France faces tough task against Scotland in Euro 2008 qualifier
International Herald Tribune – Oct 3, 2006
The World Cup runner-up plays at Scotland on Saturday in a 2008 European Championship qualifier, and coach Raymond Domenech isn’t taking his team’s Group B opponent lightly. “We must be careful not to be drawn into stereotypes about British soccer,” Domenech said Tuesday at France’s training camp. “Scotland has a lot more about their game than just lobbing long balls forward into the air. They can play football. “We know there is a real physical combat. The passionate public, the Scottish weather… France downed World Cup champion Italy at home last time out, but Domenech expects this to be a tougher match. “This is the first real test we have,” Domenech said. “We need to get points quickly so as not to have a knife under our throats later on. ” France could play without forward Louis Saha and winger Sidney Govou. Saha, who practiced alone, has a hamstring injury while Govou sat out training with a bad ankle. But the return to form of David Trezeguet is a boost. The Juventus striker has five goals in three games in Italy’s Serie B.

Euro 2008 mascots facing legal challenge
The Age – Oct 3, 2006
“Philippe Margraff, head of marketing operations at European soccer’s governing body UEFA, told Reuters he had heard about the supposed similarities but was confident the Euro 2008 mascots were original creations. “The legal advice we have received suggests that there is no direct relevance. I have not personally seen the other characters but our lawyers tell us that they are dissimilar. An internet search carried out by Reuters suggested that the Euro 2008 tournament organisers could have further difficulties with the shortlist of names for their characters. Zigi and Zagi have previously been used as the names for two mischievous brothers in the Superman comic series, while Trix and Flix comes up as the name of Cologne-based dance act. Flitz and Bitz appear to be without any serious rivalry however… “The legal advice we have received suggests that there is no direct relevance. Is Beckham finished at Real Madrid?
BBC News – Oct 3, 2006
On Friday he was left out of England’s squad for this month’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Macedonia and Croatia, despite the absence through injury of both Aaron Lennon and Owen Hargreaves. Two days later, he was named on Real Madrid’s bench for the fourth successive match. This snub was particularly humiliating because a striker, Raul, was picked in Beckham’s berth on the right side of midfield by manager Fabio Capello. The former England captain’s contract with Madrid expires at the end of the season and little progress seems to have been made in renewing it. Stories linking Beckham with a move to Major League Soccer in the United States gain more credence as the weeks go by without the 31-year-old putting pen to paper at Real… Stories linking Beckham with a move to Major League Soccer in the United States gain more credence as the weeks go by without the 31-year-old putting pen to paper at Real. Yet former Liverpool player Michael Robinson – who presents, writes and directs the biggest football show on Spanish television – insists Beckham still has a future at the Bernebeu. “The situation is not the same as in England, where Beckham seems to be a forgotten man,” the presenter of El D?a Despu?s (The Day After) told BBC Sport.

“After the World Cup I rued the fact that I had not scored any goals,” Lampard told BBC Radio Five Live. “You have to shut your ears off and not take to heart what is being said because we all doubt ourselves in certain moments. “I had a few weeks off and now I just want to work hard. The only way you can put things right is on the pitch… I know when I have not played well enough. ”

But the Chelsea midfielder said that he was enjoying the pressure of playing for new England coach Steve McClaren. England have won all three games under McClaren and play Euro 2008 qualifiers against Macedonia at Old Trafford on Saturday and Croatia in Zagreb the following Wednesday. “That is one of the really good and refreshing things with Steve McClaren and his staff,” said the 28-year-old Lampard. “From the moment you join up with the team on Tuesday afternoon there is pressure. “You know that you must train well, that you must be around the hotel with your mind on the game and that when the game comes you must perform at your top level. ”

McClaren left former skipper David Beckham out of his first squad as coach and it would seem that the Real Madrid midfielder has played his last game for England.

Crouch and Rooney: an uneasy pairing | The Guardian | Guardian…
Guardian Unlimited – Oct 3, 2006
Rooney’s state of mind is of concern to McClaren going into the Euro 2008 qualifying matches against Macedonia and Croatia but any temptation to leave him out all but ended yesterday when Andrew Johnson withdrew through injury. Johnson damaged a hamstring in the final minute of Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City. The Premiership’s leading scorer, with six goals since his £8. 5m move from Crystal Palace, had been pressing hard for his first competitive England start and it is a measure of his increased status that his absence will be keenly felt by McClaren at a time when his options in attack look increasingly sparse… “With Michael Owen and Dean Ashton on the list of long-term absentees, the attack has become a concern for McClaren. Whether he would have been bold enough to use Johnson from the start against Macedonia at Old Trafford on Saturday is a question whose answer may never be made public. One certainty, however, is that McClaren has misgivings not only about Rooney’s recent performances but also about whether the Manchester United striker is cut out to play alongside Peter Crouch. Both like to drop deep to collect the ball and are usually at their best, particularly Crouch, when playing slightly behind a sharp, incisive partner. That is where Johnson could have come in, his burst of scoring elevating him ahead of Jermain Defoe in McClaren’s thinking, particularly after the Tottenham striker’s ineffective performance in last month’s 1-0 win in Macedonia. Defoe scored a penalty in the 2-1 win against Portsmouth on Sunday but there is a conundrum in expecting him to flourish at international level when he is not even a Spurs regular. Rightly or wrongly, his two goals against Andorra are undermined because of the identity of England’s opponents and McClaren may feel he has little option but to trust in Rooney and Crouch and ask them to work closely in training, starting in Manchester today.

Italy coach plays down Cassano omission
Independent Online – Oct 3, 2006
The world champions host Ukraine on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium where Cassano played for Serie A side Roma before leaving to join Spanish giants Real Madrid in January. Cassano left Roma under a cloud after falling out with the coaching staff and the club’s volatile fans over his perceived poor attitude. The 24-year-old could have expected a far from welcoming reception on Saturday given that the stadium will be made up mostly of Roma fans.

The duo rejected call-ups to the national team ahead of the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Albania after public spats with Van Basten. However, Kesler has said any problems between the coach and his players must be sorted out within the squad and not by the intervention of the KNVB. ‘If we start getting involved in team matters then there will be no end,’ Kesler told De Telegraaf. ‘There have been enough talks between all of the parties involved and everyone has made their own decision. ‘We must not act as if the future of Dutch football depends on those two gentlemen… ‘If we start getting involved in team matters then there will be no end,’ Kesler told De Telegraaf. ‘There have been enough talks between all of the parties involved and everyone has made their own decision. ‘We must not act as if the future of Dutch football depends on those two gentlemen. ‘The past three internationals have all been won without them, so things haven’t really changed. ‘I can imagine that Van Nistelrooy and Van Bommel feel disappointed, maybe unappreciated or unrecognised, but that’s part of sport at the top level.

Bellamy surprise choice as captain
CNN – Oct 3, 2006
I would hope and expect him to play in both matches, knowing him as I do. But it is something we will have to think about. I am not sure how we will handle the training situation with Craig. He will be in court while we are working, I will look into how we manage that. " Tools: Save |

It has now been two years since I scored a goal at club level, and that is very disappointing. ‘I have to get more goals, plain and simple. ‘
What Ireland manager Steve Staunton would give for Kilbane to find the net in the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus in Nicosia on Saturday and the Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road next Wednesday. Staunton’s Ireland opened their campaign early last month with a 1-0 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, a game of limited chances for the boys in green and a lucky deflected winner from Lukas Podolski. Since then Germany have hammered San Marino 13-0, while the Czechs have also taken maximum points from their games after a 2-1 win over Wales and 3-0 victory in Slovakia. It means Ireland are already playing catch-up, with the pressure on to take six points over the next few days. ‘We have to be aiming for the six,’ said Kilbane, who joined Wigan from Everton for ?2million on transfer deadline day… It means Ireland are already playing catch-up, with the pressure on to take six points over the next few days. ‘We have to be aiming for the six,’ said Kilbane, who joined Wigan from Everton for ?2million on transfer deadline day. But recalling last October’s narrow 1-0 World Cup qualifying win in Cyprus, Kilbane added: ‘We had a lot of problems then, and if it had not been for Shay (Given) we wouldn’t have won the game. ‘But we’re more than capable of winning this time. We have to make sure we’re prepared right, that everybody’s head is right, knowing that it is going to be tough, but we can get the right result. ‘As for the Czechs, we know we can beat them at home, so the six points are something we are capable of getting, and we have to hit back. ‘With Germany and the Czechs taking six points from their opening two games, we have to try and strike a blow.

Lawrence Dallaglio’s men will be confident of retaining the Cup this time around, but with only one team going through to the semi-finals from each of the four pools, no team can afford to slip up and especially not in their home matches. Securing the win today won’t be easy against an Irish side that won many admirers last season with their attacking style and who in the evergreen Mike Catt, have a player capable of changing the course of any game.
