

BBC News – Oct 1, 2006
Having lost 3-0 at home to Iceland in their opening qualifier, Sanchez’s team stunned Spain with a 3-2 win at Windsor Park just four days later. “We can beat anybody, but the converse of that is we can get beaten too. We must be more consistent,” said Sanchez. “But the fans are enjoying it and 3,000 are travelling to Copenhagen.

Toshack happy with match schedule
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 2, 2006
Toshack wanted to play one of the favourites in the opening game to get out of the way a match Wales feel they will probably lose while his youngsters are finding their feet. It means Wales will go to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 2 for their opening fixture, and will not have to play on the September 6 date… Wales cannot use the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff during the September dates because of a Rolling Stones concert. The next two games will be a home double-header on October 7 and 11 against Slovakia and Cyprus respectively. Wales then do not play again until March 2007, when they will help the Republic of Ireland open their stay at Croke Park on March 24. They then return to Cardiff to face San Marino on March 28 before only having to play the one game in June 2007, at home to the Czechs on June 2 with the June 6 date free. But from then on at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, life gets tough. They are home to Germany on September 8 and away to Slovakia on September 12, followed by an away double-header in Cyprus on October 13 and then San Marino on the 17th. That leaves Wales with two final games at home to the Irish on November 17 and away to Germany on November 21.

RTÉ.ie Sport – Shoulder problem could end Moore’s season
rte.ie – Oct 2, 2006
O’Neill said: ‘I believe Luke’s injury could be a season-threatening injury. It looks like – and I don’t want to pre-empt things – that he will need an operation. ‘It’s the first time he has not been able to put the shoulder back in again straight away after it’s come out. ‘If Luke needs an operation, it will be a major blow to us because it will take months and months. It’s a real blow to us and a real blow to him but he needs the shoulder tightening up and he needs it strengthened. ‘
Moore recently admitted: ‘The shoulder is painful when it comes out but once it’s back in it’s not too painful. I’ve been trying to put the operation off as long as I can.
